This presentation is based on the book “The 7 habits of highly effective people” by Stephen R. Covey

Need for a new level of thinking??

• Albert Einstein observed “The significant problems we face cannot be solved at the same Level of thinking we were at, When we created them..

• The problems cannot be solved at the superficial level we see them. We need a deeper level of thinking. This new level of thinking is what the 7 habits is about.

• It is a principle-centered character-based inside-out approach to personal and interpersonal effectiveness.

The intersection of knowledge, skill, and desire = HABIT

DEFINING HABITS

P/PC BALANCE

• The Seven Habits are also called habits of effectiveness.• They are based on principles designed to bring long term

benefits.• These are in harmony with the law called the “P/PC

BALANCE”

P= Production PC= Production capacity

Stages Of Maturity Continuum

1. Dependence: The paradigm under which we are born, relying upon others to take care of us.

2. Independence: The paradigm under which we can make our own decisions and take care of ourselves.

3. Interdependence: The paradigm under which we cooperate to achieve something that cannot be achieved independently.

GENERAL CLASSIFICATION OF THE SEVEN HABITS

7HABITS

HABIT 7

PRIVATE VICTORY

• HABIT 1: BE PROACTIVE

• HABIT 2: BEGIN WITH THE END IN MIND

• HABIT 3: PUT FIRST THINGS FIRST

HABIT 1: BE PROACTIVE

• People are generally of 2 types : Proactive and reactive.

• We are responsible for our own lives. Our behavior is a function of our decisions, not our conditions.

• Responsibility ("response-ability") the ability to choose your response according to various situations.

PROACTIVE

• Driven by carefully thought about selected and internalized values.

• Uses “idea building” phrases such as Let's look at our alternatives, I can choose a different approach, I control my own feelings, I can, I will, I prefer.

REACTIVE

• Driven by feelings, by circumstances, by conditions, by their environment.

• Uses “Idea killing” phrases like There's nothing I can do. That's just the way I am. He makes me so mad. They won't allow that. I have to do that. I can't. I must. If only

REACTIVE

PROACTIVE

HABIT 2: BEGIN WITH END IN MIND

• Begin with the End in Mind means to begin each day, task, or project with a clear vision of your desired direction and destination, and then continue by flexing your proactive muscles to make things happen.

• Based on the principle that all things are created twice: first initial blueprint and then the final product.

A Personal Mission Statement

• The most effective way to practice Begin with the End in Mind is to develop a Personal Mission Statement.

• It focuses on What you want to be, What you want to do and on the values or principles upon which being and doing are based.

• Personal mission statement begins at the very center of our Circle of Influence, whatever is there becomes the source of our security, guidance, wisdom and power.

Our Brain - An analysis

• The left hemisphere - the more logical/verbal • The right hemisphere- the more intuitive and creative

one.

• Although, today’s world concentrates more on the left hemisphere but ideally a person must be trained to use both these sides of the brain.

• Two Ways to Tap the Right Brain: (1)Expand Perspective (2) Visualization and Affirmation

Habit 3:Put First Things First

• “Things which matter most must never be at the mercy of things which matter least” – Goeth

• The key to time management is to schedule your priorities.

• Its effective self-management

• This habit is very effective where Habits 1 and 2 come together.

Time Management

• Focusing on Quadrant I, it keeps getting bigger and bigger.

• Quadrant II is the heart of effective personal management.

• Effective people keep out of III and IV (Urgent or not, they are not important).

PUBLIC VICTORY

• HABIT 4: Think Win-Win

• HABIT 5: Seek First to understand,

Then to Be Understood

• HABIT 6: Synergize

PUBLIC VICTORY

• Private victory precedes public victory.

• Self-mastery and self-discipline are the foundation of good relationships with others.

• The techniques and skills that really make a difference in human interaction are the ones that almost naturally flow from a truly independent character.

The Emotional Bank Account

• An Emotional Bank account is a metaphor that describes the amount of trust that's been built up in a relationship

• The major deposits are 1) Understanding the Individual

2) Attending to the Little Things3) Keeping Commitments4) Clarifying Expectations 5) Showing Personal Integrity6) Apologizing Sincerely When You Make a Withdrawal

HABIT 4: THINK WIN-WIN

• The paradigms of human interaction are win-lose, lose-win, lose-lose, win, and WIN-WIN or No Deal.

• WIN-WIN is a frame of mind and heart that constantly seeks mutual benefit in all human interactions.

The five interdependent dimensions of life begins with our character and moves toward relationships.

Agreements between parties are the results of these relationships. For win-win to work, the systems have to support it. And it involves process which is the route to win-win.

• Win-Win attitude possesses three vital character traits:

1. Integrity: sticking with your true feelings, values, and commitments

2. Maturity: expressing your ideas and feelings with courage and consideration for the ideas and feelings of others

3. Abundance Mentality: believing there is plenty for everyone

HABIT 5:Seek First to understand,

Then to be Understood

• Communication is the most important skill in life. It is not merely about transfer of words or numbers from one individual to another but about understanding IDEAS.

• For effective interaction with a person, to influence a person, we first need to understand the person.

• We are trained to read, write and speak but listening is usually neglected.

• “Diagnose before you Prescribe”.

Four Autobiographical Responses

• Evaluating: Judging and then either agree or disagree.

• Probing: Asking questions from your own frame of reference.

• Advising: Giving counsel, advice, and solutions to problems.

• Interpreting: analyzing other’s motives and behaviors based on your own experiences.

HABIT 6: Synergize

• “The whole is greater than the sum of its parts”; (i.e. 1 + 1 > 2)

• Synergy is the foundation for a Principle-Centered Leadership.

• The challenge is to apply the principles of creative cooperation in our social interactions.

Synergy and Communication

• Synergistic third alternatives are often better for both parties than their original alternatives.

• Valuing the various differences between people is the essence of synergy -- the mental, the emotional, the psychological differences between people.

• Synergy can be seen everywhere in Nature. Ecology is a word which basically describes the synergism in nature

THE RENEWAL

• HABIT 7: Sharpening the saw

HABIT 7: Sharpening the saw

• Renewal is the principle and the process that empowers us to move on an upward spiral of growth and change, of continuous improvement.

• The 7th habit is about preserving and enhancing the greatest asset you have – “YOURSELF”.

• Four Dimensions of Renewal are physical, spiritual, mental, and social/emotional.
