Why is Oxygen valuable ?

• BIG IDEA: Humans need oxygen to survive.

• Plants breath in oxygen • It is also worth

mentioning that water is a compound of hydrogen and oxygen (H2O) and that water is absolutely necessary for virtually all life as we know it.

Who/ When discovered?

• Discovered by: Joseph Priestley of England and Karl Scheele of Sweden

• When: 1774• "oxygen" - which comes

from a Greek word that means “acid-former”.

Where on Earth is oxygen found?• Nearly half of all the atoms in the Earth are oxygen atoms.

• Oxygen makes up about 21% of the Earth’s atmosphere.

• Oxygen is the most common element on the surface of the Earth, occurring as oxygen gas, in water, and oxide minerals, or in combination with elements in silicates, carbonates, phosphates, sulfates, and many others.

• Oxygen also makes up water and water covers more than 50% of the Earth.

Characteristics of Oxygen• Oxygen can exist in a number of physical forms. The

most commonly found state of oxygen is the diatomic form and the triplet state. The diatomic form is molecular oxygen and the triplet state of commonly called ozone.

• Ozone (O3), a highly active compound with a name derived from the Greek word for 'I smell', is formed by the action of an electrical discharge or ultraviolet light on oxygen.

• It exists in all three forms- solid, liquid and gases.• Nine isotopes of oxygen are known and natural oxygen

is a mixture of three isotopes.

Physical Properties of Oxygen

• It has a cubic crystal structure.

• Oxygen gas is colorless, odorless, and tasteless.

• Boiling Point :- 183oC

• Melting Point :- 218.4oC

Chemical Properties of Oxygen

• Atomic number: 8

• Atomic mass: 15.999

• Density: 1.429 kg/m3 at 20°C

• Melting point: -219 °C

• Boiling point: -183 °C

• Isotopes: 4

Interesting Facts

• More than half of the oxygen produced in the United States is used in manufactured metals.

• Oxygen doesn’t burn• One important use if oxygen is

in medicine.• All acids do not contain

oxygen, although some do.

Conclusion

• When you consider the full importance of oxygen it becomes clear that it is the single most important element in life.

• Thank you for watching this presentation.
