Specific Market Niche & Relevant Market Value

• Large & growing global market for industrial bamboo products (2006 – USD 10 billion; 10 yr forecast – up to USD 20 billion)

• In Ethiopia:- Bamboo sector mainly farmers and urban cottage industries (500

urban micro entrepreneurs producing furniture and handicrafts for domestic market)

- 2 bamboo manufacturing plant in Addis Ababa (producing value-added products such as bamboo-based boards for flooring and furniture; USD 38 per sq. meter)

- Wood processing factories are starting to diversify into bamboo production

- WSB and ABC – 3rd generation of laminate bamboo conquering the world market – zero processing waste with 12-15% saw dust production – variable uses from indoor furnishing to outdoor applications – market offers huge potential to Ethiopia

Problems Identified in the Supply Chain

• No concrete system established to strongly link bamboo raw materials and finished products to markets

• Lack of up-to-date database on the nature, volume and location of products that would serve the marketing of products

• No information on the nature and pattern of demand, location of markets and their character tics to guide products

• Practice of grading raw materials is very weak with no standards available• Lack of standards leads t difficulty in comparing raw material and finished

products for quality and pricing purposes – hindrance to penetrate international market

• Little experience in mass propagation by farmers (except at EABP sites)• Traditional marketing: market system is not broad based and integrated over

geographic location, sales points and customers, etc. • Varying prices and quality of products – no proper correlation between quality of

raw materials and revenue generated• Near-source pre-processing centres are non-existent – expensive & inefficient

transportation of culms to cities – low resource utility • Formation of associations facilitates the supply and grading of raw materials ,

pre-processing and manufacturing, common practice in EABP target sites which needs to be replicated in other areas.

Intervention Points• Economic potential of Ethiopia’s bamboo sector remains largely untapped

due to undeveloped value chains• Value chain development approach leads to greater production efficiency,

value addition at each link of the value chain, and price/quality competitiveness

• Value chain approach entails adaptation of appropriate technologies, production techniques, and organizational strategies

• Establishment of facilities at strategic regional locations to build up the industrial capacity and improve the supply chain

• Strengthening existing centre to serve as a hub and showcase bamboo industrial applications

These steps will significantly contribute to uplifting the economic conditions of disadvantaged groups and result in an overall development of the industrial sector.

Bamboo– the fastest growing plant in the world

The highest growth 1.21m/24hours

The highest bamboo

Up to 40 m in height and 30 cm in diameter in 2-3 months

There more than 1500 uses

High density bamboo fiber board

Bamboo pulp and paper making

Bamboo fiber & fabric

Bamboo beer, medicine

Bamboo juice/essence

Innovative bamboo-based panel for flooring, container board, train/truck floor, furniture

Over 230,000 m2 bamboo fire-proof ceiling is been using in Madrid International airport, Spain. The bamboo ceiling fits the highest European fire protection standard-M1 and consists of 5 layers of bamboo veneer. The invention on bamboo fire-proof products will promote bamboo utilization in many areas.

SustainabilitySustainability – National Bamboo Development Unit created

through 'The Bamboo Sector Strategy Framework

• Partners aligned and harmonized –FeMSEDA, UNIDO, MoARD, MoTI, INBAR, NGO’s, etc

• Private sector involvement increasing,

• Low absorption capacity easily implemented

• Lean project administration and use of existing staff is possible

What Partners can do

• Training and workshop

• Technology transfer

• Projects

• Information

• Marketing
