What is “The Troubles”?

The Troubles was a period of ethno-political conflict in Northern Ireland. The duration of the Troubles is conventionally dated from the late 1960s and considered by many to have ended with the Belfast “Good Friday” Agreement in 1998.

Who was fighting and why were they fighting?

The principal issues at stake in the Troubles were the constitutional status of Northern Ireland and the relationship between the mainly-Protestant unionist and mainly-Catholic nationalist communities in Northern Ireland. The Troubles had both political and military dimensions. Its participants included politicians and political activists on both sides, republican and loyalist paramilitaries, and the security forces of the United Kingdom and of the Republic of Ireland.

Bloody Sunday Bloody Sunday (sometimes called the Bogside Massacre) was an incident

on 30 January 1972 in the Bogside area of Derry, Northern Ireland. Twenty-seven civil rights protesters were shot by the British Army Parachute during a Northern Ireland Civil Rights Association march. Thirteen people, seven of whom were teenagers, died immediately, while the death of another person four months later has been attributed to the injuries he received on the day. Two protesters were injured when they were run down by army vehicles. Many witnesses, including bystanders and journalists, testify that all those shot were unarmed. Five of those wounded were shot in the back. The Provisional Irish Republican Army's (IRA) campaign against the partition of Ireland had begun in the two years prior to Bloody Sunday, but perceptions of the day boosted the status of and recruitment into the organisation enormously. Bloody Sunday remains among the most significant events in the TROUBLES of Northern Ireland, chiefly because it was carried out by the army and not paramilitaries, and in full public and press view

Situation of Northern Ireland nowdays (2010)

- 6 January. The UDA announces the completion of the decommisioning of its weapons in accrodance with the rules set out by the Independent International Commission on Decommissioning.

- 6 February. The Irish National Liberation Army decomissions its weapons in front of independant witnesses

- 9 February. The Independent International Commission on Decommissioning stands down following the termination of the enabling legislation that allowed it to operate.

- 23 February. A car bomb explodes in Newry, Northern Ireland causing extensive damage yet no injuries or deaths. The bombing is believed to be the first time a large car bomb had exploded in Northern Ireland since 2000.
