ONLINE RETAIL SALES FORECASTS IN THE USA
The USA is the second largest market worldwide by a sum of B2C and C2C E-
Commerce sales, as of 2016. With around two-thirds of Internet users making purchases
online, B2C E-Commerce reached a share of close to 10% of total retail sales in this country.
All five major sources cited in the new report by yStats.com see further room for growth of
online retail sales in the USA for several years to come, but the majority expect growth rates
to moderate.
Throughout the forecast period, one of the most important drivers of online retail
sales growth in the USA will be M-Commerce. Mobile shopping is expected to account for
nearly 50% of all E-Commerce sales in the USA by 2020, according to three forecasts cited in
the yStats.com report. Omnichannel initiatives of major retailers, such as Wal-Mart, Target
and Home Depot will be another encouraging factor. Finally, Amazon is expected to play a
major role in driving B2C E-Commerce sales by pressuring its rivals on price, delivery times
and customer experience.

the USA. The report is based purely on secondary market research and
does not contain any sales forecasts produced by the report publisher.
The forecasts cited in this report were produced by various
reputable sources and differ in definition, methodology and the time
period referenced. The sources may refer to B2C E-Commerce sales as
online retail sales, Internet retailing sales, E-Commerce sales or online
shopping/online retail GMV. Some of the sources include both B2C and
C2C sales in their sales definitions, while others excluded or did not
mention C2C in their methodology. The majority of original sources
excluded travel and/or other services from their definition and included
M-Commerce sales.
Most of the forecasts cited in this report were published within
the previous 12 months.

Comparisons chapter. It opens with a qualitative overview of the B2C E-
Commerce market in the USA (a text chart). The country’s share of global
E-Commerce sales in 2016 and 2020 is revealed, and the country’s

other top markets worldwide. Next, some key market characteristics,
including online shopper penetration and number, product categories
purchased online, top B2C E-Commerce market players and M-Commerce

through 2020. Not all the years were covered by each of the sources. Within
this table, the forecasts that contain the years 2015 and 2020 are presented
