1. ASSEMBLY PROCEDURES OF THE AN/PRC-119.

a. INSTALL THE BATTERY.

(1) Visually Inspect battery box for dirt and damage. If battery has been previously used, note battery life condition number.

(2) Stand RT on front panel guards; place battery box on RT. Secure using latches.

(3) Check battery life condition (written on battery if battery is not new).

(4) Write down number (for later entry into radio).

(5) Place battery in battery box and mate connectors.

(6) Close battery box cover, and secure using latches.

(7) Return radio to upright position.

b. BATTERY LIFE CONDITION. If a used battery was installed, enter the battery life condition into the radio by performing the following:

(1) Set FCTN to LD.

(2) Press BATT (Display shows two numbers; then CLR.

(3) Enter number recorded on side of battery.

(4) Press STO.

(5) Set FCTN to SQ ON.

c. CONNECT THE ANTENNA.

(1) Screw antenna into antenna base.

(2) Hand tighten. (Important not to over-tighten.)

(3) Carefully mate antenna base with RT ANT connector.

(4) Hand tighten. (Important not to over-tighten.)

(5) Position antenna as needed by bending goose neck.

CAUTIONDO NOT USE ANTENNA AS A HANDLE. EQUIPMENT DAMAGE MAY RESULT.

d. CONNECT THE HANDSET. Connect the handset H-250 to the AUD/DATA connector on the front of the RT.

e. INSTALL THE HUB. Remove the HUB cover and install the HUB, (BA-1372/BA-5372), with the flat end (+) first. Re-install the HUB cover. The screws must be tight enough to keep out moisture. DO NOT CROSS THREAD THE SCREWS!

f. CONDUCT A SELF TEST.

(1) Set the function switch to Z-FH and check the memory. “GOOD” should appear in the display window.

(2) Set the COMSEC switch to CT.

(3) Set the FCTN switch to TST and observe the following:

(a) ECCM (E) AND COMSEC MODULE (C) CHECK. If either module is not in the RT, a dash is shown in place of the letter. Short bursts of rushing noise should be heard. If “E” is displayed, a beep should be heard after the rushing noise.

(b) SIGNAL STRENGTH DISPLAY CHECK. lights at all positions from LO to HI. Display check lights all dots as shown.

(c) At the end of a successful self-test, “GOOD” will appear in the display.

(d) If the display shows any FAIL codes, check all switch positions and connections, then re-initiate the self-test. If a FAIL CODE appears again follow appropriate troubleshooting techniques.

(e) If a fail code appears again refer to the FAIL CODES. With the exception of fail-1 and fail 1 & 7 flashing, routine procedures would be to turn the RT into 2nd echelon maintenance for repair.

1 FAIL – 1. Receive failure (check PM of handset and audio connectors, and check for proper seating of antenna and audio accessories.

2. AN/PRC-119 SINGLE CHANNEL CONFIGURATION.

a. PROGRAM A SINGLE CHANNEL FREQUENCY.

(1) Obtain authorized operating frequency from CEOI or NCS.

(2) Refer to the illustration of RT front panel above: then set FCTN to LD.

(3) Set MODE to SC.

(4) Set CHAN to MAN, CUE, or desired channel (1 - 6) where frequency is to be stored.

(5) Press FREQ (display will show "00000", or to frequency RT is currently tuned).

(6) Press CLR (display will show five lines).

(7) Enter the numbers of the new frequency (using keyboard buttons).

(a) If you make a mistake while entering a frequency, press CLR (this action will delete the last digit entered).

NOTE: It is important that you enter another number, or store the frequency within 7 seconds. Otherwise, the display will go blank, and you will have to re-enter the numbers. If you require more than 7 seconds to perform a step, continue to press the last button, and the 7 second clock will be stopped.

(8) Press STO (display will blink and show the frequency you just stored).

(9) Repeat steps 1 thru 8 for additional frequencies that you wish to load.

(10) Set FCTN to SQ ON (or normal operating position).

b. CLEAR A SINGLE CHANNEL FREQUENCY. If you wish to clear a frequency from the RT, you must perform the following procedure using the correct switch settings and pressing FREQ, CLR, LOAD, and STO. When no frequency is desired, pressing STO stores no frequency in the RT permanent memory.

(1) Set MODE to SC.

(2) Set CHAN to MAN, CUE, or desired channel where frequency is to be cleared.

(3) Press FREQ.

(4) Press CLR.

(5) Press LOAD: then press STO.

(6) Set FCTN to SQ ON (or normal operating position).

c. PROGRAM AN OFFSET FREQUENCY. It may be necessary to offset an SC frequency that is loaded in your RT. Your NCS will direct you to offset your SC frequency when it is necessary. This procedure allows you to change the SC frequency by plus or minus 5 kHz or plus or minus 10 kHz.

(1) Set FCTN to SQ ON.(2) Set CHAN to MAN, CUE, or desired channel (1 - 6) to be

loaded with offset.

(3) Press FREQ, OFST, and CHG.

(4) Continue to press CHG until desired offset is displayed.

c. CLEARING AN OFFSET FREQUENCY. When you wish to clear the SC frequency of the offset, simply continue to press CHG until "00" is displayed. The SC frequency will return to the original frequency before the offset was loaded.

d. SCANNING. The RT can scan up to eight preset SC frequencies (all positions of CHAN). When a signal is found, the RT will “lock in” on the channel. The keyboard will then show the channel number that has been ‘locked-in”. You can listen and transmit on that channel. When the channel has been inactive for 2.5 seconds, scanning will continue.

(1) Use the following procedure to set up the RT to begin scanning.

1 Set FCTN to SQ ON, SQ OFF, or RXMT.

2 Set MODE to FH.

3 Set CHAN to CUE.

4 Set COMSEC to PT.

5 Set other controls as needed.

6 Press STO (display will show “SCAN-“).

7 Enter a number on the keyboard, 0 - 7 (display will show the number entered; scanning has now begun).

(2) The number entered will be scanned more often than the other channels. This channel is a priority channel. If you do not want any channel to have priority, enter the number 8.

(3) If you wish to transmit on the priority channel (channel number you entered on keyboard), key the transmitter. When you key down, the display will show “CH” followed by the priority channel number.

(4) To Transmit on a “Locked-in” Channel: Press handset push-to-talk and talk (you must do this within 2.5 seconds after the traffic has stopped or scanning will begin again).

(5) To Select a Channel for Transmission: Enter number for channel on keyboard (press PTT switch within 2.5 seconds after display shows channel number selected).

(6) To Cancel a Channel from Scan Sequence: Enter channel number on keyboard that you wish to delete (the priority channel cannot be deleted); then press CLR. Scanning will begin again and the cancelled channel number will not "lock in”.

(7) To Restore a Canceled Channel: Enter number of channel-that was cancelled on keyboard (display will show "CH" and the channel number entered). The channel is now back in the scanning sequence.

(8) To Scan While “Locked-In” on a Channel: Press STO.To Check Frequency of “Locked-In” Channel: Press FREQ while channel number is on display (display will change to show frequency of channel).

(9) To Stop Scanning: Set CHAN (or MODE) to different position.

3. AN/PRC-119 FREQUENCY HOPPING CONFIGURATION. FH is a preferred method of communication because it changes frequencies more than 100 times per second, making it difficult to jam.

a. LOADING CRYPTOGRAPHIC DATA. Preparation for FH operation includes FH data loading and COMSEC key loading, if you will be communicating in a net using secure communication.

(1) Use the following procedure to load Cryptographic (COMSEC) data: This procedure will send only cryptographic data (i.e. TEK or KEK) to the RT.

(2) Set RT controls to CT, LD, and the appropriate channel; then select RADIO on the ANCD.

NOTE: PRIOR TO LOADING ANY CRYPROGRAPHIC OR FREQUENCY HOPPING DATA, ENSURE THAT YOU PRESS THE “PUSH TO TALK” BUTTON ON THE HANDSET TWO TIMES. THIS WILL CLEAR THE COMSEC ALARM.

(3) Select COMSEC, then select LD.

(4) Select key type, TEK or KEK; then select the appropriate key and press ENTER.

(5) After you have selected a key you will see a signal in the bottom of the screen that says XMT; Select quit, then press ENTER.

(6) Connect the ANCD to the RT and press enter on the ANCD; Then press LOAD on the RT.

(7) The ANCD will begin the transfer, and you will receive a message that states transfer successful.

b. LOADING FREQUENCY HOPPING DATA. Use the following procedure to load frequency hopping (FH) data; This ICOM Fill procedure loads the radio with COMSEC keys, FH data, and sync time for all six SINCGARS channels.

(1) Set RT controls to CT, LD, FH, and MAN.

(2) Turn on the CYZ-10 and select APPLICATION, and then select RADIO.

(3) Select SEND, then select RADIO.

(4) Select ICOM, then connect ANCD to RT.

(5) The ANCD will ask you to turn the FCTN control to LD, then it will ask if you want to include time. Select NO.

(6) Press LOAD on RT, the ANCD will begin the transfer.

(7) If the transfer was successful, you will receive a message that states: ICOM transfer successful.

c. MANUALLY LOAD TIME. Use the following procedure in order to manually load time.

(1) Obtain running GPS time from ANCD or PLGR.

(2) Press [TIME] on RT; display shows “DD.“

(3) Press [CLR] on RT; display shows ”- -’”

(4) Enter correct Julian Date; display shows “XX.”

(5) Press [STO] on RT; Julian Date is stored.

(6) Press [TIME] on RT; display shows “HH MM.”

(7) Press [CLR] on RT; display shows ” _ _ _ _.”

(8) Enter GPS HH; display shows “HH.”

(9) Enter MM, the minute ahead of GPS time.

(10) When RT and GPS minutes are the same (zeroseconds), press [STO] on RT.

(11) If time stored in RT is more than one seconddifferent from GPS time, reload sync time.

(12) Manual loading of GPS sync time is complete.

d. LOAD TIME ON AN AN/PRC-119 UTILIZING AN AN/PSN-11.

(1) AN/PSN-11 CHARACTERISTICS. The AN/PSN-11 or Precision Lightweight Global Positioning Receiver (PLGR) is a lightweight, battery powered hand held personal navigational system that receives data from GPS satellites and computes 3D positions, and time.

(2) AN/PSN-11 COMPONENTS. The components are identified in the diagram below:

1 POWER BATTERY COVER. Operates by using lithium, nickel cadmium, or eight AA batteries if you have a special holder

2 DISPLAY. A four-line alpha/numeric window which holds 16 characters per line.

3 KEYPAD Consists of 12 multifunction keys to control PLGR Operations. This section will discuss only those keys which the SINCGARS operator may use to check and load radio sync time.

a 0 THROUGH 9. These keys are used to enter numbers.

b ON/BRT. Pressing the ON/BRT button once turns the PLGR on; holding this key down with PLGR on enables the operator to adjust the display backlighting using up/down arrows.

c UP/DOWN ARROW. These keys are used to change display pages, change number/alpha field values, activate functions, and adjust brightness.

d LEFT/RIGHT ARROW. These keys are used to move the cursor from field to field in the display.

e MENU. Pressing the MENU key once displays first page of the system menu; pressing it a second time displays the second page.

f CLR. With the keypad in numeric lock, the CLR key is used to move the cursor to the left erasing wrong entries.

g OFF. Pressing the OFF key once starts a 30-second shut down process; pressing it a second time shuts down the PLGR immediately.

h NUM/LOCK. Pressing NUM LOCK toggles the keypad between control and numeric modes. An “N” is displayed at lower right when NUM LOCK IS on.

4 HANDLE. Designed to easily insert your left hand between the handle and the PLGR.

5 MEMORY BATTERY COVER. Houses the memory battery, which is changed annually.

6 INTEGRAL ANTENNA. Swivels up for the best signal reception.

7 J1 CONNECTOR. Connects the PLGR to either the CYZ-10, KYK-13, or KOI-18 COMSEC devices, and the AN/PRC-119.

a Allows the installation of crypto fills into the PLGR.

b Allows the time-fill data to be sent to a SINGARS radio.

(3) TIME LOADING PROCEDURES WITH AN AN/PSN-11. This procedure allows an NCS or SINCGARS operator to transfer date and time directly from directly from a PLGR into a SINCGARS radio. It represents the preferred method of loading sync time into an RT when a PLGR is available, especially for NCS personnel.

(1) Press ON/BRT to turn the PLGR on.

(2) Observe PLGR perform self-test.

(3) Press PLGR MENU key; this PLGR screen should appear.

(5) Press PLGR right arrow to select MODE Type; then Press PLGR down arrow to select CONT. This PLGR screen should appear. When the mode has changed to CONT, the PLGR begins to track satellites in order determine accurate location and time.

(6) Press PLGR MENU key again; this PLGR screen should appear.

(5) Press PLGR right arrow four times to highlight SINCGARS; then press PLGR down arrow to select SINCGARS. This PLGR screen should appear.

(6) Press PLGR left arrow to highlight ACTIVATE (Do NOT press down arrow ACTIVATE yet)

(7) Connect PLGR to RT AUD/FILL port.

(8) Set RT FCTN to LD.

(9) Press PLGR down arrow to select ACTIVATE.

(10) Press LOAD on RT.

(11) Press PLGR down arrow to select QUIT; loading time utilizing an AN/PSN-11 is now completed.

4. TROUBLESHOOTING PROCEDURES OF THE AN/PRC-119. While the reliability of the SINCGARS radio has been thoroughly proven in tests and troop unit experience, an operator can expect to encounter some problems, especially when the radio and the associated equipment are used together for various reasons.

a. Four problems are experienced most often. They are:

(1) Loading RT with COMSEC and FH data from ANCD fails

(2) Operator is unable to contact the net NCS

(3) Operator hears no traffic on the net.

(4) Radio presents strange message or noise that will not clear.

b. Any of these problems may be caused by an equipment failure. But, these problems can also be caused by operator

error, improperly set controls, weak batteries, loose connections, or use of wrong data.

c. The Troubleshooting Guides which follow offer the operator systematic procedures for identifying and eliminating common faults, helping the operator to maintain communications.

(1) PROBLEMS LOADING RT WITH COMSEC/FH DATA FROM AN ANCD.

**** The possibility that there is no traffic on the net must be considered, so try to contactyour NCS to check serviceability of your radio.

(4) PROBLEMS WITH STRANGE MESSAGES OR NOISES THAT WILL NOT CLEAR.
