Recent Arrivals… Seriously?

Yeah, we’re serious! RCycles is an initiative of the Office of the President, RCSustain, and Fintel Library that pro-vides the free use of bicycles to the Roanoke College campus community.

How does it work?

It's simple. Come to the Lending Services desk in Fintel Library during regular operating hours, ask for a bike, present your RCID card, sign an RCycles Release form, and you will receive a key to the lock of one of five bikes that are parked in front of Fintel Library. You may also check out a helmet at the same time. You can keep the bike for seven ( 7) days. After seven days, lock the bike back in the rack and return the key and helmet.

Who can participate?

RCycles is a service available only to Roanoke College students, faculty, and staff.

PsycInfo and PsycArticles – A new interface we’re pleased to present! PsycInfo and PsycArticles are essential tools for researchers and include articles from the 1600s and 1700s. Are you listening, History of Psychology students? PsycINFO contains bibliographic ci-tations, abstracts, cited references, and descriptive information to help you find what you need across a wide variety of scholarly publications in the behavioral and social sciences. PsycInfo in-cludes many links to full text and PsycArticles is entirely full text – very convenient for students in a hurry! The interface is new this fall so the screen will look differently from last year. You can still search using all your favorite limiters such as peer reviewed, date range, keyword or thesaurus terms, and full text. Ask a reference librarian for assistance or call 540 375 2295 or email rheller@roanoke.edu or stop by the reference desk.

Ever tried using an online subject encyclopedia? If not, give them a try! Here’s what they of-fer:

Great ideas on topics for research projects Overviews of articles with lots of subtopics Summaries of important studies Descriptions of important researchers Bibliographies of additional resources

The following three titles are accessible through the library catalog by conducting a title search and linking through to the full content.

Encyclopedia of Gender and Society - online This resource provides fascinating articles ranging in subject from ―lookism‖ to ―beauty pageants‖ to ―microlending‖ and it includes arti-cles on numerous people including Indira Gandhi, Havelock Ellis, and Mollie Orshansky. Each article includes a bibliography of additional sources and links to related articles within the encyclopedia.

Encyclopedia of Latin American History and Culture - online Provides a comprehensive, multidisciplinary view of Latin American his-tory and culture from prehistoric times to present. Covers cultural issues and includes numerous biographical profiles of important figures in poli-tics, letters and the arts.

Encyclopedia of United States Indian Policy and Law - online Did you know that the Pamunkey and Mattaponi are two of the oldest tribes in the United States? Or that In 1691 marriage between Indians and whites was outlawed? Or that as recently as 2008, there were six tribes in Virginia still pursuing official federal recognition? The article on Virginia’s Indian policy discusses these topics. This Encyclopedia reveals a fascinating history of the many twists and turns of the ―white man‖ and the ―native American‖ attempting to live together.

Used to take short walks around the li-brary’s dome (naughty, so please don’t follow this person’s example!). Also met future spouse when five years old.

Patty Powell

Was a contestant on a national game show. Also met Dick Clark while he was filming a Captain and Tennille special .

Dave Wiseman

Ushered Senator Ted Kennedy and his son to their box seats in the Concert Hall at the John F. Kennedy Center in Washington, D.C. Also experienced a 7.1 earthquake and lived to tell about it.

Linda Miller

Once helped a friend move from Atlanta to New York City in a single weekend and squeezed in a trip to the Schubert Theater on Broadway to see ―A Chorus Line‖ before driving back to Atlanta.

Hany Hosny

Formerly a professional dry-wall hanger. Is a triathlete and has run a successful marathon.

Sara Blaha

Is the sibling of the head track Coach at The University of Pennsylvania. Also took part in snowball fight on 4th of July. Real snow!

Stan Umberger

Was a student assistant in her high school library. Also, her husband posted $300 bond in Nashville, NC so that she wouldn’t be locked up for a speeding ticket.

Judy Gearing

Once drove 15 miles in broad daylight

wearing only underwear and socks. Also

very close to publishing a coffee table

book on life in the Bolivian Andes.

Jeffrey Martin

Was a girl Scout leader of a junior troop in East and Spanish Harlem. Also Shook hands with Lawrence Welk curbside at LAX, while he was removing his golf clubs from the trunk of his car.
