MA & PhD University of Wisconsin-Madison

Associate Professor of English and Chair of Honors at SUNY Rockland Community College

Began working with OERs in 2016

Trained “OER Faculty Champion” (SUNY OER Services)

Who is joining us today? Librarians? Faculty? Staff? Administrators? Students?

MY THESISOpen educational resources are a perfect fit with CSCU’s mission.

OERs allow instructors more flexibility in their teaching methods, which in turn leads to innovative and transformative pedagogy that, through low/no-cost course text solutions, fosters student success and supports a curriculum through which students come to realize their full potential.

CSCU'S MISSIONThe Connecticut State Colleges & Universities (CSCU) contribute to the creation of knowledge and the economic growth of the state of Connecticut by providing affordable, innovative, and rigorous programs. Our learning environments transform students and facilitate an ever increasing number of individuals to achieve their personal and career goals.

AGENDAWhat are OERs?

Why might you wish to use them?

● Cost

● Access

● Pedagogy

What professional development opportunities

exist to support OER work?

SUNY’S OER SAVINGS• “In the current academic year [2017-2018], OER has replaced textbooks in

more than 4,000 course sections with enrollments totaling nearly 100,000students, saving more than a combined total of $12.3 million.”

• "The use of OER throughout SUNY holds the promise of significant financial savings for our students while also empowering our faculty to provide a more individualized student experience with customizable content…Thank you to the librarians and staff throughout SUNY and CUNY who have made this important project a reality.” – SUNY Chancellor Kristina Johnson

OERS ARE NOT A PANACEA, BUT THEY MAKE A DIFFERENCE.

AND WE CAN PROVE IT.Achieving the Dream reported on October 10, 2018 that “a new study examining implementation of one of the nation’s largest efforts to expand the use of Open Education Resources (OER) in colleges found significant benefits to instruction and student learning experiences as well as student savings a result of OER.”

“[T]he study revealed that low-income students are using these resources to cover college tuition, personal expenses like rent and child care, learning materials, and courses that can help them stay in school.”https://www.achievingthedream.org/press_release/17506/new-study-reveals-that-oer-courses-and-degrees-benefit-student-
