AN OPPORTUNITY TO SEE THE WORLD

As a member of the basketball program at the University of Iowa, education often expands beyond the classroom to various parts of the United States and the world.

Over the years, the Iowa basketball team has visited Alaska, Australia, Hawaii, London, Paris, Hong Kong, San Juan, Puerto Rico, the French Riviera, Switzerland, Italy, Belgium, Amsterdam, England, the Great Wall of China, the Virgin Islands and other exciting parts of the world. This season, the Hawkeyes will spend the Thanksgiving holiday at the South Padre Island Invitational.

Every four years the Iowa basketball team is permitted to take an overseas exhibition trip during the summer. During the 2003 summer, members of the Iowa program traveled in Australia during a " ve-game, 10-day exhibition tour, visiting Sydney, Brisbane and Cairns. This summer the Iowa basketball program will again travel overseas on an exhibition tour.

Early last season the Hawkeyes took part in the Paradise Jam, an eight team event held in St. Thomas, Virgin Islands. Iowa started the 2005-06 season by competing in the Guard-ians Classic for the second time in " ve seasons. After winning two games on their home % oor, the Hawkeyes advanced to the Final Four of the event that also included Kentucky, Texas and West Virginia. Iowa advanced to the title game with a win over ninth-ranked Kentucky before second-ranked Texas handed Iowa its " rst loss of the year in the title game.

The Hawkeye basketball team returned to Hawaii during the 2005 season, placing second in the EA Sports Maui Invitational. Facing a tournament " eld that included Louisville,

North Carolina, Stanford, Texas, Tennessee and Brigham Young, the Maui Invitational is one of the top tournaments of the year. The Hawkeyes defeated Louisville and Texas in the " rst two rounds before a loss to North Carolina, the eventual national champion, in the championship game.

Iowa took part in the Rainbow Classic in 2001, placing third in the eight team tournament in Honolulu, Hawaii. The Hawkeyes won the Maui Invitational in 1987, placed second in the Rainbow Classic in 1995 and also competed in the Maui Invitational in 1997.

Early in the 2002 season, Iowa placed second in the 16-team Guardians Classic, an exempt tournament sponsored by the National Association of Basketball Coaches (NABC). Iowa defeated Memphis in the semi-" nals before a one-point loss to Missouri in the champion-ship game. All four teams which advanced to the semi-" nals, played at Kemper Arena in Kansas City, were nationally ranked.

In 1999-2000, Iowa opened the season in the IKON Coaches vs. Cancer Classic, playing two games in Madison Square Garden in New York City, competing against Connecticut, Stanford and Duke. Iowa defeated Connecticut, the defending NCAA champion, in the " rst round before falling to Stanford in the championship game.

During the 1998 summer, the Hawkeyes spent nearly two weeks in England, playing games against professional clubs there. Yet, more than basketball was being played. The Hawkeyes were able to develop relationships and experience cultures that transcend be-yond the basketball court.

When the Hawkeyes travel they do so by charter % ight, which allows for the safest and easiest travel possible to and from road games.

IOWA BASKETBALL IN THE SPOTLIGHT

The spotlight of media coverage follows the Iowa basketball team throughout the year.

With no professional sports teams in the state of Iowa, Hawkeye athletes are in the spotlight around the state and the Midwest. All Hawkeye games are covered by newspaper, radio and television outlets through-out the state, along with the exposure of having all games televised on regional and national telecasts.

Hawkeye basketball players learn to handle the exposure on almost a daily basis, improving their communication skills throughout their ca-reers while dealing with the media throughout each season.

During the 2005-06 season, Iowa appeared on national television 13 times over the course of the season, including a back-to-back games on CBS in the semi-" nals and championship game of the Big Ten Confer-ence Tournament. A year ago, nearly one third of Iowa games were also on national television.

During the upcoming season, more than 30 Hawkeye basketball games will be televised. With the addition of the Big Ten Network, a national cable network, an unprecedented number of games will have national television coverage.

A year ago, 30 of 31 Hawkeye basketball games were televised.

A large gathering of media representatives were on hand in Carver-Hawkeye Arena when Todd Lickliter was introduced as men’s basketball coach at the University of Iowa.

2008 IOWA BASKETBALL

IOWA BASKETBALL! 2007!2008 OUTLOOKThe 2007-08 basketball season at the University of Iowa will feature a number of new faces, both on the court and on the sidelines, as Todd Lickliter and his sta$ take over leadership of the Hawkeye program.

Lickliter takes over as Iowa’s head coach after leading the program at Butler Uni-versity for six seasons. Lickliter posted a 131-61 (.682) mark with the Bulldogs, taking two teams to the NCAA Sweet Sixteen. Butler posted a 29-7 overall record a year ago, set-ting a school record for total wins and conference wins.

Lickliter was named national Coach of the Year by the Na-tional Association of Basket-ball Coaches last season. The Bulldogs advanced to the Sweet Sixteen for the second time under Lickliter, falling to eventual national champion Florida (65-57) after opening the NCAA Tournament with wins over Old Dominion and Maryland.

Lickliter’s sta$ at Iowa includes a pair of former Butler Univer-sity players, as LaVall Jordan and Joel Cornette, members of the Butler sta$ a year ago, have joined their college coach at Iowa. The third Hawkeye assistant, Chad Walthall, served as the head basketball coach at Loras College for the last seven seasons.

Along with a new sta$ , the Hawkeye roster includes three new faces, along with three returning starters and six lettermen from a team that posted a 17-14 overall record a year ago. Iowa tied for fourth place in the Big Ten Conference last season with a 9-7 record. Iowa has posted seven straight winning seasons, matching the longest streak in school history. The Hawkeyes won 25 games and the Big Ten Conference post-season tournament in 2006 and advanced to the NCAA Tournament in both 2005 and 2006.

A key to Iowa’s success has been playing well in Carver-Hawkeye Arena, where

the Hawkeyes will host 18 games this season. Iowa was a perfect 17-0 in Carver-Hawkeye Arena in 2005-06 and last season posted a 14-2 mark. Iowa is 15-1 in Big Ten home games over the past two seasons.

While the Hawkeyes return three starters, Lickliter and his sta$ must replace the top two scorers and re-bounders from a year ago. Guard Adam Haluska, a sec-ond round selection in the most recent NBA draft (New Orleans), not only led Iowa in scoring (20.5), but also led the Big Ten in scoring. Haluska earned " rst team all-Big Ten honors and was also an academic all-Ameri-can. Along with his scoring, Haluska was second on the team in rebounding (4.6) and steals (53) and third in assists (80).

Forward Tyler Smith, who was named to the Big Ten Conference all-Freshman team, must also be replaced. Smith led the team in re-bounding (4.9) and joined Haluska as the only Hawkeye to average over 10 points per game (14.9). Smith trans-ferred closer to his home to be near his ailing father.

The returning starters include junior guard Tony Freeman (6-1, 190), junior forward Cyrus Tate (6-8, 240) and se-nior center Kurt Looby (6-10, 210). Additional returning lettermen include junior guard J.R. Angle (6-7, 200); senior center Seth Gorney (7-0, 245) and senior guard Justin Johnson (6-6, 190).

Since taking over as Iowa’s head coach in April, Lickliter has had a chance to work with his Hawkeye squad and begin preparing for his " rst year in the Big Ten Con-ference.

“I think the players have reacted well,” said Lickliter. “Change is hard. We’ve talked about the coach’s transition, but the players are going through a transition as

Junior forward Cyrus Tate (left) and senior center Seth Gorney (right) are two veterans who saw plenty of action a year ago.

2008 IOWA BASKETBALL

IOWA BASKETBALL! 2007!2008 OUTLOOKwell. It’s a daily process, us getting to know one another, and, building a trust. I wouldn’t be at the University of Iowa if I hadn’t had teams that were successful. We have somewhat of a proven track record. This is a system that can be success-ful, and the players make that happen. They make it happen by committing, and by using their talents and strengths to form a stronger team than the total; the total is greater than the sum of the parts. This group has shown a real desire to be the best they can be.”

“We have had to evaluate this group in a short period of time,” admitted Lickliter. “They have had success the last two years. They have proven they have the ability to compete and win in the Big Ten Conference. We want to build on that while " nding a balance between patience and urgency. It will be a learning process of how we want to play the game. We will focus on doing the best we can do today, at a rate where we can compete at the highest level.”

Lickliter built his success at Butler with well-coached basketball teams that val-ued the basketball on o$ ense and played solid man-to-man defense. Butler, last season, led the nation in fewest turnovers per game. “We want our team to value the basketball, and to be determined to create the shot we want,” explained the Hawkeye head coach. “We want to defend with a purpose, and support our team-mates. We want to be strong defensively, within the system. We will be primarily a man to man defensive team, but we will also incorporate our defense to give us the best chance to win basketball games.”

While the Hawkeyes don’t return a proven scorer over the course of a full season, Lickliter is con" dent his " rst Iowa team can " t together and play well. “We will evaluate where our points come from,” noted Lickliter. “We will replace our losses from last season as a team; di$ erent players will have that opportunity. We’ll have to let the scoring come as we move forward. No one or two players have to replace the losses; we will do that as a team.”

Freeman is the most experienced returning player, having started 21 games in his " rst two seasons. He started 17 of 31 games in 2007, leading the team in assists (3.7) while averaging 7.5 points and 2.9 rebounds per game. He scored a career-high 16 points against highly-regarded Alabama last season.

Looby joined the Iowa program two years ago after a two-year junior college ca-reer. He redshirted in 2006 before playing in all 31 games last season, starting 19. He averaged 3.8 points and 4.6 rebounds and led the team with 53 blocked shots, giving the Hawkeyes a defensive presence in the middle.

Tate started 22 games a year ago, in his " rst season at Iowa, averaging 4.2 points and 4.4 rebounds. He had a career-high 14 points, along with nine rebounds, in a home win over Michigan State and collected 11 points and 10 rebounds in a home win over Purdue.

Johnson also joined the Iowa program after playing two years at a junior college. He started seven games as a junior, averaging 5.4 points and 2.3 rebounds. Angle, after redshirting in 2006, started two games a year ago while averaging just un-der two points per game. IOWA BASKETBALL! 2007!2008 OUTLOOKAdditional returning players include sophomore forward David Palmer (6-9, 240) and sophomore guard Dan Bohall (6-4, 193). Palmer, who played one season at Seton Hall, redshirted last season. Bohall saw limited action in 11 games.

The trio of freshmen include point guard Je$ Peterson; forward Jarryd Cole and shooting guard Jake Kelly.

Peterson (6-0, 185) attended DeMatha HS in the Washington, DC area, earning " rst team all-conference honors as a senior. He averaged 13.9 points, 7.7 assists, 3.4 rebounds and 1.8 steals per game in leading DeMatha to a 33-6 record in his " nal prep season.

Cole (6-7, 250) gives the Hawkeyes another big body. He earned " rst team all-state honors as a senior at Winnetonka HS near Kansas City when he averaged 19.1 points, 13.7 rebounds and 5.2 blocked shots per game. He earned all-Metro honors for three seasons and was named Most Valuable Player in his conference as a senior.

Kelly (6-6, 180) attended Carmel, IN HS, averaging 13.7 points and 2.9 rebounds as a senior. He earned " rst team all-conference recognition and was team MVP for three seasons.

“Je$ , Jake and Jarryd will all " t well in our system,” said Lickliter. “They are the type of players, and student-athletes that we want to have in the program. All three can be successful here.”

The Hawkeyes open the season with four straight home games before meeting Bradley University in the South Padre Invitational (Nov. 23-24). The Hawkeyes will also meet either Vanderbilt or Utah State in that event before a quick trip home to host Wake Forest (Nov. 26) in the Big Ten/ACC Challenge. Iowa will host Louisiana-Monroe, Eastern Illinois and Rice in the annual Hawkeye Challenge.

The in-state series includes a home date with Drake (Dec. 14) after road games at Northern Iowa (Dec. 5) and Iowa State (Dec. 8). The Hawkeyes close the non-conference schedule by hosting Southeastern Louisiana (Dec. 29).

The Big Ten Conference has increased its conference schedule from 16 to 18 games, beginning this season. Iowa opens against Indiana at home before road games at Wisconsin and Ohio State. Illinois and Minnesota are the conference teams Iowa plays just once. The Fighting Illini visit Iowa City late in the season, while the only meeting with the Golden Gophers takes place in Minneapolis. The Big Ten Confer-ence Tournament (March 13-16) returns to Indianapolis.

“With the addition of two Big Ten games, you lose a home game, and you add another road game within the conference,” pointed out Lickliter. “That only adds to the strength of the schedule. The in-state series is good, yet very demanding. Those games, home or away, are on the level of Big Ten Conference games. It gives us the chance to compete against other well-respected programs within the state and prepare in a conference environment for the Big Ten season.”

Senior guard Justin Johnson ranked as one of the top three-point shooters in the Big Ten Conference in 2006-07.
