AN ICON OF HOPE AND HEALING

l e a der shipDON SH I LTON, P RES I DENT, ST. M ARY ’ S GENERAL HOSP ITAL

Nearly 90 years ago, our founders the Sisters of St. Joseph of Hamilton along with a handful of local physicians laid down what is the foundation of St. Mary’s General Hospital. They laid it with vision, compassion, tenacity and a belief in the dignity that comes with serving the sick.

Today I continue to marvel at their determination to make something out of nothing on a small piece of property on the outskirts of downtown Kitchener. I am reminded often that our hospital, and the legacy it represents, has become an iconic symbol of hope and healing atop Queen’s Boulevard. As you go about living your everyday lives, take comfort in knowing we will be there when you need us most.

While we have evolved from a general hospital that performed more baby deliveries than surgeries to the highly specialized centre of excellence in clinical care and patient safety we are today, we have never forgotten our roots and our legacy.

That legacy is bound with the stories of our patients and the people of this community who have generously supported our work from day one. The hospital itself was built entirely with donated funds and today we count on your support just as much as we did in 1924.

What’s next for St. Mary’s? As we celebrate 10 years of cardiac excellence providing nationally recognized care for cardiac patients from Waterloo-Wellington and beyond, we will continue to foster quality, and lead and respond to the growing needs for cardiac and respiratory care in the community. The needs of cardiac patients will be supported by the addition of a new arrhythmia unit, and

with the demand for respiratory care having increased exponentially, we will be doubling the size of our regional respirology service. In addition, as our patients grow older, we’re going to make our building more elder friendly. In order to achieve this and continue to support the needs of our patients, we will once again ask for your support.

In this annual report, we share with you just a few examples of how the generosity of our donors has a direct impact on our ability to meet the needs of the community and how we are doing all we can to make sure we continue to do so with innovation, compassion and respect for the whole person. That has always been the hallmark of St. Mary’s.

On behalf of everyone at St. Mary’s, thank you for your continued support of our mission.

Sincerely,

Don Shilton President, St. Mary’s General Hospital

Hellen Jarman, a geriatric nurse practitioner, sees it every day and she knows these patients would be better served in a specialized clinic or even in their own homes.

Today she can provide both. With a transformational gift of $1 million from a local family, the geriatric team at St. Mary’s is providing a unique model of care that is not only making a difference for our elderly patients but is attracting attention from other communities across Ontario.

By providing stable funding for additional nursing care, the Geriatric Nurse Practitioner Community Outreach Program allows our specially trained nurses to not only provide dedicated consultations to patients in our emergency department but to also schedule follow-up clinic visits, home visits and even regular wellness clinics at three local retirement homes.

This unique pilot program allows our nurse practitioners to coordinate care with our team of geriatric physicians, emergency physicians and family physicians to ensure that some of our most vulnerable patients get the treatment they need, when they need it and where they need it. The end result is a more coordinated approach to complex medical conditions, a reduction in costly hospital admissions and the avoidance of emergency room visits altogether. In the last six

months alone, the program has provided over 30 geriatric consultations in our hospital, 174 home visits, 8 community wellness clinics, and avoided 94 emergency department visits and hospital admissions, saving the hospital nearly $200,000.

In addition to providing financial support for this geriatric program, this donation also includes funding for two of our nurse practitioners to continue their post-graduate training in Advanced Practice Nursing for Geriatrics. In an environment of reduced government funding for hospital programs, both of these investments would have been impossible without this remarkable philanthropic gesture.

As St. Mary’s continues to provide care to one of the most elderly patient populations of any hospital in Ontario, we believe we have a responsibility to make sure we are doing everything we can to provide that care with dignity and respect. Providing as much of it as possible in an appropriate environment is just the beginning and we are grateful for the gift that got it started. That a local family would invest $1 million to take a pilot project to the next level is a testament to their belief that St. Mary’s can play a vital role in increasing support for the elderly in our community. With their financial support, we’re taking a good idea and making it extraordinary.

When things go wrong, frail elderly patients with multiple health concerns often turn to the emergency department at St. Mary’s for treatment.

In June of 2012, Waterloo welcomed the world to the inaugural Manulife Financial LPGA Classic at Grey Silo golf course.

The community responded as 66,000 guests attended the four-day tournament making it the highest-attended event on the LPGA tour in 2012.

As the official charity partner for the Manulife Classic, St. Mary’s is fortunate to be a key partner in an international sporting event and we’re intent on taking advantage of the opportunity it provides. In addition to raising $250,000 for our cardiac program, the event provided us an opportunity to share the stage with two other world-class organizations in the LPGA and Manulife Financial and to share our message with our community and beyond.

Since 2001, Manulife Financial has been the largest corporate supporter of the St. Mary’s Regional Cardiac Care Centre. Through direct corporate giving and the annual Bike & Hike for Heart, Manulife is responsible for more than $3 million in direct financial support of our cardiac program. With their incredible financial support, we have built one of Canada’s leading heart centres by attracting the best physicians and clinical staff to St. Mary’s and achieving the best outcomes for our patients.

Proceeds from the Manulife Classic in 2012 were used to wrap up our campaign to purchase a new cardiac catheterization camera that allows our cardiologists to diagnose and treat advanced heart disease. Tournament winner Brittany Lang visited St. Mary’s to tour our cardiac centre and spend some time with Dr. Heather Warren to see first hand how important this new technology is to our team and our patients. She also spent time learning about the importance of early detection and how education can lead to fewer women developing heart disease.

The LPGA is not only a tremendous tourist and economic boom to the community, it also provides St. Mary’s with an opportunity to tell our story and educate the community on the importance of healthy active living. We are privileged to be a major part of this event and are honoured that our friends at Manulife Financial enhanced their relationship with St. Mary’s by choosing our hospital as the official charity partner.

Ann Wilkinson never saw it coming. A former nurse with a healthy, active lifestyle, she never thought a heart attack was something she had to worry about.

In fact, when it happened after a swim at a local recreation centre, she dismissed the dizziness as another bout of the vertigo she’d been dealing with for years. Looking back, she is grateful her friends and staff at the pool didn’t hesitate to call 911.

Ten minutes later, she was in an ambulance and 15 minutes after that she was in our catheterization lab at St. Mary’s. The speed with which she was transported and treated is a testament to the partnership between the cardiac team at St. Mary’s and the paramedics of Waterloo Region. They activated a ‘Code STEMI’ from the poolside and bypassed our emergency department altogether, accessing the cath lab directly where the emergency response team was waiting for her arrival. For patients like Ann who are treated under a ‘Code STEMI’, the speed with which our cardiac team responds not only saves their life, but gives them the best shot at recuperation by limiting the amount of muscle damage caused by a heart attack.

Today Ann is not only recuperating, she’s thriving thanks to our team at the St. Mary’s Cardiac Rehabilitation Centre.

With the help of our staff, Ann is working hard to regain her strength and stamina while also working through the self-described “shell shock” of having a heart attack in the first place. The centre provides a safe environment for our patients in the aftermath of such a life threatening event. Our mission is to care for the whole person – mind, body and spirit – to give them the best chance to recover and go on leading healthy productive lives. For Ann, that means more quality time with her husband, two children and four grandchildren.

Ann and her family found out what many people don’t know – that heart disease is highly prevalent in women and sadly, is the number one cause of death of women in Canada. At St. Mary’s, our primary job is to treat our patients when they need us most but we also feel it is our responsibility to educate our community about the realities of heart disease and the frequency with which it affects women. We’re asking everyone to learn about the prevalence of women’s heart disease and to tell the women they love to keep their hearts healthy and safe.

Grace gave her first gift to St. Mary’s in 1990. She can’t recall exactly what it was for, but knows why she did it.

“ St. Mary’s was a special place that helped people when they needed it most so we gave what we could,” she recalled.

Many years later, she learned first-hand how special the people at St. Mary’s can be when a loved one needed our help. While Grace’s late husband, Clarence, was dealing with respiratory failure, he spent a great deal of time in the clinic of Dr. Jon Langridge. “He and his team took so much time to make sure Clar had the best quality of life possible,” she recalls. “I always felt that everybody at St. Mary’s treated us both with great dignity, and for that, I will always be grateful.”

Now at age 90, Grace remains an annual donor to St. Mary’s and is one of our hospital’s most ardent supporters, attending events when she can. Three years ago she chose to make the ultimate gift to St. Mary’s by naming our Foundation as a beneficiary in her will. As a member of our Cornerstone Society, she joins nearly 150 other donors who have remembered St. Mary’s in their estate plans and count on us to continue our mission of excellence and compassion. For Grace, membership in the Cornerstone

Society also provides her with the opportunity to stay current with happenings at St. Mary’s by attending events and through updates with Foundation staff.

“Clar and I were fortunate to have enough resources to take care of ourselves,” she says. “And we always made it a priority to support the charities we believed in. When I think about our legacy, I can’t think of a better way to honour the way we have lived our lives than to leave gift to St. Mary’s. Knowing that we will continue to support such a wonderful place after we’re gone provides me a great sense of peace.”

At St. Mary’s, we are always most humbled by the generosity of those who leave a gift in their will to ensure we have the resources to carry on our work. Knowing that our Cornerstone Members believe in us and have faith in our mission is the ultimate act of philanthropy. For someone like Grace to honour us in such a manner is inspiring.

Thank you Grace.
