I. STORY ELEMENTS OF A MYTH: Myths are traditional stories about the lives of the gods and legendary heroes. Besides gods and heroes, the myths also contained monsters, magic, and amazing adventures. The myths of ancient Greece are among the most famous in the world. Ancient Greeks lacked today’s scientific knowledge, so myths were often created to explain the mysteries of nature such as birth, death, disease, storms (natural phenomena), and legendary battles. Gods and Goddesses shared similar characteristics (special quality or trait that makes a person, thing, or group different from others). Gods and Goddesses behaved very much like humans. But unlike humans, they were immortal and had special powers. You will need to read over the info below and at least three myths provided by your

teacher. These include the 12 mini-booklets located in your classroom. These must be read in class when time is given.

*FINAL DRAFT RUBRIC CHECKLIST: As you know, myths were often used to explain natural

phenomena. Your challenge is to create your own myth (origins story) to explain some natural phenomena

or land formation being created. It can be anything from the origin of hurricanes to how a mountain range

was created. You will first need to complete the story flowchart to help brainstorm your ideas. Refer back to

page 253 of your textbook, use the provided library books, mini-booklet stories, your activity folder, and/or

internet links for examples.

You MUST include the following (check off each item AFTER you complete your final draft):

Your story should include a title that identifies and gives an idea of what your story is about.

Your story must involve your god/goddess or hero created (#7)

Your story must include at least one other Olympian god/goddess that you researched (#4 – 6)

Your story must have a clear well-written introduction paragraph (introduces reader to characters, setting, and sets the stage for the

conflict without given it away). 4+ sentences

Your story must include a clear well-written paragraph(s); these are your body paragraphs that focus on the conflict and the events

surrounding it. NO plot holes! 5+ sentences

Your story must explain the creation of some natural phenomenon (sunrise, rainbow, aurora, fog, thunder, tornado,

erosion, hurricane, tsunami, frost flower, volcanic eruption, earthquake, etc.) OR some geological landform feature

(mountain range, a large valley, a sea, an ocean, archipelago, lake, peninsula, coral reef, waterfall, etc.). Think about all

of the incredible places we visited this year. You may choose any of those landforms or others from around the world.

Remember that you will be explaining the origins of the phenomenon or landform. Be sure to stretch your sentences with

DETAILS, DETAILS, DETAILS…

Your story must include a clear well-written conclusion/resolution that wraps up your myth. It should lead back to your phenomena

or landform that you explained. Leave the reader with an interesting final impression. 4+ sentences

Your story should clearly show that you know something about Greek mythology by incorporating details about your powers, symbols,

personalities, and other information you learned during your research (sections I – IV of this packet).

You will be creating your own unique ® set on paper provided by the teacher. Refer to the last page of this packet for specific details and expectations.
