(in a nutshell)

St. Ignatius College moved to its current location and became Loyola University Chicago in 1922.

St. Ignatius College Prep exists at the

original location on Roosevelt Road.

Loyola University Chicago was founded in 1870 by Arnold Damen, SJ, when the Catholic church saw a need to provide education to marginalized and underserved Irish immigrants on the West Side of the city.

St. Ignatius didn’t always live like a saint.

Ignatius of Loyola was born to a family of nobility in Spain in 1491.

Ignatius aspired to be a knight because of the notoriety it provided. He also liked his good looks, wine, and the ladies.

From Sinner to Saint

After being hit in the leg by a cannonball at the Battle of Pamplona, Ignatius survived a gruesome

surgery and extensive recuperation.

While laid up in bed, he had access to two books to pass the time. One of these books, Life of

Christ, inspired his conversion and conviction to live his life in service to God and others.

The Society of Jesus

Ignatius realized he needed to go to college to be viewed as legitimate by the Church. He began his studies at the age of 33 (!), eventually completing his degree at the University of Paris.

Post-conversion, Ignatius spent a year living in a cave (no joke!) in Northeast Spain. During this time, he journaled his prayer life and developed the Spiritual Exercises, one of his enduring legacies. Many of the LUC values are based on these traditions of reflection and discernment.

In Paris, Ignatius met other men who had a similar vision of faith in action. Eventually 10 of them founded the Society of Jesus, which was formally recognized by the Pope in 1540. Two of his most notable companions were St. Francis Xavier and the Blessed Peter Faber.

The Next Thing They Knew

• To increase their numbers, starting in 1548 the small order began opening schools in Asia and Europe to educate new recruits.

• The Jesuit approach to education stood out in its quality, inclusivity, and service. Soon they were receiving requests to open schools around the globe.

• Although the original mission of the Jesuits was not directly related to education, the order is now best known for education.

There are now 28 Jesuit colleges and universities in 19 states and Washington, DC.
