Walter Drost-Hansen (1925–2012)

Professor emeritus W. ‘‘Drost’’ Drost-Hansen was born on Sep-tember 29, 1925 and died July 1, 2012. He graduated from GentofteStatsskole (1944) and later took the Magister Konference in Chem-istry at the University of Copenhagen (1950). During his graduatework he spent 4 years of study at the Niels Bohr Institute. He heldvarious research positions, worked in the petroleum industry andwas on the faculty of the University of Miami until his retirementin 1998.

Drost published over 100 papers, book chapters and reports,including the introduction of the far-reaching concept of ‘‘vicinalwater’’ [long-range water structure modifications induced by prox-imity to solid surfaces and large macromolecules in aqueous solu-tions] and the concept of Thermal Transition Temperaturessometimes called ‘‘thermal anomalies.’’ The scientific communitywill miss his creative and novel contributions to these and relatedareas.
