TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION "Octave" comes from the Latin word for "eight," and since eight is one step beyond seven, the number of days in a week, it has long been seen as a symbol of perfection, completion, and new beginnings. Early Christians called Sunday the "eighth day," since it was the day after the Sabbath and a day of resurrected life, the Lord's Day. By the seventh century, people regarded the eight days after Easter Sunday as one great day, an octave, one glorious feast when people were forbidden to fast or kneel. In the seventh century, Pentecost acquired an Octave, too. Christmas didn't claim the honor of a continuous feast, but it did get an Octave Day. January 1 is the oldest Marian feast, the Octave of Christmas. It was originally a feast of the motherhood of Mary, although for centuries until 1969 it was called the Feast of the Circumcision. Our reformed calendar follows the earlier tradition of celebrating Mary as Mother of God. --James Field, Copyright (c) J. S. Paluch Co.

A NOTE FROM THE PASTOR
Happy New Year! It is with great joy that I announce that Fr. David Halaiko, who has retired as founding pastor of Nativity of Our Lord Parish where he served for 39 years, will be in residence at our parish as a retired priest. I have known him for more than 40 years. I look forward to his sharing our vast
parish rectory. He is a man of deep faith and great care for others. He has a special love for church history and I’m sure will be probing into our parish heritage going back to 1837. Since he has retired from diocesan responsibilities, he will not be on our staff in an active way. He is more than willing to preside at various Masses here in a way similar to what Fr. Joe Kraker in his retirement has done. Next weekend, January 7-8, as we celebrate Friendship Weekend with fellowship and food after each Mass, you will have the opportunity to meet him and welcome him to this vibrant parish community.
Happy New Day! What if we were to live each day as an experience of being “renewed” by our Lord in and through our daily life experiences? A friend shared with me that we should consider not saying to people, “Have a good day.” Rather we should state, “Make it a good day.” This reminds us that rooted in our faith, we often have the ability to determine what kind of day we will have by the attitude we choose. Pope Francis, in his apostolic exhortation, The Gospel of Joy, reminds us that believing in and centering our lives on the person and message of Jesus Christ is a solid foundation for experiencing greater happiness and peace. Each time we gather to celebrate the Eucharist is an opportunity to be renewed by the Lord speaking to our hearts through the Scriptures and nourishing us with his real, merciful, loving presence.
Remember also that on first Saturday mornings, 9 am - Noon, (this Saturday, January 7) we have Eucharistic adoration in the church. Quiet prayer, centered in the Lord’s real presence, can refresh and guide our human spirit, strengthened by the Holy Spirit within.

FAMILY PERSPECTIVES
Mary, the Mother of God and our Blessed Mother is The Model Disciple for all of us. The Gospels portray her as having a heart always open to the Lord and His will. How can our hearts be open like hers? To take time to be mindful of God acting in the world and to prayerfully reflect on them in our hearts.
On behalf of Fr. Norm and the Parish staff we wish each of you and your loved ones a very Happy and Blessed New Year!
The Rectory office will be closed Monday, January 2, in observance of the holiday.
