This Week’s Agenda

Today’s Agenda

•Practice identifying the layers of skin.

•Daily Quiz•Hair follicles, hair color•Follicle labeling

Daily Quiz

Hair Follicle

See Diagram

Hair Color:• Hair Pigment—made by

melanocytes at the base of the hair follicle and transferred to cortical cells.

• Different proportions of three types of melanin (brown, black, yellow) combine to form the various hair colors.

• Grey/white—decreased melanin, air bubbles replace it in shaft

Two main types of hair

•Vellus—fine body hair

•Terminal hair—darker, coarse, longer

Hair cont

•Hair influenced by hormones, diet

•Follicles alternate growth/rest– Ie-head follicles grow up to 4 yrs/rest

–Eyebrow follicles only a few months

Hair growth cont.

• Thinning hair – reduced growth with age.

• Male pattern baldness– follicles grow hairs too short to emerge, those that do are vellus hairs. Minoxidil stimulates follicles to grow terminal hair

Sweat Glands – distributed all over body. (Sudoriferous)

•1. Eccrine – more numerous–99% water–Palms, soles, forehead, etc

•2. Apocrine—axillary and anogenital areas–Apocrine sweat contains fats & proteins

Sebaceous Glands (oil)

• Located all over body except palms and soles. Large on face/chest, small on body.

• Secrete oil called SEBUM• Function; lubricate, prevent water

loss
