What is a Biome?

• A Biome is a habitat in a certain place. It is determined by the climate in that specific place. The Taiga is the biome of the needle leaf forest. Living in the Taiga is cold and lonely. Coldness and food shortages make everything difficult, mostly in the winter. Some of the animals in the Taiga hibernate in the winter, some fly south if they can, and some just cooperate with the environment, which is very difficult.

What does a Taiga look like?

• The Taiga is flat, cold, and lonely. It is usually very snowy also.

• There are many caniferious trees in this area.

What producers grow there?

• Not very many can live in the harsh conditions, but there are a few that can. These few are….

• Balsam Fir

• Black Spruce

• Douglas-Fir

• Eastern Red Cedar

• Jack Pine

What Consumers live there?

• American Black Bear• Bald Eagle• Bobcat• Gray Wolf• River Otter• Snow Shoe Rabbit• Long-eared Owl• Red Fox

Where is the Biome located?

• The Biome stretches over areas of Europe, Asia, North America, and near the top of the world, below the tundra.

Temperature Ranges

• Ranges from 65 degrees F. to 70 degrees F.

• Winter= low -65 degrees F. High= 30 degrees F.

• Summer low= 30 degrees F. High= 70 degrees F.

• For half the year the temperature is below freezing.

How much precipitation is there?

• There is about 40 inches each year.

• (mostly rain) Summer between 10 and 20 inches

• (Mostly Snow) Winter between 20 and 40 inches.

What adaptations have evolved there?

• Long thin waxy needles. The wax is for protection against freezing temps.

• Evergreens don’t lose their leaves.

• Dark color allows them to absorb more heat from the sun.

• Heavier Fur on animals

What is soil like there?

• Sometimes the soil is very wet, and at times it can be extremely hard.
