Reflections on the Sunday Scripture
November 6, 2016
Thirty-Second Sunday in Ordinary Time
Readings: 2 Mc 7:1-2, 9-14 2 Thessalonians 2:16-3:5; Luke 20: 27-38
Gospel Some Sadducees, those who deny that there is a resurrection, came forward and put this question to Jesus, saying, “Teacher, Moses wrote for us, If someone's brother dies leaving a wife but no child, his brother must take the wife and raise up descendants for his brother. Now there were seven brothers; the first married a woman but died childless. Then the second and the third married her, and likewise all the seven died childless. Finally the woman also died. Now at the resurrection whose wife will that woman be? For all seven had been married to her.” Jesus said to them, “The children of this age marry and remarry; but those who are deemed worthy to attain to the coming age and to the resurrection of the dead neither marry nor are given in marriage. They can no longer die, for they are like angels; and they are the children of God because they are the ones who will rise. That the dead will rise even Moses made known in the passage about the bush, when he called out ‘Lord,’ the God of Abraham, the God of Isaac, and the God of Jacob; and he is not God of the dead, but of the living, for to him all are alive.” 1. When did the heart of Jesus overcome your heart and life, and what happened? 2. What are your beliefs about the resurrection?
What does it mean to become like angels? 3. How do you see yourself as a child of God? 4. We are headed toward a life beyond death.
How do you see that life, for believing in the resurrection is surely a gift. Do you encourage others? Aren’t we all one body?

Because of your warm generosity, there will be lots of warm children in
central Florida this winter!
If you were unable to donate coats or jackets, we will still most happily accept
your cash (or check) donations for the next two weeks, so we can purchase coats
in sizes that are most needed.
Please make your checks payable to The Knights of Columbus, then
place them in an envelope marked Coats for Kids and put them
in the collection basket.
We will begin distributing the coats in the next few weeks.

BRING A FRIEND TO CHURCH WEEKEND
St. Mark the Evangelist Parish will have a “Bring a Friend to Church”
weekend on November 26-27, with a special reception in the Parish Hall.
We all probably know some non-practicing Catholics in
our neighborhood or family who may have strayed away from regular church attendance. However, as we heard in the recent Gospel of the prodigal son, Our Father will celebrate upon the prodigal son’s return. We also heard
in the Gospel that “The first shall be last and the last shall be first!” Wouldn’t we all like to join in this
celebration of the prodigal son(s) and daughter(s)?
We hope that you will “Bring a Friend to Church” during the weekend of November 26-27. Please
invite someone to come to church and then fill out the form below and leave it at the Parish Office so that we
can estimate the number of people we can expect at the reception in the Parish Hall.

BEGINNING THANKSGIVING DAY (not before!)
The 2017 ST. MARK CALENDAR
will be available for pickup
in the Narthex.
O Lord, Our Just and Loving Father, we thank you for the precious gift
of Human Life that is greatly threatened by the Culture of Death.
Aware of the dangers we are now facing, we ask that You guide us in electing the
leaders Our nation truly needs:
Leaders with the wisdom to discern Your providential plan.
Leaders who understand the weakness of the human condition.
Leaders who counsel our citizens to respect the rule of law.
Leaders with the fortitude to face their opponents with grace.
Leaders with knowledge of our Constitution and of natural rights.
Leaders whose piety makes them aware of their own limitations.
And leaders whose reverential fear informs their moral judgment.
We pray that the inalienable rights to life, liberty, and the pursuit
of happiness, promised by our founders, may be preserved, protected, and
defended for all, especially the most vulnerable
members of our society. Almighty and Merciful God,
sustain us in our struggle to live in peace as one nation under God. Amen.

arrangements of old and new songs, covering many musical styles and moods.

Some Thoughts about after the Election…
Regardless of who wins the Election...
Jesus Christ will still be King...
The Cross, not the Government, will still be our Salvation...
Our retirement will still not match our treasure in Heaven...
Our responsibilities as Christians will not have changed one iota...
Our children and grandchildren will still be more concerned with how much time we spend with them than
with who is president...
“It is better to trust in the Lord than to put confidence in princes.” PS 118: 8-9
