CONJUGATING STEM CHANGE VERBS

What’s the ‘stem’ of a verb?

The STEM (or root) of a verb is the part of a verb that has no endings on it.

EJEMPLO= habl, com, escrib This is where there is a special change in

these type of verbs, in ADDITION to regular endings in conjugation.

TYPES of Stem Change (Boot) Verbs

There are 4 Types1. E IE2. EI

1. E IEThe ‘E’ in the stem

changes to ‘IE’ in all forms EXCEPT NOSOTROS

and VOSOTROS.

EJEMPLO- Pensar (to think, plan on)

E IE pensar

PIENSO PENSAMOSPIENSAS PENSÁISPIENSA PIENSAN

2. E IThe ‘E’ in the stem

changes to ‘I’ in all forms EXCEPT NOSOTROS and

VOSOTROS.

EJEMPLO- servir (to serve)

SIRVO SERVIMOSSIRVES SERVÍSSIRVE SIRVEN

3. OUEThe ‘O’ in the stem

changes to ‘UE’ in all forms EXCEPT NOSOTROS

and VOSOTROS.

EJEMPLO-PODER(to be able)

4. UUEThe ‘U’ in the stem

changes to ‘UE’ in all forms EXCEPT NOSOTROS

and VOSOTROS.
