The answer has been found somewhere between the two, with the result that my choice may not in all cases be equally acceptable. With one or two exceptions, no arms of the commercial families of the nineteenth century have been included. The modern grants to boroughs have been omitted, although ancient boroughs and monastic houses are included. It should be pointed out that in each case one locality only is given for each family. AN INDEX OF LANCASHIRE HERALDRY.

Contributed by R. Sharpe France, F.R.Hist.S.

THIS index has been compiled with the object of rendering assistance in the identification of the

coats - of - arms actually borne by, or attributed to, Lancashire families. But, one might well ask, what is a Lancashire family ? is it a family which throughout its known existence has been seated in the county ? If so, few would be eligible for inclusion in this list. Or is it a family which at some period in its history has been associated with Lancashire ? If so, the number would be legion.

For some even this choice is somewhat arbitrary.

A few words on how to use the index may be useful, although a short perusal will make the system clear. To identify a coat-of-arms, turn to the section relating to the principal charge, whether Bar, Bend, Canton, Chevron, Chief, Cross, Fess, Lozenge, Pale, Saltire, or Various Charges. Next, refer to the colour of the shield, and lastly find the exact description. The convention has been adopted of referring to the cross-crosslet simply as the Crosslet.

It is now generally recognized that heraldic charges were quite without significance, particularly a mystical

significance. They were simply a mark of recognition, and the only meaning which can be read into them is that which appears in certain arms usually referred to as punning or canting arms. Such are the covered-cups of the Butlers, the acorns of Ackers, the oak-leaves of Ogden, the calves of Veale, the dishes of Standish, the dung-forks or worthing-forks of Worthington, the storks of Starkie and the boars' heads of Birley and Barton.

It must be made clear that this is simply an index to Lancashire heraldry. The inclusion of a coat-of-arms is no indication of its authenticity. If a coat has been attributed to a family it is included. The sources are the Victoria County History, the Visitations as published by the Chatham Society, Burke's General Armory, and a number of local histories. A critical account of the heraldry of Lancashire is yet to be written.
