COURSE OBJECTIVE

Livestock plays an important role in the rural economy and also an additional source of

income for the livestock owners. There is a chronic shortage of feed and fodder in the

country causing poor growth and production of the livestock. The diversion of agricultural

by-products towards industry, which primarily were used as animal feed leads further

shortage, challenging the livestock production. The partial utilization of the nutrients by the

livestock is also responsible for higher cost of production. Due to the malnourishment,

livestock are suffering from poor health and production. Therefore, it is necessary to reduce

the gap between demand and supply of animal feed and fodder. Improving feed utilization

by the animals is one of the feasible strategy to reduce the cost of production as the feed is

the only single entity which constitute the major cost for livestock production. Many recent

nutritional interventions have been come up to improve nutrients utilization from poor

quality feed and fodder resulting better production efficiency in terms of milk, meat, eggs

etc. Looking at the present scenario, present course has been designed to share the

advanced knowledge on recent approaches of animal feeding and nutrition for better

livestock production and health with the researchers, teachers and extension workers of

NARES of the country.

COURSE DESCRIPTION

The course will cover lectures delivered by the scientists of the institute and invited experts from other organizations. A practical training in latest techniques will be imparted to the participants. The short course will be aimed mainly at improved and sustainable livestock production. The broad areas of the course will be as follows:

Livestock feed resources and its improvement for nutrients availability Advanced technology in animal nutrition research Rumen fermentation and its manipulation for improved livestock productivity Hands on training on important techniques used in animal nutrition and rumen manipulation

Each participant will be required to give a brief presentation highlighting his or her activities in their parent organization and provide feedback on the course.

COURSE LOCATION

The course will be held at the Centre of Advanced Faculty Training in Animal Nutrition, ICAR-Indian Veterinary Research Institute, Izatnagar. Established in 1921, the Animal Nutrition Division of the institute has been the torch bearer for scientific and human resource development in the areas of Animal Nutrition and feed science in the country. In the process, it has evolved into a premier seat of learning and recognized as Centre of Advanced Studies in Animal Nutrition by the Indian Council of Agricultural Research in 1995 with a mandate for human resource development in the frontier areas of Animal Nutrition to train scientists and teachers of National Agricultural Research System, which

has subsequently been rechristened as Centre of Advanced Faculty Training since 2009. The proposed course is the 48th course in the series of short courses organized successfully so far by this centre.

Upstream reproductive technologies for augmentation of livestock production

INTRODUCTION Reproductive failure is most costly and limiting factor for the success of livestock industry. Reproductive technologies offer opportunity for enhancing the production potential of livestock. Last three decades have witnessed significant advances in the area of upstream reproductive biotechniques as well as in genomics. Training which are expensive yet crucial for the human resource development in such areas is the current requirement. This short course aims to share the developments of such technologies developed through constant research efforts could also be used commercially. This 21 days short course is aimed for the academic and scientific capacity building of NARES faculty. ELIGIBILITY Participants having master's degree in animal physiology, animal nutrition, animal reproduction, animal biotechnology, animal biochemistry, veterinary pharmacology, veterinary medicine, veterinary surgery, LPM and allied discipline of animal sciences; working not below the rank of Assistant Professor and equiva-lent in the concerned subject under State Agricultural University /I.C.A.R. Institutes are eligible for this course. CAFT IN VETERINARY PHYSIOLOGY Division of Physiology, Pharmacology & Biochemistry was formally established in 1970. Later on Division of Pharmacology & Toxicology as well as Biochemistry was separated and the existing Division was renamed as Division of Physiology and Climatology. On the basis of achievements in Animal Physiology research and teaching, ICAR granted the status of Centre of Advanced Studies in Veterinary Physiology to this division in 1995. The centre is having the responsibility of teaching and research with a mandate of training scientists and teachers of Universities and

Research Institute. The Centre of Advanced Studies (CAS) was renamed as Centre of Advanced Faculty Training (CAFT) by the Council in the year 2010. INSTITUTE The ICAR-Indian Veterinary Research Insti-tute is one of the premier research institutions of South East Asia, dedicated to livestock research and development in India. The Institute was established in the year 1889 and has rendered services as National Institute for more than 1268 years to the country. In 1983, IVRI was accorded the status of Deemed to be University by UGC for the award of M.V. Sc. and Ph.D. degree. It is situated 8 Km north of Bareilly city, at Izatnagar, a satellite town of Bareilly. IVRI is just 1 Km from Izatnagar railway station. The weather of Bareilly during the month of September remains hot & humid (Morning 20 0C and day temperature about 34-35 0C).
