4London’s West End boasts the largest shopping district in Europe, numerous upscale bars, restaurants, hotels, and nightclubs, and iconic attractions such as Covent Garden, Notting Hill, Knightsbridge, Trafalgar Square, Marble Arch, and Piccadilly Circus. But one of its biggest attractions is the theatre district, home to approximately 40 venues presenting some of the highest-quality commercial theatre in the English-speaking world. You and a guest will be at the center of it all with VIP tickets to two shows—An American in Paris, now on its world tour, and King Lear at Shakespeare’s Globe.

And London’s not just about theatre—it’s about history as well. Take a private tour of the Churchill War Rooms at the Imperial War Museum, where you’ll discover the complex that was at the center of Britain’s war effort.

Experience a quintessential English tradition as you debrief about your theatre and museum outings over afternoon tea at the Covent Garden Hotel. You’ll also enjoy dinner at the exclusive, members-only Club at the Ivy, a fresh and imaginative Art Deco oasis in the heart of the West End.

While in London, you’ll enjoy a five night stay at The Langham, a luxury hotel which has enchanted royalty, dignitaries, celebrities, and discerning guests for over 150 years. Located in the heart of the West End’s theatre district, this historic landmark originally opened in 1865 as the first luxury hotel in London. With a history of delighting guests and providing personalized service, the hotel is a true London icon. With the recent addition of new deluxe suites and the forthcoming launch of a new luxury tavern and spa, the reimagining of Europe’s first Grand Hotel is ever-evolving.

Feed your body and your theatre habit in the heart of London’s storied West End!

In 2018, you and a guest can join the festivities, party with the glitterati, and perhaps toast the success of other Berkeley Rep alums such as playwright Tarell Alvin McCraney, whose Moonlight won Best Picture in 2017, after a now-infamous Oscar® night snafu.

8Your journey begins in Kolkata, India’s cultural, artistic, and intellectual hub. Enjoy a stay at the historic Taj Bengal Kolkata and tour this strikingly modern city filled with architectural reminders of British India and the country’s colonial past, before embarking on RV Bengal Ganga, your home for the next seven days. Cruise to Kalna, where you’ll discover why it’s known as the “City of Temples.” Your next stop is Matiari, where you’ll observe a traditional “production line” in which brass items created in a primitive forge are circulated to specialists throughout the village for polishing and engraving. On your way to Murshidabad, you’ll pass Plassey, site of the famous 1757 battle that turned the tide of Indian history and began the spread of the British East India Company’s rule over much of South Asia for the next 190 years. In Murshidabad, you’ll ride a tonga (horse cart) to visit the town’s oldest mosque and the Hazarduari Palace, former home to nawabs (rulers) and now a museum housing their priceless collections of paintings, weapons, and antiques. Moor for the night in Jangipur, then continue through the historic Farakka Barrage, which regulates the Ganges’ flow into Bangladesh and India. You’ll moor again at Samtaghat, and then continue to Bateshwarsthan, where you’ll tour the ruins of Vikramshila University, established in the ninth century as an important center of Buddhist learning. Next, cruise to Sultanganj, an important pilgrimage site striking for its two large granite boulders, one crowned by a mosque and the other by a 16th-century temple. You’ll pass through the Viramshila Ganganetic Dolphin sanctuary, home to numerous endangered species and an astounding variety of migratory and resident birds, before your last stop in Munger, where rickshaws will take you to the Bihar School of Yoga inside the 15th-century Munger Fort.

On leaving the ship, you’ll journey overland to Bodhgaya, a major Buddhist pilgrimage site where Prince Siddhartha attained enlightenment beneath the bodhi tree, before continuing on to tour fascinating Varanasi, where Hindu pilgrims come to the ghats to cleanse their sins in Mother Ganga and cremate their loved ones. From Varanasi, fly to chaotic, colorful New Delhi, site of the original hit film Monsoon Wedding, where you’ll spend two nights at the iconic Taj Mahal Hotel in the diplomatic enclave. You’ll have three nights to recover from your epic Indian adventure at The Gateway Resort Damdama Lake, Gurgaon, located less than 30 miles from New Delhi’s Indira Gandhi International Airport. You can unplug and unwind at the Spa, bask in the crystal waters of the pool, or stroll through lush acres of greenery accompanied by a symphony of birdsong before you fly home.

9Just last week, Berkeley Rep announced its 2017–18 season—and among the plays will be the world premiere of Daniel Handler’s Imaginary Comforts, or The Story of the Ghost of the Dead Rabbit, a warm, wise, and witty new play for adults. Known for his wicked pen, Daniel (a.k.a. Lemony Snicket) is the best-selling author of the darkly comic collection A Series of Unfortunate Events, among many other books for children, and he has published several books for adults under his own name, including We Are Pirates. His wife, Lisa Brown, is an illustrator and author whose books include Picture the Dead, How to Be, Vampire Boy’s Goodnight, and the award-winning Baby Be of Use series of (ahem!) handbooks to modern parenting.

Together, the pair make for clever company. Both enjoy a good cocktail, and so you and your party are cordially invited to raise a glass with them—or several!—in the elegant Tony Bennett Suite at the Fairmont San Francisco. Be sure to ask Daniel for his recipe for a Jewish Manhattan, and don’t be surprised if it includes Manischewitz.

10There are only a few ways to experience The World, the largest privately owned residential yacht on earth: as an owner of one of its private residences, as an invited guest, or as the winning bidder of this exceptional lot. This is your chance to savor the trip of a lifetime on a one-of-a-kind ship.

Two couples, or a family of four, will enjoy 13 days aboard The World as it journeys from Barcelona to Genoa along the coasts of Spain, France, and Italy from April 23–May 5, 2018. On this exclusive voyage you’ll be joining the yacht’s residents, who share your taste for adventure and unrivaled personalized service and amenities. Your elegant home on this 165-residence “floating luxury city” is a spacious two-bedroom apartment, beautifully appointed and fully furnished, with an expansive balcony on which to relax and watch the world go by.

Even if you have visited this part of the world before, as a guest on The World you can experience its richness—culturally, historically, and gastronomically—in a luxury setting that far exceeds the comfort of home. You’ll unpack your suitcase only once, and then travel with ease, stopping at fascinating ports of call like the beguilingly gritty port town of Marseille, Villefranche-sur-Mer (arguably the most charming authentic niçoise fishing village on the Côte D’Azur), and Genoa, with all its grandeur, squalor, and historical fascination.

The World’s discreet personalized service surpasses that of a well-staffed estate. An extensive range of onboard activities are available, like playing a few sets on the only full-size tennis court at sea; practicing your swing on the world’s greatest courses with a state-of-the-art golf simulator, along with tips from the Ship’s pro; or joining a yoga class on deck. Those seeking more peaceful pursuits can choose from the library’s 4,000 books, indulge at The World Spa & Wellness Center, watch first-run movies, listen to lecturers in the theatre, or shoot pool on a self-stabilizing, gyroscopic billiard table. You can bring back delicacies from local markets to cook at home, or enjoy world-class dining at one of six restaurants on board. Have a special occasion or are in the mood for a romantic evening? For a unique and truly personalized dining option, The World’s Call-a-Chef™ program will send a chef to your residence to prepare a delicious meal.

An average of three days in port offers a leisurely pace to explore every stop. And don’t forget, The World Concierge is always available to help you arrange private excursions and ensure that you experience the best each port of call has to offer. See Southern Europe as you’ve never imagined it before. Welcome aboard The World.

Three-night stay at Palisades Vineyard, with tours and celebratory winemaker dinner

11Berkeley Rep Trustee Felicia Woytak and her husband Steve Rasmussen welcome you and up to five friends for a wine lover’s weekend at their historic Palisades Vineyard in Calistoga.

Palisades Vineyard is a little bit of heaven tucked into a narrow canyon at the foot of the magnificent Palisades cliffs in the Napa Valley just east of the town of Calistoga. Bisected by the occasionally torrential Horns Creek, Palisades Vineyard’s cobbly loam soil is perfectly suited for growing the great Rhone and Bordeaux varietals. Hot summers, cool morning westerly breezes, extended sunlight, and abundant winter rainfall combine to bless the vineyard’s Petite Sirah and Petit Verdot grapes with exceptional concentration, character, and depth. All of their Petite Sirah vines date from 1968 and the early 1970s and are dry-farmed and head-trained in the “old-world” style characteristic of Napa Valley’s heritage vineyards.

Felicia and Steve will give you an up-close-and-personal tour of their working vineyard and share with you their love of the grape. You can hike the miles of trails around the property or just relax poolside, steps away from your guesthouse. But the highlight of your weekend will be a spectacular, celebratory winemaker dinner on the property with Joel Peterson, founder of Ravenswood Winery and winemaker for over 30 years. Just last year, Joel started a new venture called Once and Future Wines, which, in addition to several other fabulous wines, produces a vineyard designate Petite Sirah from Palisades Vineyard. Joel is among a highly select group of winemakers who source their grapes from Palisades Vineyard. You’ll have a unique opportunity to taste the fruits of the labors of Felicia, Steve, and Joel right on the property.

It promises to be a spectacular weekend, with great food, wine, and friends!
