SYMBIOSIS

Created by Kandy Powers

What is symbiosis? A relationship between

two species. It may be helpful or harmful.

Quickwrite• In your science notebook, give two examples of how you think two living

things can:

#1. Benefit, or be helpful, to one another.AND

#2. Be harmful, or hurt, one another.

Three Types of Symbiosis

ParasitismCommensalism

Mutualism

ParasitismOne organism is helped, while the other is harmed.

TAPEWORM: lives in the intestines of

animals and humans.

Head

CommensalismNeither organism is harmed, but one benefits…they live peacefully.

Epiphytes, also known as “air plants” live on the bark of trees.

MutualismBoth participating species benefit.

Aphid and Ant

The aphid gets protection from the ant against predatory insects like ladybugs.

The Hippo and The TurtleA baby hippo, near certain death, was found near the ocean

in Africa. It was rescued and placed in a reserve area, where it immediately began following around a huge turtle. The turtle hissed at him first, but finally gave in and let the baby hippo hang out. In days, they became inseparable. They ate, bathed in a nearby spring, and slept together.

What kind of symbiotic relationship do they have?
