On 24 January 2015, Mr Vinod Tawade,Minister for School Education, Sportsand Youth Welfare, Higher and TechnicalEducation tweeted that Government ofMaharashtra (GOM) will buy 10 KingHenrys Road NW3 (where Dr Ambedkarlived in 1921-22), and turn it into a me-morial for Dr Ambedkar. There has beenconsiderable worldwide media interest inthis since the news broke that the househad been put up for sale. Mr Tawade’sannouncement has been received withconsiderable delight and pride by Ambed-karites here in the UK and around theworld.

10 King Henrys Road is alreadyregarded as a significant and culturallyhistoric site for Ambedkarites. It is in thishouse, Dr Ambedkar enriched his aca-demic studies at the London School ofEconomics and Grays Inn, and strength-ened his resolve to challenge Untoucha-bility, and British Rule in India. As partof the celebration of the centenary of DrAmbedkar’s birth organised under theauspices of the Federation of Ambed-karite and Buddhist Organisations UK(FABO UK), English Heritage recognisedin 1991, 10 King Henrys Road, NW3 andinstalled a ‘blue plaque’ on the exteriorof the property with the words “DRBHIMRAO RAMJI AMBEDKAR 1891-1956 Indian Crusader for Social Justicelived here 1921-22”.

When the house came on themarket for £3.1 million and was broughtto the attention of Ambedkarite groupsby Mr Harbans Lal Virdee at the end ofAugust 2014, Ms Santosh Dass MBE,President FABO UK immediately wroteto Mr Prithviraj Chavan, the former ChiefMinister Maharashtra with a request thatGOM fund the purchase of the houseand allow Ambedkarites to turn it into a

fitting memorial for Dr Ambedkar. Shefollowed this up with letters to PrimeMinister Narendra Modi too. Since then,Ms Dass and colleagues in Mumbai -Padma Shri Kalpana Saroj, Mr RamdasAthawale MP, Mr R K Gaikwad, IAS (For-mer Secretary GOM), Mr Ramesh Katke,D e p u t yR e g i s t ra rD e p a r t -ment ofC o o p e r a -tion, GOMh a v ew o r k e dnon-stop tosecure thehouse –particularlyin the last14 dayswhen therewas a seri-ous risk theh o u s ewould besold to aprivate developer. Mr GautamChakravarty FABO UK together with MrsSaroj also lobbied the Government ofIndia and met Mr Ajit Doval in Prime Min-ister Modi’s office on 31 December 2014and handed copies of Ms Dass’s lettersto the CM GOM and Prime MinisterModi. This coincided with Mr Chakra-vaty’s visit to India for his very success-ful World Peace Buddhist Convention inSurat, Gujarat, in January 2015 in whichover 30,000 people participated.

After months of email ex-changes, phone calls and meetings, on22 January 2015 by Ms Dass and col-leagues in India, Mr Rajkumar Badole,Minister for Social Justice and Special

companied the Minister to a meetingwith Mr Ranjan Mathai, India’s HighCommissioner to London.

In response, to Mr Tawade’s an-nouncement Ms Dass said,”I am de-lighted that the Government ofMaharashtra has begun the legal processto secure the Architect of the Constitu-tion of India - Dr Ambedkar's - formerresidence in north London. This followsmy letter to the former CM of the Gov-ernment of Maharashtra, on 1 Septem-ber 2014 and the robust lobbying since.Mr Vinod Tawade gave me this goodnews on 23 January 2015 in person atmeeting in London. I invited the Ministerto come with me and visit 10 King Hen-

rys Road NW3. Fortunately he was ableto adjust his diary and obliged just beforehe flew back to India. Straight after vis-iting the house we met India’s HighCommissioner in London where the Min-ister asked the High Commission tobegin the legal process to acquire thehouse.

I am thrilled with Mr Tawade’spublic statements that the house will beturned into a memorial to Dr Ambedkar.We have a lot of work to do still to makesure we achieve this and deliver DrAmbedkar's legacy. Just for this initiativeto get this far has already brought somany people together from across thecontinents wherever the South Asian di-aspora has reached. For untold genera-tions of people to come, 10 King Henry’sRoad will become a place of pilgrimagefor people around the globe inspired bythe fractious history of civil rights, thepotential successes of social activismand, of course, Dr Ambedkar's legacy.With this fillip, the cause can only growfrom strength to strength."

GOM’s decision to buy thehouse on 22 January - at such a criticalpoint in the sale of the House - will beremembered by Ambedkarites around theworld.

This is the biggest trib-ute to Babasaheb Dr Ambedkar, theFather of the Indian Constitution on theRepublic Day of India. This memorial canprovide a national and international cen-tre for people to visit to learn aboutAmbedkar, his life, his ideas, his achieve-ments, and his work.”

Born on January 4, 1870, Babaji would have been 145, if he were alive today.Despite the hard and tough treatment meted out,fighting the British with his bare hands; despitenumerous successful but lengthy and soul-de-stroying hunger strikes during his life long sen-tence in jails, Baba Ji came out in such highspirits that he never said no to other calls of dutyfor his motherland until he died at the ripe age of98 as a true patriot.

Be-sides the Lahore conspiracy martyrs, he has alsowritten on Chandar Shekhar Azad, Bhagwati Cha-ran Vohra and Durga Bhabhi. He has also writtenbooks on the ‘trial of Madan Lal Dhingra, thehanging of Ram Prasad Bismil and other Ghadrites.

Modestly calling himself “Munshi” of theGhadrites he constantly keeps reminding us citi-zens, our proud heritage through his brilliant find-ings/writings about the heroic history that hadbeen kept marginalized by the powers to be.
