WELCOME TO AMUG 2019F O R U S E R S , B Y U S E R S —
I’d like to extend a great big WELCOME to all of you that are joining us for the first time, as well as those that are back for your 2nd, 3rd, 10th, or even 31st time. It’s hard to believe we celebrated our 30th anniversary last year, and while 31 isn’t a milestone, it’s another example of how long, yet how short, the additive manufacturing (AM) industry has been around. It is an example that reminds us how far we have come, yet how far we still have to go.
It’s amazing when I think of how long some of us have been in the industry, and yet, there are so many people finding this incredible technology for the first time. From the beginning, the AMUG organization has, in one form or another, been active in supporting the AM industry as it grows and evolves. AMUG continues to support the seasoned veterans and the newly initiated.
AMUG started out as a small group of the first users of rapid prototyping machines. The desire of the group was to figure out how these machines could be fine-tuned to making parts. Initially, members were happy with just good parts, but that eventually transitioned to great, end-use parts. What started out as a three-company industry and a handful of users has grown (and continues to grow), bringing new companies, new technologies, and new users to the AM world. What began as mostly a plastics-focused industry has expanded to metals, composites and ceramics, with applications that we have yet to fully realize.
AMUG has been a part of the industry growth, acting as a forum to educate, train and support users worldwide. The core principle of this group is to advance additive manufacturing with education. Working side by side with OEMs, the users of the AM technologies get together once a year to share their experiences, exchange ideas and learn new tips and tricks. It is unlike any other additive manufacturing and 3D printing event. With the learning, seeing new technology, meeting OEMs and vendors one on one, networking and engaging at events, the AMUG Conference is a core part of being successful in the AM industry. And through these interactions, AMUG becomes family; AMUG becomes home.
NEW TRAINING LAB Training is the reason I first joined the user group. Like many of you, I needed to learn more about how this all works and how to leverage the technology in my organization. I have always attended as many presentations as I could, built my network from everyone I met, and took what I learned from the user group to make me a better user of the technology. With the expansion of technologies, many of us now have multiple AM solutions, which makes training a bit more challenging. Knowing this, AMUG developed another way to further support your opportunities to learn. I am pleased to announce the creation of the AMUG Training Lab. Designed to bring back the under-the-hood philosophy of the early user group gatherings, AMUG and the Diamond Sponsors have designed a new Training Lab concept to provide instructional sessions that will connect beginner, intermediate and advanced users to the technology in a hands-on manner.
GROWTH For 31 years, AMUG has been run by a small team of unpaid volunteers. The industry growth leads to growth in the size of the conference, which is great. Yet, growth demands an expansion of the AMUG team. I encourage you to look at the growing number of ways to contribute to AMUG’s continued success. The management team is enlarging and the number of committees is growing. Please consider what role you could play and how you can join us during, before or after the annual conference. You can contribute in many ways: be on a committee, hold a position on the management team, work the registration desk, or stuff swag bags. No matter how much time you can offer, there is a place for you. Not only do you become part
of building a better user group, I can guarantee you will meet great people and make new friends. Simply put, it is rewarding.
THE FUTURE My time as your president is coming to an end. You will have a new president on July 1. My parting thought; my last bit of insight to share is a simple statement: Have fun. Have fun at this conference; have fun in this industry. Enjoy your work in the AM field—it’s like no other. Even though we are in our 31st year, there is plenty left to do and each of us has a role to fill. AM needs teachers and influencers to assist those entering into this amazing industry. Embrace this role and love it. AMUG is a special community that so many people have worked hard to build. I can’t wait to see what the AM industry has in store for us, and I can’t wait to be back together with my AM family for the 31st AMUG Conference.
Keep pushing the boundaries. Have fun. Enjoy spending time with your AMUG family.
Paul Bates2018-2019 AMUG President

WHO ARE WEW H A T A M U G M E A N S
AMUG MISSION
Additive Manufacturing Users Group (AMUG) educates and advances the uses and applications of additive manufacturing technologies. The cornerstone of AMUG is the annual Education & Training Conference. AMUG members meet annually to share information, tips and tricks on additive manufacturing processes, applications, materials, ancillary equipment, and industry trends.
EXPERIENCE
To call the AMUG event a conference is an understatement. It is a unique gathering of AM users, of all levels, that assemble and band together to provide and share valuable insights and experiences to help one another.
PHILOSOPHY
“For users, by users” is both AMUG’s philosophy and its guiding principle. Every presentation, workshop, sponsor and exhibitor passes through one simple filter: does it provide value to AM users? That is the crux of “For Users.” We then turn to users to provide the content and count on them to make the conference valuable, memorable and unique. That is the “By Users” component.
AMUG creates the sharing environment; users create the experience.
Look for a DINO
Look for a DINO on the badge and say Hello! DINOs are members of AMUG that have been recognized for their tenure and sevice to AMUG.
They are here to help you and introduce you to others.
FIRST TIME ATTENDEESW E L C O M E T O A M U G —
Welcome First Time Attendees! The AMUG Conference was developed as a way for you, the user of professional additive manufacturing technology, to share ideas, information and knowledge with your fellow colleagues.
We have all been in your position as a first-time attendee. Don’t be shy. Don’t be afraid to dive right in and get involved as part of the team. The more involved you get during the conference, the more value you will take away.
Along with access to the AMUG Board, AMUG Global Ambassadors, and AMUG Liaisons, you will see individuals with a dinosaur on their name tag. These individuals are known as DINOs (Distinguished INnovative Operators). Take time to introduce yourself to these individuals. DINOs have been recognized as leaders in the Additive Manufacturing industry. Pick their brains, take advantage of their knowledge.
We look forward to meeting you, and please feel free to seek us out with any questions and concerns.
Have a great conference!
If you need any assistance while you are at the AMUG Conference, come find me or connect with me through our mobile app.

SCHOLARSHIP RECIPIENTSB U I L D I N G T H E F U T U R E O F A M —
Victoria Sears is a graduate student majoring in bioengineering at the University of Michigan (UM) with plans to graduate December 2019. While attending UM, Victoria has been a lab instructor and a research assistant for her bioengineering professor. Her graduate research is focused on developing a bioink for additive manufacturing (AM). This bioink is a hybrid polymer that is printed as a scaffold that is then integrated with extracellular matrices to enhance tissue repair. Victoria’s goal is to optimize the bioprintability of such bioink and study the resulting regenerative properties.
During her educational journey, Victoria has been recognized by the National Society of Leadership and Success, been recognized as a James B. Angell Scholar at UM; and has been on UM’s Dean’s List throughout her entire undergraduate years.
Victoria first developed a passion for AM through internships. Working in AM research and development at 3D Systems and Ford Motor Company, she acquired firsthand experience with several AM processes; compounded her own filaments; and developed post processing techniques to improve color and surface finish of power-bed-fusion parts. Victoria also became actively involved in the AM community during her internship at SME where she supported the Medical Additive Manufacturing/3D Printing Work Group, developing AM public informational databases and coordinating displays for SME’s RAPID+TCT Expo.
The Guy E. Bourdeau Scholarship—founded by Guy’s wife, Renee Bourdeau, andfinancially supported by Cimquest, Inc.—is awarded annually to one college student.

Advanced FinishingPRAETORIAN GUARD HELMETAndrew Sliwa, Custom Prototypes
Andrew Sliwa’s winning entry in the Advanced Finishing category was a stunning recreation of a Praetorian Guard helmet that, according to legend, Cleopatra gave to Mark Antony. Lost to time, Sliwa’s team built on research to create a digital model that fueled metal and polymer additive manufacturing processes. The metal pieces were painstakingly polished and plated in copper, nickel and gold. The jewels, which were printed in clear photopolymer, were dyed and painted to present the grains of precious stones. Showing prowess in additive manufacturing, as well as finishing, Custom Prototypes printed each individual strand of the helmet’s crest and then dyed, plasticized and coated the plume before shaping it with hot air.

OLD WORLD ENGINEERING GETS AN ADDITIVE MAKEOVEREd Graham, ProtoCam
Ed Graham’s winning entry in the Advanced Concepts category was titled “Old world engineering gets an additive makeover.” That makeover solved a decade-old problem for Langhorne Carpets, which could not acquire replacements for the carpet loom drive assembly from circa-1930s machines. Graham’s team applied DFAM (design for additive manufacturing) practices to reduce weight and replicate 1,000 pilot holes while creating a modular assembly that allows replacement of individual components. The five-piece assemblies were then printed with HP’s Multi Jet Fusion and put into service.

DINO
The Distinguished INnovator Operator (DINO) Award recognizes individuals for both their contributions and years of service within the additive manufacturing industry and within the AMUG efforts. Each year, the selection committee reviews the list of conference registrants and selects DINOs based on factors such as:
• Contributions to the AM industry worldwide• Contributions to AMUG (e.g., speaker, volunteer)• Years of hands-on work with an AM technology• Willingness to share and assist• Skill level• And other subjective factors
These criteria makes the DINO Award very prestigious.

3D Systems North American Stereolithography Users GroupFounded in the late 1980s, the users group was dedicated to the users of 3D Systems’ stereolithography technology.
1980s
AMUG has grown, expanded and evolved to keep pace with the sweeping changes in the additive manufacturing industry. The users group has been hard at work since 1988 as a volunteer organization working with OEMs to design a community focused on advancing the uses of additive manufacturing technology.
The Additive Manufacturing Users Group’s origins date back to the late 1980’s when the founding industry users group was called 3D Systems North American Stereolithography Users Group, a users group solely focused on the advancement of stereolithography (SL) use with the owners and operators of 3D Systems’ equipment. Today, AMUG educates and supports users of all additive manufacturing technologies. The primary charter of the group remains the same, but its members are much more diversified, global and focused in advancing additive manufacturing technology for rapid manufacturing and prototyping.
With AMUG’s expanded range, operators/owners of any commercial technology — stereolithography (SL), selective laser sintering (SLS), 3D printing, CLIP, DMD, DMLM, DMLS, EBM, FDM, LC, LS, MJP, PolyJet, SLM, and more — can benefit from the information exchange and professional network that AMUG offers.
Objectives + Encourage effective communication of information amongst all additive manufacturing equipment owners and operators.
+ Provide a forum for presentations and the ability to network with colleagues.
+ Propose solutions to problems that involve basic modification to hardware or software.
+ Provide an open atmosphere for technology exchange.
Activities + Hold annual and periodic meetings for the purpose of conducting business of AMUG.
+ Establish special task or interest groups to study specific mutual areas of interest.
+ Identify problems and propose solutions or improvements and recommend uniform practices and techniques to be used by the membership.
Selective Laser Sintering Users GroupThis group, founded in the early 1990s, focused on the users of DTM Corporation’s selective laser sintering technology.
1990s
3D Systems Users GroupIn 2001, 3D Systems acquired DTM Corporation. Shortly after, the users groups for stereolithography and selective laser sintering consolidated into one association.
2001
Additive Manufacturing Users GroupAt the 2011 conference, members voted to open the users group to owners/operators of all commercial additive manufacturing technologies. Objet and Stratasys joined as premier supporters of AMUG.
2011
AMUG Celebrates 30 years of CommunityThroughout the years, AMUG has grown from a small gathering of 12 individuals with a common cause to a global community with a common cause: A community that is pushing forward a passion for technology that inspires, redefines and empowers people every day, and that is changing manufacturing as we know it.
2018
3DS Users Group, Inc. (3DSUG)As more and more users operated technologies from other additive manufacturing companies, the users group elected to open its doors (speakers, AMUGexpo and Sponsors Program) to companies other than 3D Systems. Membership continued to be owners/operators of stereolithography and selective laser sintering.
