In 2010, David Spencer-Percival and Sir Peter Ogden partnered to open the specialist energy recruiter, Spencer Ogden.

Sir Peter Ogden (Chairman)

Following a Harvard education and a successful career in investment banking both in the UK & US with Merrill Lynch and Morgan Stanley, Sir Peter founded Computacenter PLC, Europe’s largest computer services company with 13,000 employees, Dealogic PLC the financial software and data company and FlyBlink the private jet company. This success allowed him to set up the Ogden Trust which pledges over £1m a year to support bright children from low income backgrounds. Sir Peter is a doctor of civil law and science and a fellow of Hughes Hall Cambridge. He received a knighthood for services to education from Her Majesty the Queen in 2005.

David Spencer-Percival (Chief Executive)

David’s recruitment career spans over 15 years and involved working internationally with global companies providing recruitment services. David was a founder of recruitment giant Huntress Group where he was a group Board Director and managed the technology division as well as developing the now coveted graduate academy. When Huntress Group was sold for £52 million in 2007 to Nomura private equity it was one of the leading, award winning recruitment businesses in the UK with 500 staff and 27 offices.

Nuclear power is undergoing a period of change due to the need for cleaner methods of generating electricity as well as the reality that fuels are likely to be phased out due to their environmental impact.

With investments in new Generation III technology by various companies across the globe as well as the ability to extend safely the lifetime of existing nuclear plants, many governments now see nuclear power as a safe, cost efficient way to cut down on the cost of importing fuels and stop them being susceptible to fluctuating prices within the Energy market. This situation will mean that they will be a staggering increase in the demand for expertise and skills within the nuclear sector.

In 2008 the UK government gave the go ahead for a new generation of nuclear power stations. It said it would identify what it believed were the best sites for new reactors, streamline the planning process and set up a new independent body to monitor clean up costs. UK ministers hope that the first reactor could be operational by 2020. The UK government have suggested that the replacement nuclear power stations could be built on new sites not just those with existing plants

As of July 2008, there were over 430 operating nuclear power plants and together they provided approximatly 15 percent of the world’s electricity in 2007. Of these 31 countries, some depend more on nuclear power than others. For instance, in France, about 77 percent of the country’s electricity comes from nuclear power.

Demand for power is set to increase to 24,980 THh by 2015, a 25% increase. At present, thermal Power is one of the most widely used forms of power generation within over 1800 stations currently in operation or being built globally.

Increasingly, power generation sources are under pressure to reduce their environmental impact and significant investment is being made to develop environmentally safer technologies and increase efficiency. Subsequently Thermal Power is poised for staggering growth, with demand likely to expand by 62% by 2030. In turn this will result in an increase demand for manpower and expertise within the market.

Smart Energy

The demand in Europe for a sustainable, low-carbon economy cannot be met using the same power generation, energy combination and distribution technology that have served for over half a century. Subsequently something has to change.

One of the first challenges to overcome is to address the aging grids which have remained unchanged for 40 years. As more and more power sources are put online including micro-generation alternatives including wind and solar, more stress will be put on the grids.

The solution is to transform the grids from how they are today into intelligent energy networks which enable real-time management of load and demand. These new ‘smart grids’ are viewed as must haves for a sustainable, low-carbon economy.

Smart Metering is the first step of the journey to create a Smart Grid. In the UK alone the British Government and Ofgem want to bring Smart Metering into 27 million residential properties. These Smart Meters will allow consumers to analyse their energy consumption and eventually save energy emissions and ultimately money as new tariffs are introduced from the energy providers that are tailored to the different patterns of energy use

The mining industry has been key to the development of civilisation, underpinning the iron and bronze ages, the industrial revolution and the infrastructure of today’s information age. In 2001, the mining industry produced over 6 billion tons of raw product valued at several trillion dollars. Downstream beneficiation and minerals processing of these raw materials adds further value as raw materials and products are created to serve all aspects of industry and commerce worldwide.

The last decade of the twentieth century saw the creation of mega-commodity corporations that increasingly moved downstream into the beneficiation area, leaving exploration for new mineral deposits increasingly to small junior mining companies. Application of new technology has led to productivity gains across the value chain.

Apart from Antarctica (which has a treaty in place preventing short to medium term exploitation and exploration of minerals), mining takes place in all of the world’s continents. Traditional mining countries such as the USA, Canada, Australia, South Africa and Chile dominate the global mining scene. These countries have become the leaders in mining and exploration methods and technology. Exploration and development funding changes over recent years has led to the shifting of emphasis to areas that have been poorly explored or have had poor access for reasons of politics, infrastructure or legislation. Coal, gold, base metal, diamonds and platinum group elements (PGE’s) are the more important commodities explored for and developed globally. In addition to these, Rare Earth mining has become more prominent in recent years and forms a vital part of new technology gadgets such as IPads, Smart Phones and Energy-efficient cars such as the Toyota Prius.
