Message from the President
Pradip Saha
In our life on earth, the most auspicious time of universal connection of souls keeps coming
back when Mother Durga appears every year. New dreams, hope and joyfulness rejuve-
nates our social life.
Suddenly Shiuli (Night flowering Jasmine
flower) wakes up the morning, Sun deliv-
ers nostalgic soft golden light, Sky is full of
white clouds, Waves of air plays over Kans
phool (Kans grass) everywhere in Bengal,
and Bengalis, does not matter wherever
they are, need a magazine to read.
Welcome to BADV and thanks for your
interest for our Souvenir on Durga Puja.
BADV is your home away from home,
where you meet and make friends and
stay friends forever.
We proudly announce that this is our 15th
year of celebration of Sarbojanin Durga
Puja in Delaware. Though Bengalis has
grown in numbers since 2001, but we are
still small wonder in Delaware and have
earned many feathers in our hat regard-
ing religious and cultural event manage-
ment within Indian community.
This year we also received a new set of beautiful Durga Idols from Kolkata, India. Executive
Committee and Volunteers of all ages has been working months overtime to make the
Sharad Utsav in Delaware an unique experience for all of us. So lets come together to ask
for Mothers blessing and Celebrate our Bengaliness, with friends and fantastic food and ad-
da.

religious occasion, recognizing our
great heritage. This is time of the
year when Bengalis all over the
world eagerly wait for Durga Puja.
On this festive and joyous occasion
during these three days we forget
all our differences, embrace each
other, and celebrate the victory of
good over evil. Let us pray to Ma
Durga for peace, happiness, pros-
perity for all.
This year we have purchased New
Idol to make our 15th year of Durga
Puja more memorable one. This
would not have been possible with-
out your generous contribution and
tireless efforts by all the volunteers.

An unique way to celebrate Durga Puja
Tapan Das
There are many ways to celebrate Durga Puja. Everybody has different way to celebrate
Durga Puja. In my humble opinion, there are three ways we may celebrate Durga Puja:
1. Spiritual way
2. Celebrate with family and friends
3. Humanitarian way.
One and two are obvious. We know that. But I am going to discuss how to celebrate our
Durga Puja in most Humanitarian way.
We have been taught through our religious preaching that the best way to serve God is to
serve people who are in need directly or indirectly. God is residing in every one of us. We
are Part of God.
With that in mind, let us promise ourselves to help our family ,friends, and/or any person
who can be helped. I know we are shy of asking people for help. Some people may think
it is a sign of weakness. So we have to be proactive to help people in a respectful way.
We have to open our heart and soul to help others within our means and ability. It is very
easy to say but it is difficult to practice. I think this is the best way to celebrate our Durga
Puja.
How can we do it?
This is very simple and easy to do. It will not cost us anything. We do not have to donate
money to any organization. All we have to do is to dedicate just one(1) hour per week to
this cause -Help Others. Example: you can call your friends and ask him if he needs any
help. It could be just to give him/her a ride to airport. There are millions of way to help oth-
ers. This is based on your choice and desire. There is no rule or formula to exercise. It has to
come from your heart!
Just imagine if you start this week, next year this time, you have accumulated 52 hours of
service in your account. We are six billion people in this planet, that means 312 billion hours
of service provided to our fellow human being! It is incredible!!!
Is it too much to ask for?
The best way to document your service is to maintain a journal of your own. Every week
you write down your service - how you touch somebody's life positively. At the end of the
year when you review your journal you will be amazed! You will feel great!
-
Once a wiseman was asked " How do you quantify your Success?" The wiseman answered
"Very simple, my success is directly proportional to the number of persons' life I have
touched positively or how many people are better off because of me!"
What a statement! This what I believe in. I believe in helping people without any string at-
tached.
Let me end this topic by the following quotes:
"if only goal is to become rich, you will never achieve it."---John D. Rockefeller
"Life is not about amassing money but about a contribution to our society by using our God
gifted talents. As we serve other, we too are served and world becomes a better place .
Today let us do our part with the gifts and talents given to us."---Unknown Author.
May Mother Durga bless you, your family and friends!!!
Stay Fearless, Fun and Full of Love!!!

Journey through Inca Civilization
A Diary by Adrika Gunin
Day1: On the first day we flew from USA to Panama City and changed our flights from
there to reach Lima.
Day2: First thing we did in Lima was go to the Love Garden. The deep blue Pacific
Ocean formed the backdrop for the Love Garden. In the middle of the Love Garden
there is a huge statue. It is an excellent piece of artwork. The statue was made by Victor
Delfin. Next we went to the pyramids of Peru. It is called Huallamarca Site Museum. The
archaeological discoveries and investigations demonstrated that there were three differ-
ent moments of occupation, characterized by functions like public building, cemetery
for the Inca (king), and domestic occupation; dated from 200 B.C. to 1532 A.D. After vis-
iting the pyramids we went to the main square to see the Presidential palace, Catedral
de Lima, and Santo Domingo. At the Presidential Palace there is change of guards every
day around noon. Santo Domingo was built on a cemetery. Only the local people were
buried there because, they wanted to be closer to the gods. In Santo Domingo there is a
portrait of Saint Rose. Saint Roses picture is on the two hundred Soles bill. Soles is the cur-
rency of Peru.

There are ceramic tiles on the wall, they were made in 1606. There is a library in Santo
Domingo. The library was only meant for the privileged people. If any non-privileged
people went inside the library and read a book they were punished. Their punishment
was that they were forbidden. Nobody would talk to them, sell anything to them, or let
them buy anything from others. We saw the first mailbox in Lima, it is shaped like a lion.
We went to the airport to go to Cuzco (ancient name Qosqo), the capital of the Inca
Civilization. Cuzco is situated at 11000 ft above sea level.
Day4: Today we went to the Sacred Valley. Our first stop was in Chinchero. There we saw
some terraces, how the Quechuas (the local people) used to preserve their potatoes.
They can keep their potatoes for a very long time because they dry their potatoes. First,
they leave their potatoes on the terraces for a few nights, so the potato separates from
the water. Then, they dance on the potatoes, so they get peeled. Last, they leave it in
the sun for a few days. When we were on the terraces we saw a soccer stadium. After
we saw the potatoes, we went to see how the Quechua dyed the sheeps wool using
natural plant color. First, they had to clean the wool. They used a special root to wash
the wool. Second, they showed us which plant or root to use when dying different colors.
You can also change the shade of the colors by putting lemon juice or salt in it. In the
Quechua store we also saw guinea pigs, I touched one. On the way to Ollantaytambo
we saw a beautiful lake. We also saw sheep crossing the road in front of us. After we saw
that, we went to the most monumental architectural complexes of the ancient Inca Em-
pire, one of the few places where the Spanish conquistadors lost a major battle. Very
well known for its andenes (terraces dug into the slopes of the mountains for agricultur-
al purposes), Ollantaytambo was a highly effective fortress that also served as a temple.
We also saw a water temple there. After the terraces we went to a buffet lunch. It was
awesome! Their delicacy is ceviche, guinea pig, and alpaca. They have a yummy drink
called Chicha Morada which is made out of purple corn. In Peru there is another kind of
cola. It is called Inca Cola. It tastes like bubble gum.

After we ate lunch we went to our hotel. After we settled in, we went to see the Urubam-
ba River. We had to cross two rickety wooden bridges by car. It was a scary ride. Once
we reached the Urubamba River we had so much fun taking pictures and throwing rocks
in the river. After that we went back to the hotel.
Day5: Today we are going to Machu Picchu. First we have to take a train from Ollantay-
tambo to Aguas Calientes. The train ride was awesome. They even served Inca Cola.
We saw snowcapped mountains on the way. The Urubamba River was all along the train
track while we were traveling. We saw some people rafting in the river. Sometimes when
the train turned we saw the trains end. From the train station we had to take a bus ride
to the top of Machu Picchu. The bus ride was a little bumpy. Once we got there we start-
ed walking. Did you know that Machu Picchu means Old Mountain? Hiram Bingham
was said to be looking for the lost Inca site of Vilcabamba when he hiked up the slopes
to the widespread ruins of Machu Picchu, tucked away in the rocky countryside north-
west of Cuzco, Peru. Machu Picchu is believed to have been a royal estate or sacred
religious site for Inca leaders, whose civilization was virtually wiped out by Spanish in-
vaders in the 16th century. The site stretches over an impressive 5-mile distance, featuring
more than 3,000 stone steps that link its many different levels. The summit of Huayna Pic-
chu, also known as Wayna Picchu, gives trekkers a birds-eye view of Machu Picchu.
Now its time for us to go back to our home leaving behind all these good memories of
the great Inca Civilization which I will cherish for years to come.
Wishing all the very best for

An Encounter with the Tigress of Ranthambhore
Ranjan Mukherjee
The Ranthambhore tigress.
The warning growl, a flash of orange, tension crackling in the air: a tiger is near!
This is what I had imagined and wanted to experience. Mention the word tiger and
India comes to mind. So, a few years ago, my wife, son and I decided to visit
Ranthambhore, a one-time princely hunting ground turned tiger preserve, located 112
miles from Jaipur, the capital of Rajasthan, a state in western India.
We stayed in a luxury tent, once used to accommodate guests during tiger hunts in the
last century. This irony did not escape us. That evening we went on a safari. We saw sever-
al deer who seemed alert and restless. The forest guide said they sense the presence of a
tiger nearby, but we saw no tigers. We returned to camp slightly depressed, had dinner
around a blazing campfire under the stars and went to bed hoping for better luck the
next day.
Next morning we woke early, had tea and biscuits and left for a second safari. It was still
dark and freezing cold. We had sweaters and jackets but were still glad for the blankets
-

that were in the Jeep. Routes in the forest were selected by lottery. I drew a number and
we proceeded into the forest. We drove for a while on the prescribed route. We saw
fresh pugmarks, a hopeful sign. We came across three Himalayan black bears, a mother
with two cubs. They came frolicking down the hillside right in front of our car, saw us,
turned and ran. They were hilarious to watch but kicked up so much dust it was hard to
get a good photo. Still, no tiger. The sun rose, the temperature started to rise along with
our anxiety. We continued driving with a sharp look out on all sides.
Suddenly, as we were driving up the slope of a hill, we saw the silhouette of a tigress
against the skyline, right next to the car track. She turned and started walking away from
us. The driver drove faster to catch up. We gazed, spellbound. She was a magnificent
animal, beautiful and fearless. She paused behind a bush and turned to look at us. Her
coat was bright orange with jet black stripes and blended perfectly with the dry leaves
of the winter forest. At that moment I truly understood the meaning of camouflage and
how tigers became such stealthy, effective hunters. I told the driver to stop, grabbed my
camera and took a photo.
We returned to camp with great joy. It is very rare to see tigers in the wild and we were
extremely fortunate to see the tigress and the bears. We left with incredible memories
and great photos. The picture of the tigress is now the background of my computer
desktop. It elicits gasps of admiration from viewers and gives me a chance now and
then, to tell the story of our encounter with the tigress of Ranthambhore.

Anshoo Vs. Religions Taught in School
Why do we teach only about Christianity and Judaism in school?
Why do we have to learn about a religion even if we do not practice it?
Anshoo Saha
A survey that, I myself took, says that 8 out of 8 people that I asked would
like to learn more about other religions in school other than Judaism and Christi-
anity. These religions are very major and practiced still today even after 2000
years but in the earlier grade, we had studied these same religions. Why again
are we learning about these religions and these religions only?
I asked my teacher the question and she said, Well these religions were
very involved in government in the renaissance era, it is also the basis for many
other religions, and it is considered by some as the first modern religion. First of all
it is not the first religion. People practicing Hinduism date back to 5000 years ago,
this is 3000 years before than Christianity. Although Buddhism is younger than Ju-
daism by 1000 years, it is still practiced by just as many. It is also not the first mod-
ern religion because Hinduism and Buddhism are still practiced today. Christianity
and Judaism have both inspired other religions but that does not justify why it is
taught in schools.
Religion is something that should be practiced at a church or temple or
your home, not where you learn mathematics and science. Christianity was in-
volved in the government during the renaissance era, and I consider this a bad
thing. If you were the Pope, you would have had great power and could have
more power than a king. Now the Pope still does hold power but it is much, much
less than before. Why a person of a specific religion and his /her occupation is re-
ligion, have much power over citizens that do not follow that religion?
This, in my opinion, makes absolutely no sense. The students (whom I sur-
veyed) themselves have said that, they have already learned about Judaism
and Christianity, and want to learn about the religions that havent been cov-
ered much in school.
