Staff iPad Setup Procedure

Do not begin this iPad setup unless you have both your school network ID and password AND

your Apple ID and password.

If you do not have an Apple ID and password, please refer to the message in your school

conference for directions on creating an Apple ID.

IMPORTANT NOTE

initial iPad setupSECTION 1

Instructions

Turn on iPad and slide to begin setup.

Instructions

Select English as the language

Instructions

Scroll the country list to locate and tap on Canada.

If you mess up, tap Back in the top left corner.

Instructions

Tap on SJSD_Secure to continue...

Instructions

Enter your personal SJSD network user ID and password.

(This is the ID and password you use to log into your computer at school.)

Instructions

Once you have entered your SJSD network ID and password, tap Join to connect to the Wifi network.

You will be prompted to accept a Wifi certificate.

Tap Accept to continue.

Instructions

Wait until the checkmark appears next to SJSD_Secure before you proceed.

Once the checkmark appears, you are connected to the Wifi network.

Tap Next to proceed.

Your iPad will now connect with Apple’s servers for device activation.

Be patient... It may take a minute or so to complete this step.

Once activation is complete, you will automatically advance to the next screen.

Tap on Enable Location Services

You’ll now see a notice that St. James-Assiniboia SD will automatically configure your iPad.

Click Next to Proceed.

IMPORTANTIf you do not receive this notice on your iPad, please alert your technician.

Do NOT continue the setup procedure from this point on if you do not receive this notice. The iPad will not operate as intended unless your receive this notice.

(There’s a long explanation as to why you may not see this screen that I won’t bore you with at this time.)

You will be prompted to enter your SJSD network user ID and password again.

IMPORTANTIf you are not prompted to enter your network credentials again on your iPad, please alert your technician.

Do NOT continue the setup procedure from this point on if you do not receive this screen. The iPad will not operate as intended unless your receive this notice.

(There’s another long explanation as to why you may not see this screen that I won’t bore you with at this time.)

You’re now done the initial section of the iPad setup and configuration.

Tap Get Started.

The Home Screen will appear where you will immediately be prompted to set a Passcode.

Don’t panic when you don’t see any of the standard apps on your iPad... Pages, Keynote, Numbers, iMovie, GarageBand, etc...

This year, the process for distributing and installing apps has all changed. Apps are now installed on request by the user.

Read on... It will all be explained in the upcoming sections.

iTunes & App Store settingsSECTION 2

Instructions

On the first page of Apps, tap on Settings.

In the Settings menu on the left hand side of the screen, tap on iTunes & App Store.

Check to make sure you are in fact signed into the App Store. Is your Apple displayed here?

If not, enter your Apple ID and password and tap Sign In.

Once you are signed into the App Store, turn on the Apps switch.

If the switch was already on, you can advance from here to Section 3.

When you turn on the Apps switch...

You may be presented with this screen indicating that the iPad is already associated with another Apple ID.

If you receive this screen, tap Transfer.

And, you may be prompted to enter the Apple ID password for the Apple ID associated with this iPad.

Once, you have ensured that the Apps switch is turned on...

Tap the Home Button to return to the Home Screen.

enrolling into the SJSDapp deployment system

SECTION 3

Instructions

Swipe to the second page of Apps and tap on App Catalog.

The screen will be blank for a moment while the App catalog loads...

Instructions

The App Catalog contains links to recommended free apps as well as links to SJSD purchased apps that are associated with your user group... Early Years, Middle Years and Senior Years.

We first need to enroll your Apple ID into the Airwatch server...

Tap on the Purchased Tab at the top of the page.

Then, tap on the Install button next to Book Creator.

Note: Some apps are licensed by level and may not appear in the App Catalog for all staff. Sock Puppets and Popplet, for example, are licensed for Early Years staff and students only.

If you are presented with this screen...

Tap on Accept Invite.

If, however, you are presented with this screen:

You are already enrolled in the Managed Distribution system. You may advance directly to Section 4.

Enter your Apple ID password and tap OK.

Note: It may a moment for the next screen to appear. Be patient.

Scroll to the bottom of the Terms and Conditions window and tap Agree

You’ll land back at the iTunes App Store.

Now, tap the Home Button...

If Apple prompts you to download their Apps, tap Not Now...

Now that you are enrolled, we can download our first app from the App Catalog.

Tap on App Catalog, again.

Tap on the Purchased Tab at the top of the page.

Then, tap on the Install button next to Book Creator.

You’ll receive the following notice...

If you were to tap the home button at this point...

You’ll see Book Creator in the process of downloading and installing itself on the iPad...

Instructions

And when complete, Book Creator will be installed on the iPad and ready to use.

Repeat this process and install any or all of the apps available in the Purchased section of the App Catalog.

installing other iOS appsSECTION 4

Instructions

Follow the same procedure as in the previous section to install any of the free or paid apps applicable for your school level.

To install any additional free apps or apps you had previously purchased using your Apple ID, tap on the App Store...

The App Store will open.

If you receive a notice about downloading all the Apple Apps, click Not Now.

At the bottom of the page, tap on Purchased...

The Purchased page will display all Free and Purchased Apps associated with your Apple ID.

You can choose to view ALL apps, or just the Apps that are not on this iPad.

If the app in question was an app you had previously paid for, you will not be charged again to download and install it on the iPad.

To install any of these previously purchased apps on the iPad, just tap on the download icon next to the desired app.

installing & configuring FirstClassSECTION 5

Instructions

To install the FirstClass app on your iPad, start by tapping on the App Catalog...

On the App Catalog page...

Tap on the Public Tab...

Then, tap on the Install button for the FirstClass Mobile app.

You may be prompted to enter your Apple ID password.

Once you receive the indication that the App download will begin, tap on the Home button.

When the download is complete, tap on the FirstClass app...

Click OK to allow FirstClass to send you push notifications...

Complete this screen as follows:

UserID: (Your FirstClass user ID.... just the part before the @sjsd.net)

Then, tap Login.

Provided, you have protected your iPad with a passcode, you are free to select SAVE on this screen.

This will save you from having to enter your FirstClass password every time you log in.

If you have entered all information correctly, you’ll be logged into FirstClass and your desktop will be displayed.

To log out, tap the Logout button in the top left corner, and then tap on logout from the main screen...

iCloud settingsSECTION 6

Tap on Settings...

Tap on iCloud...

Depending on how you had your iPad set up last year, the switches for the various iCloud features may be on or off.

Turning on the various switches allows you to sync content via iCloud with your Mac or other iOS devices using your Apple ID.

You’ll want to make sure that your iPad is set to back up. Ensure that Backup is set to On.

You’ll notice that “Storage” reports the amount of available storage remaining in your iCloud account.

The device backups being stored in iCloud will be displayed.

Ensure that you have deleted last year’s backup to free up space.

The backup ending in “iph” is your iPhone. Keep that.

Of course, you’ll want to keep this iPad’s backup.

But the 3.4 GB backup titled “28zanderpad” is how we named devices last year. That is a backup from your iPad from last year,. You no longer need that backup.

Set the Auto-Lock timeout to 10 or 15 minutes as desired.

Many users find the keyboard clicks annoying. Here’s how to turn them off.

In Settings, on the left-hand side... Tap on Sounds.

On the right-hand side, turn off the Keyboard Clicks switch.

setting a custom lockscreenSECTION 10

Instructions

The idea of setting a custom lockscreen is that in the event you leave your iPad somewhere, the lockscreen will display your name and contact info. Something like this...

From the home screen, tap on the Safari app in the dock...

The Safari web browser will launch and display the default bookmarks, along with any other sites you may have book marked last year.

Tap in the address box and enter the following URL in the Safari address box...

bit.ly/sjsdlock... and then click the Go button.

On the custom lock screen page, tap on the link that reads, “Click here to create a custom lockscreen for your iPad”

On line 1, enter your first and last name.

On line 2, enter your school name.

On line 3, enter your school phone#.

Tap “Create Badge”

Tap on the badge style you prefer... the Apple logo or the Cloud logo.

Save the image to the iPad’s Camera Roll as per the instructions on the iPad screen...

Then click the Home Button...

The custom lock screen we just saved in Safari was saved into the Photos app.

Tap on Photos...

The lock screen we saved will appear in the Photo library on the iPad.

Tap the lockscreen image...

Now, tap on the Share icon...

The Share menu will appear.

Tap on Use as Wallpaper...

In the bottom right corner, tap on Perspective Zoom to turn it off...

Pinch the image, to shrink it to its original size...

And then centre the image horizontally on the iPad screen.

Now, tap Set Lock Screen.

When completed setting the lock screen, you will return to the Photos screen...

Click the Home button to return to the Home screen.

To see the custom lockscreen, turn the iPad off and back on again.

The idea behind the lockscreen is that it will allow you to quickly identify your iPad.

To set a passcode on your iPad, tap on Settings...

Instructions

On the left-hand side, tap on Passcode.

Then, on the right-hand side, tap on “Turn Passcode On”

Now, enter a 4 digit number you are not likely to forget.

You will be prompted to enter it a second time.

Now, when you open your iPad, you will be required to enter that passcode.

That’s it... You’re all done!

You are now ready to startusing your iPad!
