Authoritarian or Autocratic Leadership Style

Authoritarian or Autocratic The leader is the absolute authority on all matters, deciding

what to do. Although work may be completed in a way that the leader has specified, at the same time employees innovation is discouraged.

Advantage of Autocratic leadership

Works positively during emergency and stressful situations.

Quick decision making More group productivity while leader watches Better response to changes in the external environment

Disadvantages of Autocratic leadership Lack of involvement from the employee in the decision making process .

Autocratic leaders usually remain unpopular and damage working relationships with colleagues

Disagreements and conflicts may arise.

Participative or democratic leadership style

Participative or democratic leadersThe leader will consult with those likely to be

affected before making a decision, the leader will reserve the right not to act on a majority view.

Advantages of Democratic leadership style A positive work environment is created. Communication gap is reduced. They say two minds are better than one. Employee turnover reduction. Joint responsibility for the successful

implementation of decisions.

Disadvantage of Democratic leadership style Some managers adopt democratic leadership to please

their subordinates but fail to follow the technique in its entirety.

The decision making process might be a long drawn one since every team member needs to be consulted.

Laissez-faire or free-rein Leadership

style

Laissez-faire or free-reinIn this style of leadership the leader gives limited direction

to workers. Workers are left with general task to tackle.

Characteristics of laissez-faire leadership Very little guidance from leaders Allows followers to have complete

freedom to make decisions. The leader provides the followers with the

materials they need to accomplish their goals and answers questions to the follower's questions.

Charismatic Leadership style

Charismatic Leadership StyleA charismatic leader is one who influence and motivates

others because he or she has outstanding personality or character.
