DESCRIPTION

I was caught unawares recently by a question. Someone asked me "what makes a successful person?". Though I gave an answer for that moment and it seemed to satisfy the query, I remained dissatisfied. The question kept coming to mind, and very often, over the next few days. As I pondered over it and analysed the world around, people, lives and situations, I settled upon four fundamentals that would define a successful person.

• I was caught unawares recently by a question. Someone asked me "what makes a successful person?". Though I gave an answer for that moment and it seemed to satisfy the query, I remained dissatisfied.

• The question kept coming to mind, and very often, over the next few days. As I pondered over it and analysed the world around, people, lives and situations, I settled upon four fundamentals that would define a successful person.

1) Does he enjoy peace and happiness? 2) Is he healthy for his age?3) Does he enjoy financial stability?      4) Does he enjoy a good reputation?

• If he satisfies these, then he can be called a 'successful person'.

• I came upon this conclusion after much observation of the world and societies around. There is a popular misconception that money is a major factor to happiness. In my opinion it plays only one fourth of a role in a person's life.

• There is a book that says "A man is happy if he is satisfied with what he has". All the money in the world cannot buy happiness. There are people who are immensely rich but have troubles that don't allow them a good night's sleep. Does this qualify as success?

• Then there are people who spend a great part of their time in the pursuit of money that they neglect their health. Life style diseases like blood pressure, diabetes, spondylitis and other stress related diseases are their constant companions. Does this qualify as success?

• There are those that make money through unfair, unjust and sometimes unlawful means. They can tick off three out of four points on the checklist, but would not qualify for the fourth.

• Making it big through unlawful and underhanded deeds like smuggling, black marketeering or corruption is not a feat or exemplary in any way.

• Life is a careful balancing act of these four factors. It requires a constant and consistent endeavour to achieve it. All the best!
