TRANSPORTATION OF MATERIAL IN PLANTS

TO CREATE AN IDEA ON VASCULAR TISSUES (XYLEM AND PHLOEM). TO KNOW HOW WATER,MINERALS AND FOOD IS TRANSPORTED IN

PLANTS.

VASCULAR TISSUES™Plants Are Living Organisms Like Animals. They Need Water,Minerals And Food For Their Survival.

™The Transport Of Materials In Plants Is Carried Out By Two Types Of Conducting Tissues Called Xylem And Phloem Which Together Constitute The Vascular Tissue System.

™These Tissues Extend From The Tip Of The Root To The Tip Of The Leaves.

XYLEM™The Xylem Transports Water And Minerals Upwards From The Roots To The Leaves.

™Evaporation Of Water From The Leaves During Transpiration Produces A Pulling Force Causing Water To Move Up.

™The Movement Of Water And Minerals In Xylem Is Unidirectional.

XYLEM

PHLOEM™Phoelm Carries The Food Prepared By The Leaves To All The Parts Of The Plants Including Roots.

™However,in Some Plants The Material Made In The Roots Is Transported By Phloem Upwards To The Leaves.

™The Movement Of Materials In Phloem Is Bidirectional.

PHLOEM

TRANSPORTATION OF WATER,MINERALS & FOOD.™Plants Absorb Water And Minerals Through The Roots.

™The Roots Have Root Hairs Which Increase The Surface Area For The Absorption Of Water And Minerals Dissolved In Water.

™The Root Hairs Come In Contact With The Water Present Between The Soil Particles.

PASSAGE OF WATER FROM SOIL TO XYLEM VESSELS IN A ROOT

CONTINUATION™The Water Moves From The Root Hair To The Xylem In The Root.

™The Absorbed Water Then Move Up The Stem Throgh The Xylem By The Force Developed In The Leaves Due To Transpiration.

™This Is Called Transpiration Pull.

TRANSPIRATIONAL PULL

CONTINUATION™The Fluid Containing Water And Dissolved Nutrients Is Called Sap.

™The Movement Of Sap Through The Xylem Is Called Ascent Of Sap.

™The Food Prepared In The Leaves Is Transported From The Leaves To The Other Parts Of The Plant.

™This Process Is Known As Trans-location And It Mainly Takes Place Through Phloem
