What is Wind?

Wind- the movement of air from an area of high pressure (more dense) to an area of low pressure (less dense).

Different Pressure is caused by the uneven heating of the Earth’s surface.

High Pressure COLD AIR-

contracts and is more dense, so it sinks

Low Pressure WARM AIR-

expands and is less dense so it rises.

In your journal, provide an example of conduction, convection and radiation. Then, answer this question.

Why or why not?

Winds do not just blow from N to S…Why?

Coriolis Effect- the spinning of the Earth that causes wind and water to be deflected right and left

Global Winds

Polar Easterlies- cold winds in the polar region that move from EAST to WEST

Westerlies- winds from the west that moves towards poles. Moves weather systems across the

United States

East Trade Winds-winds that move from the east to the west.

Doldrums- windless zones near the equator because the hot air rises

Do Now

On the back of your wind notes, define land breeze and sea breeze using the book’s glossary.

Then use page 1o7 to draw a picture of the land and sea breeze.
