The Key to Individual and Organizational Success: Polished Skills in 5 Critical AreasOrganizations don’t excel because of a strong vision or a charismatic leader alone. They excel because
their employees are passionate and empowered to carry out that vision. The University of Louisville’s
Delphi Center has identified five critical skills managers need to stimulate productivity, performance
and passion. We like to refer to these as the “Five Empowering Pillars of Management” that drive the
development and design of all our programs.
Imagine if your organization exhibited all of these success factors:
•A drive for greater productivity with an openness to change
• The ability to quickly identify and address worthy problems
• The pursuit of new and revolutionary ideas dedicated to your organization’s
and your customers’ success
•An environment of effective interaction and teamwork
•A motivating culture that stimulates innovation and the passion to continually move your
organization forward
It’s possible if your organization is led by managers focused on the five skill sets essential to effective
leadership.
As the diagram indicates, key organizational success factors such as an innovative culture, productivity and
change and effective interaction are driven by managers who have mastered skills in the following areas:
Leadership and Management. These skills are necessary to convey the organization’s vision, recruit
and retain the best talent, boost individual and team
performance, and lead successful change
initiatives.
Organization and
Productivity. Managers
with these insights
stay focused on
what really
matters by
effectively
managing time,
stress and the
multiple projects
and priorities many
of us face.
Critical Thinking. The
ability to think critically
leads to effective decision-making,
innovation, and problem-solving that moves
people, processes and services to new levels.
Interactive and Formal Communications. Skilled communicators have the ability to effectively
present ideas, engage others, and develop harmonious relationships that align organizations.
Coaching and Motivation. These skills enable managers to elevate the performance, productivity and
passion of others, resulting in increased personal accountability.
Develop your organization’s managers with the Delphi Center’s leadership-focused workshops!
The workshops in this catalog are essential to organizations driven to succeed by empowering their
managers. Whether you’re looking to boost your own career or elevate the talent of others, we invite
you to experience the immediate and long-term impact of these workshops. They will raise your level of
success and the passion with which you lead others.

This class takes a no-nonsense look at how we manage other people
and how we can excite them about performing better. Two days

nights, rather than lie awake wondering how to lead your people.

Emotional Intelligence: The Foundation for Lifelong Professional and Organizational Success
Instructor:
Diane Banic
Schedule:
Thursday, 09/22/11
Course #127CBF
Register
Fee: $349
Research indicates that, for jobs of every type, Emotional Intelligence
is twice as important as IQ and technical skills combined. Moreover, EI
accounts for 85% of what separates star performers from average ones.
It happens all the time: visionaries get fired, potential star employees
fail to meet expectations, and groups of the most promising staff
can’t seem to get the job done. It’s not for a lack of skill or desire;
it is often simply an understanding of how to recognize and apply
our own and others’ feelings in the workplace. This has become the
foundation for the impact of Emotional Intelligence*, insights that
even the most seasoned executives often lack.
When properly understood and applied, EI creates a new, more
consistent level of star performance throughout an organization
and throughout an individual’s career. Emotional Intelligence can
be learned and developed. Start reaping the many benefits of EI by
registering for this workshop!
You Will Discover:
• EI’s relationship to IQ—why relationships are as important as
skill sets
• The value of EI at different job levels
•How to use EI to dramatically increase productivity and
performance
•What makes emotionally intelligent organizations more
successful and their people more engaged
•How to use 3 popular EI assessments to enhance your
organization’s culture and productivity
•How to implement EI to enhance customer and co-worker
relationships
*Daniel Goleman, author of
the bestseller, Working with
Emotional Intelligence, describes
EI as “recognizing and managing
our own feelings and those of
others—the fundamentals upon
which are built such important
organizational competencies as
outstanding leadership, customer
service and teamwork.”

Instructor:
Linda Combs

communications. This can certainly haunt managers who are
striving to establish strong relationships with their staff, peers and
supervisors.

techniques, and practice in creating professional e-mails that readers
will respect, understand, and act upon.
You’ll learn to:
• Compose e-mails that enhance, not undercut, your professional image
•Make your e-mail’s purpose and desired action undeniably clear

and effectively
•Write shorter and better formatted e-mails
• Spot mistakes that might ordinarily slip through your editing and
proofing processes

skills every manager needs; yet, many have not had the chance to develop. Each workshop provides
tools that are immediately applicable, so your managers will begin to make an impact upon returning to
the office the following day.
Greater Respect
We appreciate the needs and the potential of each individual learner. Our sessions are taught by training
and business professionals who know how to facilitate collaborative learning. Your managers will draw
from their own knowledge and experience as they gain new tools and skills for immediately enhancing
their own performance and the performance of those who report to them.
Greater Recognition
We offer workshops that recognize the total manager—those who excel in all five critical skill sets.
These are the most valuable employees an organization can have. We will help you recognize employees
who commit to mastering these five skill sets with framed certificates from the University of Louisville.
This special recognition reflects their dedication to leadership and self-development as well as your
organization’s commitment to develop its managers. We also offer a Certificate in Professional
Development for non-managers. See page 6 for certificate details.

Surprise! The Most Successful Leaders Excel in the Basics
We live in a society that looks for “quick fixes.” We jump on trends. We race to grab the latest gimmicks
because we worry about being left behind. The 90’s are a perfect example. The dot-com craze found
investors supporting technology that lacked business plans for success. Companies were excited about
products that just did not have a market. Encouraged by an industry boom, these companies and their
shareholders later experienced the results of pursuing hot trends when the bubble burst.
The same can be said for management. There is a rush to bring in short-term success ideas. Sizzle
takes precedence over substance. Top-down politics outweighs dedication to quality and focus on
long-term management.
Many businesses flounder today because they have lost focus on what matters in driving organizational
success. Talk to HR managers and top executives and you’ll learn what frustrates them the most.
Personal accountability is lacking in their employees. Staffs lack trust in their managers. Managers are
not sure how to align their departments. There is a major resistance to change; priority is placed on self-
preservation over productivity.
In looking for “quick fixes,” many organizations promote or hire untrained management teams. The
result? Most new managers actually survive less than two years in their jobs. A Hay Group survey
reveals that the cause lies in the inability to fulfill three critical management roles of empowerment
and engagement: casting a clear vision others can follow, failure to create a team environment, and
insensitivity to others.
Primary reasons leaders fail:
The Delphi Center’s workshops are designed to address these three critical roles and others essential
to management success. We believe that leadership at all levels—especially at the managerial level—
can be one of an organization’s most powerful assets. That’s why each workshop is taught from a
leadership perspective.
Organizations that develop leaders at all levels enjoy many benefits including highly-engaged
and motivated employees, successful change initiatives, enhanced creativity and critical thinking,
improvements in teamwork, and greater productivity throughout the organization. We invite your
organization to experience the Delphi Center difference through our leadership-based workshops and
certificate programs.
