A welcoming glow from the gorgeous south room windows welcomes passersby to the Caspar Community Center. Inside there might be a cooking class, movie or talk going on. It could be you can hear the sounds of African or Taiko drumming, or the music from the tango or African dancers or the swing and English country dance groups. On a weekday you might see streams of youngsters moving between Music Together class and the playground for tots; or older kids taking 4-H classes and

playing on the bigger kids’ slide and swings. Entire families may be working in the Community Garden. A joyous wedding reception may be going on in the dance hall room, complete with stage for a band, and the dining room, serving a catered meal from the magnificently equipped brand new kitchen. If it is a Sunday morning, you would see over a hundred people enjoying a gourmet Fourth Sunday Breakfast, whereas a Friday night would find the same people and friends overflowing the now famous Second Friday Pub Night, with hosted open mic and gourmet pub food from guest chefs. Whatever you find going on—and there is always something happening in Caspar—you will realize this is community in the making

You’ll recognize faces from up and down the coast—and perhaps you’ll wonder how did this happen? Wasn’t Caspar just a sleepy little town set west of the highway only a few years ago, except for weekends when the Caspar Inn was hopping?

The transformation, still very much in progress, began in 1997 when most of the downtown area on the west side and the undeveloped land on the east side of the highway went on the market. People who had never known each other, but had an emotional connection to Caspar, came together in monthly community meetings to figure out what they would like to have happen with these three hundred acres. The community worked hard, helped by Professor Randy Hester of U.C. Berkeley and his team of graduate landscape architect students. Casparados articulated their dreams, and set about to make them come true. And what a heart-filled, exciting time it has been.

Caspar defined the areas sacred to its sense of community and over several years, with the help of The Trust for Public Land, the Mendocino Land Trust, and California State Parks, it successfully lobbied for state funds to purchase 150 acres of the Caspar Headlands and Caspar Creek riparian area and set them aside as permanent open space. The Caspar Community was formed as a nonprofit 501(c)(3) organization, and articulated its mission: to enhance and preserve the quality of all life in Caspar.

Casparados see Caspar as a state of mind not a geographic boundary. It champions inclusiveness—welcoming everyone with ideas, energy, and dreams and seeks to base all decisions and actions on Community Consensus. The Caspar Community opened lines of communication with the owner of the surrounding lands, Mendocino County Planning and the Department of Public Works, the California Coastal Commission, the California Coastal Conservancy, and legislative representatives. A professional website and a periodic newsletter provide an information repository and way of spreading the word among friends of Caspar. Caspar’s unique planning process has been discussed on the front page of The New York Times, Los Angeles Times, Preservation magazine, San Francisco Magazine, Press Democrat, The Mendocino Beacon, Fort Bragg Advocate-News, and of course this Real Estate Magazine. When even television programs about Caspar were broadcast on the BBC and California Connected, everyone began to know about Caspar and its unique and successful means of consensual self-governance, and about its dream of creating a sustainable community. In Caspar, everything is always on the agenda—seniors living successfully with young working families,

When Casparados Susan and Jerry Juhl offered Caspar Community the down payment forthe old Caspar Schoolhouse, in 2002, the community jumped at the chance, realizing that having a physical center of operations and gathering place would serve as the seed around which

a sustainable community could crystalize. And what a landmark it has become. With bridge financing from Casparados Ruth and Mike Dell’Ara, and final loan funding from U.S. Department of Agriculture Rural Development division, the Caspar Community Center, under the direction of the board and the management of Dalen Anderson has become a coast-wide institution.

In just ten years, the community has restored and improved the Caspar Community Center to make it fit for its intended purpose. Two major remodels designed by Daniel Dickson, one in 2003 by John Wozniak and one just completed by Matson Construction, have stabilized the building with a new foundation and other structural necessities, met ADA requirements, and added a new kitchen and sunroom. Community members under the guidance of contractor John Wozniak and architect Daniel Dickson, built a postal pavilion to keep Casparados dry while they gather mail and enjoy Paul Reiber’s corbels sculpted in honor of Jerry Juhl, and funded by the A.D. Abramson Award for Public Art under the auspices of The Community Foundation of Mendocino County. Volunteers have carried the workload these past ten years. Out of the vigor of Paul Garvin, Kim Morgan, and Judy Tarbell, a community garden grew in the northeast corner of the property. Current Community Garden managers are Laurie and Nathan Brown and their gardening kids, Tasahra and Tauren. Bette Goldfarb created a community lending library; Center director Dalen Anderson and a growing group of volunteer cooks and servers created the now famous gourmet Fourth Sunday Breakfasts; David Alden and Jessie Lee vanSant created the music of Pub Night, with a fleet of volunteer chefs and servers offering more fantastic

meals; Marissa Cohen and Gunnar Guinan wrested together the grants, donations and labor necessary to build—with Alan Harris and crew—a childrens’ playground. The result of a weekend workshop was the clay pizza oven, now featured at every major Caspar event. Casparados worked hard but played hard, too: our annual community festival, CasparFest, grew to include myriad groups for a weekend of music, face painting, crafts fair, workshops, and of course our village mascot, Gertie the Gorse Monster, led by musician Joe Craven in a parade through the festival grounds. Gorse is Caspar’s nemesis. Caroline Schooley, Ray Duff, Guil Dye, Bette Goldfarb, Bob Zoller, Jug Handle State Reserve, and myriad others are working to eradicate gorse both by hand removal and machine-based mechanical removal on Caspar Headlands, Jug Handle State Reserve, and private property. The Caspar Fire Safe Council, with grant funds, has jump-started extensive gorse removal. The Council also succeeded in getting CalFire to install a

fire hookup in Caspar Pond. Everything happens because of the enthusiasm, creativity, and yes, endurance of a growing number of volunteers. Each breakfast, for example, involves upwards of a hundred volunteer hours. Casparados have formed deep attachments to the Community Center, as it stands as a symbol of all that Caspar is and can be. It is the heart of our community. But it is also available to everyone from anywhere. The Center is rented for numerous special events—birthday parties, wedding receptions and extravaganzas, conferences and meetings. Call the Center at 964-4997 or visit the website—http://casparcommons.org —and Center director Dalen Anderson will help you make your dreams come true. You will not only have a world-class location for your event; you will also become part of the fabric of Caspar as it seeks to realize its dream of sustainable community.

With the construction of its new sunny south room and magnificent new kitchen now complete, the community is looking forward to revisiting its long list of projects, probably commencing with investigating the possibility of a community-owned water system, a Caspar fire sub-station, and outfitting the Community Center as a disaster relief center. Perhaps the future will see the formation of the frequently discussed Caspar Community Land Trust, allowing for community ownership of the land upon which private owners would build homes and commercial buildings under ninety-nine-year renewable leases.

Perhaps you’ll be part of this far-reaching quest by a little village on the edge of the continent to achieve self-governance and a sustainable footprint.

Does this sound intriguing to you? Do you look in from the outside and wonder if you would be welcome? Consider this: the current president of the board, Miriam Davis, moved to Caspar a few years ago, started volunteering and now finds herself President of Caspar Community. Caspar not only welcomes but thrives on finding new Casparados to share its vision.

Might you want to be on the board of directors? Start a project of your own, like a long-sought-after local bakery? Be part of planning for Caspar’s future?

Call the Center at 964-4997, or e-mail [email protected], or call/e-mail any of the current or past board members (see list below). We look forward to your energy and dreams.
