Brenda Moeder has worked in housing since her undergrad. Brenda attended
Kansas State
University for
her
undergraduate
degree where she
worked has a
food service
person (otherwise
known as K-State
Freshies). After
that job, Brenda
served as a front
desk worker. Her
last three years
she served as a
Resident
Assistant.
Brenda loved her
Resident
Assistant
position and
found that that
role gave her
purpose. That
Resident
Assistant
position was her
start into
Student Affairs.

Following Brenda’s undergraduate degree, she also attended Kansas State
University to receive her Masters in Higher Education and College Student
Development. She became the Assistant Complex Director. She ran two front desks
and also advised two hall councils while in that role.
(The picture to the right is of Brenda Moeder and one of her mentees who she has
had an amazing impact on). Brenda also had an internship the summer in between
her graduate studies. That internship was located at the University of Tennessee. In her free time with this positon, she got to explore around and learn more about
herself prior to receiving a full-time position.
After earning her
Masters, Brenda
then took a job at
University of
Wisconsin-Stout.
She worked as a
Hall Director
there for a couple
of years.

Missouri’s

Directors at the
Fall Leadership
Retreat in 2016). After her time
was done as a

Hall Director, she started working at the University of Central Missouri, which is
where Brenda has been for over 20 years now. Her first role was as a live-in Area
Coordinator. She was in charge of the following residence halls: Houts-Hosey,
Nickerson, and Nattinger-Bradshaw. She stayed in Nattinger-Bradshaw, but her
office was at Houts-Hosey during this time. During this role she became the advisor
for the National Residence Hall Honorary and the United Student Housing
Association. Following that position, she became the Assistant Director of Housing. Within that role, she was in charge of all operations, contracts, and room
assignments. She still advised the National Residence Hall Honorary and the
United Student Housing Association. Her next role was Associate Director of
Housing. She then not only advised, but also gained the responsibility to supervise
all of the apartments. She also started picking up facilities projects. Also, while she
was in this position, there was a point where the University of Central Missouri
needed a Director of Career Services. The President of the university approached
Brenda about taking
over this position.
Brenda decided to
take over this
position while still
handling all the
responsibilities as
Associate Director of
Housing until the
position could be
filled by another
person. After the
position of Director
of Career Services
was filled, she then
oversaw that
position as well. During that time,
she was considered
as a Special
Assistant to the Vice
President of Student
Affairs.

(The picture to the right is of Brenda Moeder helping out at the Fall Leadership
Retreat). Her last and most current position is as Director of Housing, Facilities,
and Operations. With that she does everything from operations to housing contracts
to room assignments to supervising the apartments. Basically, in this role, she does
all the behind-the-scenes work to make sure housing is running smoothly. With
this, she is actively involved in all of the furnishings of all University Housing,
specifically in regards to the newest building, the Crossing. She also serves as the
liaison for Facilities, Planning, and Operations management staff regarding any
maintenance and custodial
concerns. She also is in
charge of University
Housing’s departmental
website. She even is the
person who handles medical
appeals for housing, which
most definitely is a hard and
tasking subject to deal with.
(This picture below is of
Brenda and one of her
supervisees).
Brenda advised the National
Residence Hall Honorary and
the United Student Housing
Association for 15 years. This
advisory was then taken
away from her responsibility,
but she oversees the advisor
to ensure that they are doing
a good job. This is especially
the case because she has been
in that role for so long. Brenda also is a big supporter
of both groups. She attends as
many general body meetings
for the United Student
Housing Association as she
can. She also always attends
Page | 6
the Stars Reception which is put on by both organizations as an award banquet for
the outstanding work the hall councils do. She even ensures to bring smiles to
resident’s faces while sitting with them during the event.
Brenda earned her Doctor of Education in Educational Leadership through the
University of Missouri-Columbia. Because Brenda has this degree, she also serves
as an adjunct professor. She teaches classes when it is needed. The classes she has
taught is Student Development Theory II, Governance and Finance in Higher
Education, Organizational Leadership, Teams and Group Dynamics, Summer
Internship in Student Affairs, Independent Studies on Leadership and Student
Development Theory, University 1000, and Valuing Differences. Brenda also has
been a research mentor for the Impact of Involvement in Greek Organizations
course. Brenda is currently teaching Student Development Theory I.
(This picture to the left

niece. Even though she
works hard for the
university, she ensures
to take care of her little
niece when needed). Brenda also has
served and is still
serving on various
University Housing
projects and
committees. With
that, she has been the
Search Committee
Chair for an Area
Coordinator. She also
helps out with
Residence Hall
Director Training,
Community Advisor

Selection and Training, and Office Assistant Recruitment. Even though Brenda
loves housing, she has also been a part of committees and projects that better the
University of Central Missouri’s community as a whole. She has served as the
chairperson for Family Weekend, Beyond Words Oppression Experience, and
Interim Campus Activities Director Search Committee Chairperson. She also is a
part of the College Student Personnel Program Coordinator Search Committee,
Director of Institution Effectiveness Search Committee, Human Resources Director
Search Committee, and Director of Campus Activities Search Committee. She also
has helped coordinate the first annual university-wide student job fair.
Brenda has three major on-campus level goals. Her first goal is not make people
made. While this is a great goal to have, it is a hard one to achieve because it is not
realistic. There is always someone who will be made about something that one does
because her role is to enforce University Housing policies. Her second goal is to set
up processes behind the scenes that help the resident. Interestingly enough, she
believes this is best done when people do not know or realize what she is doing. Her
final goal is to continue to oversee on the facilities side. She wants to insure that
money is always invested into bettering the facilities for residents to stay in.
(The picture to the left is of Brenda serving cookies at one of the United Student
Housing Association’s general body meetings). Brenda views her campus
achievements as her long term impacts in student affairs. At the Upper Midwest
Region-Association of College and University Housing Officials conference in 2007,
she won the Robert E. Mosier Professional Enrichment Award. In 2010, Brenda
Moeder won the John Paul Mees Award for Outstanding Professional Staff through
Page | 8
the University of Central Missouri because
of all her hard work. She also won a bid and
then built from scratch a program to build
processes on her computer. She got
playground equipment at Central Village,
which is where families can stay at if one is
a student attending the University of
Central Missouri. Brenda also is proud of
the fact that University Housing was able to
provide new furniture. All the old furniture
was then donated to places of high needs. That totally over 1 million pounds of
furniture. Lastly, Brenda values her
relationships. She loves stay in contact with
the people that she has made friends with
over the years. Brenda also has been award
2-3 bronze pins from various presidents she
has advised over the years.
(This picture to the left is of Brenda
holding a cow in front of her face. At this
time, this was all the University of Central
Missouri had for their traveling Molly). Brenda has not only held up her
responsibilities for MACURH and
NACURH while serving as the United
Student Housing Association and the
National Residence Hall Honorary, but
she attended numerous conferences. Whenever No Frills-no known as the
Regional Business Conference-was hosted
at the University of Central Missouri,
Brenda was the advisor for the team that
Page | 9
put on the conference. Brenda also traveled to NACURH while she was employed at
the University of Wisconsin-Stout. She also has served as the conference advisor to
several delegations for various MACURH-related conferences over the years.
Brenda also has served heavily on the Upper Midwest Region-Association of College
and University Housing Officers (UMR-ACUHO). Between 1997 and 1999, she
started out on the Program Committee. Following this, Brenda was the Executive
Committee Secretary between 1999 and 2001. She eventually became a conference
host co-chair for the 2003 conference. This then led to Brenda serving as the Vice
President/President Elect of UMR-ACUHO in 2004. She stopped serving on the
executive board after she had her Presidency in 2005.
Listed below is Brenda’s extensive list of her
conference experience.
17 years of attending MACURH Regional Leadership Conferences.
o This was consecutive attendance.
17 years of attending MACURH No Frills Conferences (These are
now known as Regional Business Conferences).
o This was consecutive attendance.
8 years of NACURH Conferences.
o This was random times of attendance when funding was
available and residents wished to attend.

23 years of UMR-ACUHO Conferences.
o This is consecutive attendance.
2 years of ACUHO-I Conference attendance.
o One of these years she worked as a volunteer.
8 years of attending summer and winter business meetings.
(The picture to the left is of Brenda and
one her colleagues). Brenda has also
presented so many programs at
conferences that she cannot remember
all the names of them. Brenda
presented approximately 15 programs
at UMR-ACUHO Conferences. She
also has presented 5 programs to
advisors at MACURH-related
conferences. Every fall and spring,
there are Housing Leadership Retreats
put on for the hall councils. She does
not always present here, but does so
frequently. She also has presented
several programs at the Kansas
Resident Assistant conferences. She
even was the keynote speaker there
one year.

Brenda has chosen to be involved in housing for so long for four major reasons.
Brenda loves housing. She also loves the opportunity to wear multiple hats. Specifically, she does not like doing the same thing every day and her role allows
her to change it up. Her role fits her type A processor. Lastly, Brenda loves the
ability to interact with other people. There is most definitely no better positon for
Brenda to work in other than the one she has currently.
(The picture to the left is of
Brenda. This picture definitely
embodies her fun-loving
personality). Due to her non-
glamorous role involving
furniture, meal plans, and
contracts, her motivation
stems from intrinsic values. She loves making a
difference. In fact, Brenda
believes the biggest difference
she can make is when
residents do not know that
she has made the difference
but it has helped their lives
on campus a lot. Brenda also
Page | 12
has a nice sense of humor, which shows through and helps motivate the people she
works with as well. (This picture displayed below is of Brenda and one of her
colleagues).
Brenda Moeder is also extremely passionate about community service. She
participates in ongoing fundraisers to support international adoption through the
America World Adoption Agency. She also does fundraising for the American
Cancer Society. Every year, she participates in Operation Christmas Child, which is
an organization that sends boxes of gifts to people who do not get to celebrate the
holidays with presents because they cannot afford to do so. Lastly, she helps out
with both the World Vision Child Sponsorship and the Compassion International
Child Sponsorship.
Page | 13
Brenda is most proud
of her students. Specifically, Brenda
loves when it comes to
graduation time. She
likes to see everyone
in the crowd and
realize that although
she might not have
ever physically met
any of them, she
maybe played a part
in their success. She
likes that they are
moving on with their
life and starting fresh,
which all could have
been due to her hard
work in the residence
halls. With someone who takes such pride in her work and the people around her,
there is no one better to win the Hallenback Service Award. (This picture on the
page above is of Brenda Moeder, one of her coworkers, and also one of her graduate
students).
