Part 1: Learn! You are living through history!- What is COVID-19?
- How can we help people in the future?- What are primary sources & secondary sources?
Part 2: Make! Get ready to gather artifacts! - Make a time capsule! This is a place where you will store all of your
primary sources, or “artifacts” from this historical time period.
Part 3: Document! - Each day, add to your time capsule! When we get back to school, we will
bring our time capsules to share with the class, but you can share primary source videos daily with a parent’s permission through a virtual time
capsule page through this flipgrid link here:Public -- Public: flipgrid.com/covid19timecapsule
The people of the future need your help!!
Can you help them?? Read
on to find out how! In this project, you will…

For the first time in history, businesses, restaurants, schools, colleges and universities, work places, entire cities and even countries are being shut
down and “quarantined.” Huge events such as major league sporting events, concerts, Broadway shows, religious gatherings, holiday parades and festivals, weddings, and more are ALL being cancelled or postponed. Words like “social distancing,” and “self-quarantine,” are trending, and have even been added to Merrium-Webster’s Dictionary as of March,
2020. But why??
Corona Virus, or COVID-19
The effects of COVID-19 have rapidly swept not just the nation, but the entire world.
You can learn more about COVID-19 and the effects it has had on the world by watching these videos, or by following the QR codes:

Did you knowThat you are living through a major event in history?
Well, YOU ARE!
Historical events need to be documented! This way, historians in the future can use our experiences to learn, and make sure people in the future don’t repeat mistakes
of the past.
How can you help future historians, scientists, politicians and more to help learn more about the COVID-19
pandemic, and prevent another??
Create primary sources!! These primary source will be the a look into the past for the researchers of the future!
By documenting this major world event, you are creating a primary source. What exactly is a primary source?
Here are some examples of primary sources from events that you MIGHT be familiar with!
Civil Rights Movement
Attack of September 11, 2001
Hurricane Sandy
World War II
Photograph of Dr. Martin Luther King at the March on Washington.
Newspaper article reporting on the assassination & burial of Civil Rights Leader, Dr. Martin Luther King.
Diary pages by Anne Frank. During World War !!, Anne Frank was a young girl who kept a diary while she was in hiding from the Nazis.
Her diary pages have been published as a book, and people have learned so much from her perspective and experience during the war.
Satellite photo
taken by NASA on October 25, 2012 by of the enormous storm cloud just before the storm.
Weather map showing the oath of the storm, posted as an imagine in an article by the Washington Post.
Newspaper article from the morning after the attacks in 2001.
Artwork created by an elementary student shortly after the attacks.
A primary source is a reliable first-hand account of an event. It is written or documented by someone with direct
knowledge or experience of an event. That means the writer was or is there for the event they are telling about!! Journals, interviews, photographs, newspaper articles videos,
etc. are all primary sources.
A secondary source has information that was created later or after an event), and is written by someone
who did not experience or participate in the event. For example, an encyclopedia or a textbook are secondary
sources.
The information learned in primary sources is used by historians, reporters, writers, and more to create informative secondary sources, like text books, encyclopedias, & more.
Watch these 3 short videos to learn more about primary sources, secondary sources, and how they are used! Then,
complete the chart on the following page.

Are you ready to help the historians of the future? You can! Create a…
COVID-19 TIME CAPSULE!A time capsule is a collection of goods or
information, placed in a container with a goal to communicate with future people about the past.
In our time capsule, we will be placing primary
sources that can teach people in the future about the COVID-19 pandemic.
But first, design and create your time capsule! Here are some ideas for materials you can use:
- Shoebox - Cardboard box (Leftover from Amazon, UPS, Fedex, etc.)
- Large paper bags - Construction paper
- Reuse old toy/storage plastic containers - Paint, crayons, markers, puff paint, cut out photos or
drawings, etc for decoration
These are just a few ideas. You can choose from this list, or use other materials of your choice, as long as your parents say it is ok! Turn the page to
get started planning yours!
COVID-19 TIME CAPSULE
_________________’ Design Plan
Directions: Use the space below to brainstorm and sketch how you will build, decorate, and design your time capsule. You have the freedom to be as creative as you want! If you can’t print this page out, use a blank sheet of notebook or computer paper for your drawing! The only rules are…
1. Your time capsule must say “_______’s Covid-19 Time Capsule” somewhere on the outside.
2. Your time capsule must be large enough and sturdy enough to hold various items inside securely.
3. Your time capsule must be unique to you! Be creative and have fun designing!
Let’s Get Started, Historians! Here’s what you MUST complete each day to
be an effective historian in our class: 1 – Complete a time capsule journal entry page.
Attached you will find journal entry sheets that you may choose to use to write your daily journal entries. Print out this packet, and use staple those pages together to make your time capsule journal. If you do not have access to a printer, you may choose to journal digitally on a Google document (I will print it for you when we get back to school), or you may use a notebook that you have at home and keep it inside your time capsule. If you are using a notebook from home, be sure to label the date at the top of each of your pages.
2 – Include AT LEAST one other artifact from home
to add to your time capsule per day. You may choose AT LEAST one additional item from the following:
- Photograph- Copy of an important article from a newspaper, magazine, or internet
source- A drawing, painting or other piece of artwork created by you.
Monday Tuesday Wednesday Thursday Friday
Daily Journal Entry & Photo of my family working
together
Daily Journal Entry & a Newspaper Article about the
Governor’s “shelter in place”
announcement over the weekend.
Daily Journal Entry & an illustration
showing my feelings.
Daily Journal Entry & a recent
magazine article from Scholastic
News!
Daily Journal Entry & a photo of my
sibling and I enjoying lunch
together at home.
Following these guidelines, here is an EXAMPLE of what you MIGHT include each day of the week!

Interested in adding more to your COVID-19 time capsule?
Here are some other ways you can document history! Remember, these are ADDITIONAL ideas. These are NOT required, but would be
awesome ways to add to your historical time capsule! -Write a letter to a family member, teacher, or friend.
-Document the weather. Keep a weather report for each day of the quarantine.
- Gather artifacts showing the weather or season, and tape or glue them into your journal (For example: The flowers are beginning to bloom in my yard! Here is a petal that fell from
one of my family’s tulips!)
- Dress up as a recorder, write a news cast script, and film yourself as a reporter. Challenge: use iMovie or DoInk (Green screen app) on a smart device to try editing your video! Send your teacher your video, and keep your written script in your time capsule.
- Interview a family member, neighbor, doctor, teacher, friend, or more about their experience. Write down your questions, and write down their answers. Reminder: You can
interview digitally! (Use Google Hangouts, Facetime, or even email (with a parent’s permission).
- Create a timeline showing the events of the COVID-19 outbreak. You can use articles, online resources, and help from your parents to gather the information you need.
- Film videos of you & your family’s experience (Ex: Tell your feelings, show how your family is passing the time (Filmed video of you and/or your family’s experience (Ex: Tell your feelings, show how your family is passing the time, show how your family’s routines
have been effected You may choose to store the videos where ever your parent suggests. If your parent says it is ok, you can also share your video to this PUBLIC time capsule
flipgrid!
Public: flipgrid.com/covid19timecapsule
- Make a painting showing something about your experience (Ex: Paint a portrait of your work space for school,, your neighborhood, feelings you have during this virus, etc.)
