The Home Spun trend direction highlights recycled and homemade crafts. As society has become more aware of the importance of buying local and eco-friendly products, the made-at-home movement has captured the attention of the masses. Hyper-consumerism is at a grind. Our throwaway society has been turned upside down in many respects. In this economic downturn more people have greater appreciation for those things made local, made with love and made of high quality. Home Spun celebrates the made-at-home movement by focusing on three ways this movement has continued to popularize over recent years.

The made-at-home movement started taking shape decades ago within the home craft and gift trade industries. Over the years there has been a steady growth of attendees and exhibitors at gift trade industry events. Homemade is a growing exhibition at the New York International Gift Fair: one of the largest craft shows with over 35,000 attendees who visit over 2,600 exhibitors twice each year. Homemade exhibits two distinct collections of handcrafted merchandise that includes apparel, textiles, accessories and more. Another example is The Craft Organization Development Association, the largest craft organization, which serves a growing number of organizations with education and professional development to promote public appreciation and understanding of craft. Member organizations are from all regions of the United States and Canada and repre-sent well over 150,000 craftspeople in North America.

Secondly, one would think recycled fashion shows are a new phenomenon. However, Oregon State University has the longest-running recycled fashion show in the country. Twenty years later the show is still going on. Haute Trash, another long-standing organization, arranges “trash fashion” events for adults, children and families. According to Haute Trash, the idea for trash fashions was said to have come to founder Susan Lamela while she was repairing a designer suit. She went on to create simple designs made from uncommon apparel materials, such as trash bags, aluminum foil and plastic wrap with duct tape accents.

Lastly, Etsy, whose mission is to influence the global economy by supporting small businesses, allows crafters to pursue their passion with the potential of financial reward. As of April 2010, Etsy sold a total of 1.3 million items within its community of shop owners. The Home Spun trend direction was inspired in part by a few shops: Mila Art folk (art and handmade dolls), Made By Hand (crocheted and vintage accessories) and Banana Orange Apple a shop of handmade art, toys, home goods and more.

The Home Spun trend direction captures the essence of pretty things that are nostalgic. This beautiful trend forecast showcases sentimental imagery of crafty knits, rich colors, beautiful dolls, home goods and folk inspired print and pattern.
