Antonio Martín

What do you think a ethnic group is?

What do you think a lordship could be?

Community Societies• Agricultural societies were organized as a strong

community. Local communities or ayllu worked together and kept the collective ownership of land and production. Their leaders were in charge of leading productive activities and trading in chiefdoms (cazicazgos). They and their families had great social importance.

• In agricultural societies, especially in Highlands, the varied ecological zones and microclimates were used to achieve a varied production.

• The communities obtained, in the wilderness, hunting animals, grass for domesticating animals, straw huts and medicinal plants. In the valleys: corn, potatoes, beans, toctes, taxa, capulies and vegetable fibers were farmed to make clothing.

• Subtropical forests provided them with peanuts, chili, coca, guayabas, guabas and other fruits.

The Lordship Ethnics

• With the growth of societies, a social group of distinguished governors (the lords) was formed. These lordships exerted authority and transmitted it by inheritance. The lords or caciques were grouped into larger units: the ethnic lordships, led by higher lords or caciques. Their ways of association were by warriors and family alliances.

The ethnic lordships were complex political units, but they didn’t become what today is called state. They settled in large regional territories where there were several villages. Although there were no borders, they consolidated spaces for permanent influence. They made important constructions such as tolas (artificial mounds) in northern Ecuador.
