THOUGHTS ON COACHING

Because healing is a process, the metamorphosis of the role of doctor to healer is the change from doer to helper, from expert problem solver and fixer to servant and companion, an accompanier on the healing journey.

Thomas Egnew, EdDAnnals of Family Medicine, 2009

mission/aspirations/purpose (MAP)

26

DISTINGUISHING FEATURES OF WHC

The belief behind [integrative] health coaching is that behavior changes are sustainable when linked to personal values and sense of purpose.

Medicine, 2 (3), 48 – 57.

27

DISTINGUISHING FEATURES OF WHC

Patients (Veterans) bring to the coach information and recommendations from their treatment providers and work with the coach to decide which ones to enact and most importantly how to do so in a way they can sustain given all they know about their lives.

17TH CENTURY NUN’S PRAYER

Keep me from the fatal habit of thinking I must say something on every occasion. Release me from craving to straighten out everybody's affairs. Make me thoughtful but not moody; helpful but not bossy.

(Continued….)

36

17TH CENTURY NUN’S PRAYER

With my vast store of wisdom, it seems a pity not to use it all, but I want a few friends at the end.

Keep my mind free from recitals of endless details; give me wings to get to the point.

Give me the ability to see good things in unexpected places, and talents in unexpected people. And, give me, the grace to tell them so.

51

FORMAL AND INFORMAL PRACTICES

Formal Practice• Sitting in stillness (usually)• “Noticing” internal or external sensations• Mindful walking, eating, body scan, awareness of sound or breath• Led by self or another

Informal Practice• Bringing full attention to the unfolding experience of something you

are already doing (eating a meal, petting a dog, washing dishes)

55

PRACTICE: MINDFUL MOMENT

• Ask permission• Settle in and feel the support of your chair• Invite to lower gaze or close eyes• Notice your breath (inhalation, chest/belly rise and fall, exhalation)• When attention wanders, notice where it went• Gently bring attention back to breath• Allow PAUSES (to allow people to practice)• Bring practice to a close• Check-in ("What did you notice?")

56

MINDFUL AWARENESS CONSIDERATIONS

• Mindful moments may trigger thoughts, emotions, physical discomfort for some

-Be familiar with warm hand-off process• Not required to do mindful moment in every session• Always ask permission!• Briefly check-in, “What did you notice?”

57

VETERAN RESOURCES AND HANDOUTS

58

MINDFULNESS RESOURCES

Mindful awareness is NOT a mindfulness practice

Personal knowledge and experience with a mindfulness practice is essential to embody it and share it effectively with others

Some resources for learning to facilitate mindfulness with others• VA CALM• International Mindfulness Teachers Association (IMTA) accredited training programs (MBIs)• MBSR Teacher Training Programs
