Inspirational speaker who went from homeless to HarvardFrom homeless to Harvard...it is an unlikely turn of events. Liz Murray’s life is a triumph over adversity and a stunning example of the importance of dreaming big. Murray’s life as the child of cocaine-addicted parents in the Bronx was bitterly grim. There was never food in the house, everything was filthy, drugs were everywhere, and the welfare checks were spent before they arrived.
Power of the Purse 2016 5
By age 15, Murray’s mom had died and she was homeless—living on the streets, riding the subway all night, and eating from dumpsters. Amidst this pain, Murray always imagined her life could be much better than it was. “I started to grasp the value of the lessons learned while living on the streets. I knew after overcoming those daily obstacles that next to nothing could hold me down.” Determined to take charge of her life, Murray finished high school in just two years and was awarded a full scholarship to Harvard University, all while camping out in New York City parks and subway stations.
Murray’s story is exhilarating and inspirational. Her delivery is innocently honest, as she takes audiences on a very personal journey where she achieves the improbable.
Her story sounds like a Hollywood movie—and it practically is. Lifetime Television produced a movie about Murray’s life story entitled Homeless to Harvard, which was nominated for three Emmy Awards. Murray is the recipient of the White House Project’s Role Model Award and Oprah Winfrey’s first-ever Chutzpah Award. Her memoir, Breaking Night, landed on the New York Times Bestseller List within a week of its release and quickly became an international bestseller published in twelve countries, in eight languages.

10 Women’s Leadership Council
Women’s Leadership Council United Way of Central and Northeastern Connecticut
Who We AreUnited Way of Central and Northeastern Connecticut Women’s Leadership Council is a diverse network of local women who stand up and take action to help strengthen women and families in our community.
What We DoThe Women’s Leadership Council raises awareness and revenue to support children succeeding in school and families being financially secure. When families are financially secure, health outcomes improve, children do better in school and our communities are stronger.
How We Are Helping Families SucceedMember contributions and proceeds raised from Power of the Purse support the Women’s Leadership Council’s Family Financial Stability Initiative (FFSI). The initiative helps lower-income adults living in Hartford, with a primary focus on women, effectively manage their finances and achieve financial goals. Through one-on-one coaching and financial education, participants learn how to create a plan to reach their goals, by focusing on creating a budget, reducing debt, improving credit scores, and building savings.
Women may enroll in a matched savings program, allowing them to save and receive a one-to-one dollar match towards their savings goals such as a car, tuition, a computer, or a security deposit or down payment on a home, etc.
The Village for Families & Children, a local nonprofit organization, is the managing organization, in partnership with United Way and Hartford Partnership for Student Success.
Results From the Family Financial Stability InitiativeSince the inception of the Women’s Leadership Council’s financial stability work in 2011, nearly 400 women have attended over 1,000 individual coaching sessions. Nearly 150 women have participated in the matched savings account program, saving over $20,000 and receiving a one-to-one dollar match towards their savings goals. There are currently 45 women enrolled in the matched savings program working towards achieving their dreams.

The Family Financial Stability Initiative also offers free tax preparation services as part of the Volunteer Tax Assistance Program. More than 2,000 tax returns have been filed at the two FFSI neighborhood sites since 2011 returning nearly $4.5 million in refunds and credits to our local economy.
How We Are Helping Children SucceedIn the summer of 2014, the Women’s Leadership Council mobilized a group of women to focus on United Way’s educational goals. Members engaged in a series of volunteer opportunities to build literacy kits—books and related props that bring stores to life and make reading fun.
Over the last several years, the Women’s Leadership Council has supported numerous volunteer experiences, including hosting two Family Literacy Nights at Dwight-Bellizzi Asian Studies Academy in partnership with COMPASS Youth Collaborative and a pop-up Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) Night at the Alfred E. Burr School, wherein members engaged children in financial themed educational activities while their parents had their taxes prepared by VITA volunteers.
Become a Woman of Leadership in our CommunityUnited Way Women’s Leadership Councils are a global network of 70,000 passionate, caring women in 160 communities dedicated to addressing the most critical needs of our world.
Since mobilizing in 2002, the councils have collectively raised $1.2 billion, making it one of the most successful philanthropic movements of its kind. Locally, the Women’s Leadership Council has raised more than $1 million to support hard-working women and families in our community.

What are participants saying about the Family Financial Stability Initiative (FFSI)?
“ The matched savings program gives women an opportunity to gain control of their lives through financial management. Through budget coaching and money matching, women are able to secure a future for themselves and their families.”
K. Taylor
“ This program has helped me climb out of debt, reorganized my priorities and allowed me to begin the road to savings. I will continue to use the tools taught and make smarter financial decisions.”
C. Martinez
“ This program gives you the tools needed to achieve your goals and it also shows you how to put them into practice”
P. Garcia
“ The FFSI program has been very beneficial for me. I learned how to focus on my finances, where my money was going and how much I was spending. I’ve become more consistent in my budget planning and that helps me to be more optimistic in setting goals.
A. Fernandez
“ FFSI has been very informative, providing me with new ways to improve my credit to be able to purchase my first home. The financial counselor has given me a sense of family and feeling of comfort while working with me through this process.”
C. Gonzalez

Being great neighbors helps our communities grow.
When neighbors prosper, our communities prosper. At First Niagara, it is the belief that drives how our teammates embrace the communities in which they live, work and play. It is what guides us when we provide opportunities for individuals and businesses to grow, mentoring our children, or give a helping hand to those in our community in need. As we go about our daily lives in our communities, we believe when neighbors help neighbors, anything seems possible.
