ISSUE NO. 8 19th June 2017
Dear School Community,
HEAD LICE
It’s that me of the year again when head lice make their reappearance in schools
across the country. I have had many, many parents approach me over the past few
weeks, to ask about the school’s head lice policy.
Thomastown Primary School follows the guidelines as set out by the Department of
Educaon & Training (DET). The following is a summary of the steps we take at TPS
once a child is known to have live lice in their hair.
Staff member observes live lice in a child’s hair and nofies the office.
Child is sent to the school office.
Parents are called to collect child from school.
A noce is sent home to all parents of children in that class, informing them that
there has been a case of head lice detected and asking all parents to check
their child’s hair.
Parents treat child’s hair.
Child is ready to return to school on the day following the applicaon of a head
lice treatment.
Once upon a me, parents were required to provide schools with a doctor’s
cerficate stang that their child was clear of head lice. This is no longer a DET
requirement for returning to school. I must also point out that children can only be
excluded for the presence of live head lice, not for having lice eggs (nits) in their hair.
It can somemes take parents weeks to comb out all the dead eggs once their child’s
hair has been treated.
We know that it can be extremely frustrang for parents to have their child
repeatedly reinfested with head lice, but please be reassured that we take this
situaon very seriously and are doing everything we can to minimize the number of
children affected.

Inter-School Sport: Reservoir Views PS
v Thomastown PS It was a week of mixed results for our sports teams
for our very last week of ISS for Term 2. Soccer and
AFL teams played excellent football to achieve impres-
sive results, while our Tee-ball and Netball teams had
much tougher competition. Congratulations to everyone
for trying their best and for being such wonderful
representatives of TPS.
Next week: There are no further home and away
games for this term. All students who used the
school’s sporting uniforms this term, are reminded
that they need to be washed (and ironed where pos-
sible) and returned to the school by the end of the
week.
Division Cross Country: Wednesday
14th June 2017 While not all of TPS competitors
who qualified for Divisional competed on the day, we
did have 9 students compete in the Divisional Cross
Country last Wednesday. Everyone tried their best
in a very tough race and should be extremely proud
of their efforts on the day as well as in our training
sessions. It is fabulous that two of our competitors,
Tara Reea and Vicson Jackley qualified for the
Regional Cross Country to be held this Wednesday
(21st June) at Bundoora Park. We wish them all the
very best! (Training will be on Monday at lunchtime.)
And remember……
Try to have several junk-free days per week!
Homework Club Homework sessions at school for students in grades 4,5 and 6 run every
Tuesday from 3.30 - 4.30pm.
Children are able to stay at school and work in their classrooms on homework or unfinished assignments.
Teachers will be available to help your children.
Students will be able to use classroom resources, including computers, but only for schoolwork.
HELP URGENTLY NEEDED We urgently need volunteers to keep our canteen open for lunchtime
sales.
Children love to see someone from their family helping at school
and it is also a way of meeting other parents. If you could possibly help
weekly, fortnightly or monthly, please contact Anne at the office on 9465 2225.
