Charge/Church Conference Those of you who have been Methodist for anytime at all know that each
Fall a Charge/Church Conference is held for the purpose of preparing for the
upcoming year. According to Paragraph 246.2 of The BOOK of DISCIPLINE
of The United Methodist Church, (The DISCIPLINE) “the membership of the
Charge Conference shall be all members of the Church Council (formally
Administrative Board)…together with retired ordained ministers and retired
diaconal ministers who elect to hold their membership in said charge
conference.” However, The DISCIPLINE further states in Paragraph 248,
The Church Conference—to encourage broader participation by
members of the church, the charge conference may be convened as the
church conference, extending the vote to all professing members of the
local church present at such meetings.
The District Superintendent sets the time of the Charge/Church Conference
and the church sets the place. Our District Superintendent, Dr. Brian Clark, has
set the time of our Conference for October 25, 2017 at 7:30 pm in the
Sanctuary. Along with other items from the District Superintendent, the following four
items require action by the Church Conference: 1) Recommendation for
Ministry (for any person pursuing ordained ministry). 2) Lay Servant Annual
Report (For laity who have met the standards set forth for a local church lay
servant and/or for certified lay servants and certified lay ministers.) 3) Set the
compensation of the pastor for the coming year and 4) Elect officers for 2018
(Nominations will come from the Committee on Nominations, but nominations
can also be made from the floor).
Again, the Church Conference is OPEN to ALL full members and I
strongly encourage all of you to be present for this meeting on October 25,
2017 at 7:30 p.m. in the Sanctuary.
A REMINDER for those who serve on the Church Council (formerly the
Administrative Board): Our next meeting will be on October 22, 2017 at 7:30
pm, following the Children’s Choir Concert. We will meet in the Fellowship
Hall. The 2018 budget will be presented for adoption; and you will receive the
list from the Committee on Nominations of those persons nominated to serve
as church officers in 2018. This will be for information only as election will
take place at the Church Conference. Other items needed for the preparation of
Church Conference will also be presented. All Church Council members will
also receive notification/reminder prior to the Church Council.
I look forward to greeting you each week at the “Church Conference”
place, where we all work together in furthering God’s Kingdom.

Upcoming Trips for Older Adults Tuesday, October 10th — Fall Foliage Trip on Blue Ridge Scenic Railway...We will be leaving the church at 8 AM. Must have at least 10 people. Prepaid ticket cost is $55 per person ($60 for those under age 65). Thursday, October 26th — Apple Trip & Lunch...We will leave the church at 9 AM. Sign up on the bulletin board in the hallway near the Nursery or contact Shelly Epperson at 770-867-4594, ext. 20 or sepperson@winderfirstumc.com for more information.
Pipe Organ Repair Update We have hit a small obstacle in the process of repairing our pipe organ. Though we have raised enough funding to have the organ repaired by the company whose bid we had initially selected, we have since learned that that company is having trouble and may be in danger of going out of business in the near future. Because of the risk that this presents, we need to raise an additional amount of $5,190 so that we can pursue a second company’s bid. Please continue to make contributions to this fund.
Children’s Sunday School Teachers Needed We are still looking for teachers to serve on a rotational basis for the 3rd-5th grade Children’s Sunday School class. We currently have someone who is teaching every other week, but we still need one or two other teachers. Please contact Dwight in the church office if you are interested.

Join the Choir NOW to Be a Part of Our
Christmas Cantata! “Lead Me Back to Bethlehem” by Pepper Choplin is a beautiful Christmas cantata featuring a great combination of traditional music for Christmas, newly composed songs, and very familiar tunes sung with Christmas lyrics. The Chancel Choir will begin working on this cantata for Christmas soon...so please join us! We need more singers for the Sundays of Advent and Christmas.

OCTOBER 2017 “Don’t just go to church … be the church.”
LOCAL MISSION FOCUS … BOYS AND GIRLS CLUB Hello Church Family,
I would like to take a moment to tell you some things you may not know about the Boys & Girls Club. First, I
don't know how many of you know that The Club was founded by our own Buddy Ouzts because he saw a need for
children to have a safe place to go after school. He saw too many on the streets getting into trouble and had the
foresight to do something about it! Thanks to this foresight, we have the Club we have today!
Thanks to all the people who give their support/time and money. Without any one of those pieces, it would not
work. Seven years ago, the BCCBM had money to buy food and no one to prepare it; that is when our church's great
volunteers stepped up. We prepare meals on Tuesdays & Thursdays. White Oak Springs Baptist Church does
Wednesdays & Fridays and Winder First Baptist Church does Mondays. After the feeding program started, we saw
the children's grade point average increase (depending on the child) anywhere from 6 to 10%. We all know it's hard to
learn when you are hungry!
The Club recently received a Grant called The 1st Century Grant. It provides for grades 1-5. They now have
certified teachers or paraprofessionals to give them after school instruction, help with homework and specialized
tutoring. This gives the children a much needed edge. However, the slots are limited to 125 in grades 1-5. With this
help, they have freed up resources for the Middle and High school.
In closing I would like to THANK all the volunteers who make sandwiches, donate time and donate money. It
truly takes all those pieces to make it work!
God Bless, ~Pam Sharpton
Financial Contributions Needed: Make checks payable to WFUMC
and mark “Boys and Girls Club designated fund”.
OCTOBER DONATIONS FOR MISSION BINS Throughout the month of October we will be collecting donations of paper products and cleaning supplies for the
Wimberly Center here in Winder, GA.
The Wimberly Center is located in the former Winder Barrow Middle School and serves as a “One Stop Shop” for
many services offered to those in need in our community. Currently housed within this facility are:
♥ Boys & Girls Club ♥ Action, Inc.
♥ Adult Literacy Barrow ♥ Piedmont CASA
♥ Barrow Ministry Village ♥ Barrow Family Connection
♥ Various educational programs by the Winder Housing Authority
All these vital ministries need everyday supplies such as paper towels, Kleenex, toilet paper, napkins, wipes with
bleach, surface cleaners, etc. Please place your donation in the Mission Bins located in the nursery hallway behind the
Sanctuary and in the Fellowship Hall.
The food pantry can always use non-perishable food items ... especially needed are canned meats, boxed meals and kid
friendly items. If you have perishable items (like fresh fruits, vegetables, meats, etc.),
please contact the church office at 770-867-4594 to make arrangements to get these items to the food pantry.
DO NOT place perishable items in the collection bins at church.

Dear FUMC, Thanks to all of you for your continued support through prayer and letters/notes. I am on a journey with God’s guidance. I am following the phrase, “Bloom where you are planted.” I just got through participating in a small Bible study group. We are studying the book of Romans. My favorite is Romans 5 - verses 1-5. I read my Bible daily and pray for all of mankind. I feel blessed that I have a loving and forgiving God, a loving and forgiving family, and loving and forgiving friends. Thanks to all of you. ~In Christ, Ron Saunders Dear Church Family, Judy was really blessed with friends and relatives that meant so much to her. Will & Tara, Marie, Michael, Michaela Judy, Matthew and I will always remember your thoughts and prayers. Thank you especially for the meal you provided. God bless you all. ~ Bob Loftin
