1. DISCOVER YOUR BRAND • What are your goals? • What makes you unique? • What are your passions? • How are you currently perceived? • What do your online profiles say about you? • What does Google say about you? • What do you want to achieve? • What is your market and target audience? • What is your communication style? • What is your niche?

Presentation Notes
Before you sign up for your first social media account, you need to decide what parts of your life you want to share and how to best reach your audience. Develop a brand personality that is consistent with your demographics' interests and value

2. SHAPE YOUR TONE

Presentation Notes
A good way to ensure a consistent personality for your brand is to come up with 3 words to describe the tone used in each and every post you share. Personally I use the words “inspirational”, “easy to read” and “informative” as a guideline.

3. DON’T OVERCOMMIT

Presentation Notes
Having too many social media profiles can lead to you missing out on mentions or questions from your fan base. By not being readily available, your reputation could be on the line when your fans are not able to connect with you.

4. PERSONALIZE EACH PLATFORM

Presentation Notes
Take time to customize each post to its own platform. Auto-sharing can mess up your overall branding goal because each platform has its own limitations. Using each platform’s native functionality will help you engage your audience to a higher degree.

5. PRESENT YOURSELF, NOT JUST YOUR BRAND

Presenter
Presentation Notes
People want to engage with other people, not just another faceless company. This goes double if you’re a freelancer or a sole proprietor. You can include personal branding elements in your photos, banners and backgrounds, but keep your avatar all about you.

6. GROW A FOLLOWING THROUGH CONSISTENCY

Presenter
Presentation Notes
Your fans are following you based on the track record you have set through previous posts. It’s important to continue the same pattern of content or else you may notice a drop off in followers.

7. TIMING IS EVERYTHING

Presenter
Presentation Notes
If you only post when you feel like it, you’re missing out on an opportunity to optimize your content. People are routine by nature, so if you’re able to provide new and engaging content at the same time every week then people can form a habit to include you in their schedule.

8. CURATE YOUR WORK

Presenter
Presentation Notes
Treat your social media profiles as an extension of your portfolio where you only present your best work. As tempting as it can be to put all of your work out there for the world to see, think twice before you constantly upload onto social media.

9. REWARD YOUR FOLLOWERS

Presenter
Presentation Notes
Treat your social media profiles as an extension of your portfolio where you only present your best work. As tempting as it can be to put all of your work out there for the world to see, think twice before you constantly upload onto social media.

10. DON’T OVERSELL YOURSELF

Presenter
Presentation Notes
Always make an effort to have online interactions with your fans that are both meaningful and informative. Limit your interactions to when you’ve got something great to say. Don’t spam your followers, or you’ll risk being seen as another superficial salesperson. All of these social networks are opportunities for you to make a unique connection with your audience. Social media platforms allow you to break away from your logo and share a more personal angle of your brand.  It takes time and a bit of perseverance, but if you use social media to build real connections, new clients will take notice.
