• Mostarticlesandmonographssingleauthored.

• Thesissupervisionoftenresultsinstudentpublicationsbutmostlywithnoexpectationofauthorshiponthepartofthesupervisorormembersofthesupervisorycommittee.

• Frequently,ethicalissuesarenotsomuchaboutauthorshipastheyareabout:excessiveself-citation;plagiarism,redundantpublicationsandtheproblemofcitationin‘receivedwisdom.’

SocialSciences• Moresimilaritieswithsciencesgenerally.• Considerableworkdoneonresearchintegrity,publication

ethicsandauthorship,amongprofessionalorganizations,suchas,theAPA,ASA,CSA,CPA,etc.

• Withrespecttoclarityandtransparencyaboutauthorialroles,guidelinesliketheICMJEortheAmericanPsychologicalAssociationarehelpfulinidentifyingthesubstantiverolesthatmustbepresentforascribingauthorshipwithintheSocialSciences.

• Particularlywithrespecttostudents,butalsoforthesakeofallresearchersinaproject,thebestpracticeofidentifyingrolesandresponsibilitiesinwriting(withagreement)iscrucialtoavoidingdisputeslater.

• GiventheuniqueculturalfactorsinsomeSocialScienceresearch,uniquecommonunderstandingamongresearchersandtheparticipantsofresearchneedstobeidentifiedupfront.

• E.g.,manyAboriginalcommunitiesrequirethatmembersofthecommunityareauthorsinallresearchthattakesplaceinthosecommunitiesandalsoassertthattheycanvetopublicationsiftheybelievethefindingstobeharmfultothecommunities.

• Reasonablyandforlegalandlabourrelationsfactors,universitiesconductinvestigationswithrespecttomisconductinpublications.

• Thiscanbeanunusuallylongandprotractedprocesswhichleavesthejournaleithermakinginterimprocessannouncementsormakingdecisionsindependentofuniversityinvestigations.
