8 INTERCHANGEABILITY
InterchangeabilityOther tube fitting manufacturers often claim that theircomponents are interchangeable with Swagelok tubefitting components.
We believe that interchanging and intermixing tubefitting components of different designs, made bydifferent manufacturers, can result in leaks and tubeslippage in a percentage of cases. We also believe thispractice can be dangerous in critical applications.
Leak-tight seals that will withstand pressure, vibration, vacuum, and temperature changes depend upon closetolerances and consistent, exacting quality control inconjunction with good design principles.
The full value we build into Swagelok tube fittings islost when components from other manufacturers areinterchanged or intermixed with ours. We believe thatany manufacturer’s fitting performs best when only thatmanufacturer’s components are used in its fittings.
We do not believe that a tube fitting made up byinterchanging and intermixing components of othermanufacturers with genuine Swagelok tube fittingcomponents will perform to the high standards ofan all-Swagelok tube fitting.
9SAFETY PRECAUTIONS
Safety Precautions■ Do not bleed the system by loosening the fitting nut
or fitting plug.
■ Do not make up and tighten fittings when the systemis pressurized.
■ Make sure that the tubing rests firmly on the shoulderof the tube fitting body before tightening the nut.
■ Use the Swagelok gap inspection gauge to ensuresufficient pull-up upon initial installation.
■ Never allow problems to go unreported.
■ Always use proper thread sealants on taperedpipe threads.
■ Do not mix materials or fitting components fromvarious manufacturers—tubing, ferrules, nuts, andfitting bodies.
■ Never turn the fitting body. Instead, hold the fittingbody and turn the nut.
■ Avoid unnecessary disassembly of unused fittings.
■ Use only long reducers in female Swagelok ports.
■ Additional tubing considerations:
1. Metal tubing material should be softer than fittingmaterial. For example, stainless steel tubingshould not be used with brass fittings.
2. When tubing and fittings are made of the samematerial, tubing must be fully annealed.
3. Always use an insert with extremely soft or pliableplastic tubing.
4. Wall thickness should always be checked againstthe fitting manufacturer’s suggested minimum andmaximum wall thickness limitations.
5. Surface finish is very important to proper sealing.Tubing with any kind of depression, scratch, raised portion, or other surface defect will bedifficult to seal, particularly in gas service.
6. Tubing that is oval and will not easily fit throughfitting nuts, ferrules, and bodies should never beforced into the fitting.
10
Installation InstructionsNote: These instructions apply to traditional fittings andfittings with the advanced back-ferrule geometry.
1. Insert tubing into theSwagelok tube fitting(Fig. 1).
2. Make sure that thetubing rests firmly onthe shoulder of the tubefitting body and that thenut is finger-tight.
3. Scribe the nut at the6 o’clock position(Fig. 2).
4. While holding fitting bodysteady, tighten the nut1 1/4 turns (see note)to the 9 o’clock position.(Fig. 3)
Note: For 1/16, 1/8,and 3/16 in.; 2, 3, and4 mm tube fittings, tightenthe nut 3/4 turn to the3 o’clock position.
Installation in High-Pressure Applicationsand High Safety-Factor Systems1. Insert tubing into the Swagelok tube fitting (Fig. 1).2. Make sure that the tubing rests firmly on the shoulder
of the tube fitting body.3. Due to the variations of tubing diameters, a common
starting point is desirable. Therefore, tighten the nutuntil the tubing will not turn by hand or move axiallyin the fitting.
4. Scribe the nut at the 6 o’clock position (Fig. 2).5. While holding fitting body steady, tighten the nut
1 1/4 turns (see note) to the 9 o’clock position (Fig. 3).
Note: For 1/16, 1/8, and 3/16 in.; 2, 3, and 4 mm tubefittings, tighten the nut 3/4 turn to the 3 o’clock position.

GaugeabilityOn initial installation, theSwagelok gap inspectiongauge assures the installer orinspector that a Swagelokfitting has been sufficientlytightened.
Position the Swagelok gapinspection gauge next to thegap between the nut andbody.
■ If the gauge will not enterthe gap, the fitting issufficiently tightened (Fig. 4).
■ If the gauge will enter thegap, additional tightening is required (Fig. 5).
Note: Swagelok gap inspection gauges, except forMS-IG-468 and MS-IG-612M, can be used with high-pressure and high safety-factor installations to assurethe installer or inspector that a fitting has beensufficiently tightened.
Reassembly InstructionsYou may disassemble and reassemble a Swageloktube fitting, port connector, cap, and plug many times.
1. Insert tubing with preswaged ferrules into the fittingbody until the front ferrule seats (Fig. 6).
2. Rotate the nut with a wrench to the previouslypulled-up position; at this point a significantincrease in resistance will be encountered.
3. Tighten slightly with a wrench (Fig. 7).
Note: Do not use the gap inspection gauge withreassembled fittings.

18 TUBING DATA
Fractional Carbon Steel TubingAllowable working pressures are calculated from an Svalue of 15 700 psi (108 200 kPa) for ASTM A179tubing at –20 to 100°F (–28 to 37°C), as listed in ASMEB31.3. Multiply carbon steel rating by 0.75 for workingpressure in accordance with ASME B31.1.
Suggested Ordering InformationHigh-quality, soft annealed seamless carbon steelhydraulic tubing ASTM A179 or equivalent. Hardness72 HRB (130 HV) or less. Tubing to be free ofscratches, suitable for bending and flaring.
Gas ServiceGases (air, hydrogen, helium, nitrogen, etc.) have verysmall molecules that can escape through even the mostminute leak path. Some surface defects on the tubingcan provide such a leak path. As tube outside diameter(OD) increases, so does the likelihood of a scratch orother surface defect interfering with proper sealing.
The most successful connection for gas service willoccur if all installation instructions are carefully followedand the heavier wall thicknesses of tubing on theaccompanying tables are selected.
A heavy wall tube resists ferrule action more than a thinwall tube, allowing the ferrules to coin out minor surfaceimperfections. A thin wall tube offers less resistance toferrule action during installation, reducing the chance ofcoining out surface defects, such as scratches. Withinthe applicable suggested allowable working pressuretable, select a tube wall thickness whose workingpressure is outside of the shaded areas.

24 TUBING DATA
Metric StainlessSteel Seamless TubingAllowable working pressures are based on equationsfrom ASME B31.3 code for EN ISO 1127 tubing (D4,T4 tolerance 3 to 12 mm; D4, T3 tolerance, 14 to50 mm), using a stress value of 1370 bar (20 000 psi)and a tensile strength of 5170 bar (75 000 psi), exceptas noted. Multiply stainless steel rating by 0.94 forworking pressure in accordance with ASME B31.1.
For Welded TubingNote: For welded and drawn tubing, a derating factormust be applied for weld integrity.
■ For double-welded tubing, multiply pressure ratingby 0.85.
■ For single-welded tubing, multiply pressure ratingby 0.80.
