Reflections on the Sunday Scripture

November 13, 2016

33rd Sunday in Ordinary Time

Readings: Malachi 3:19-20

2 Thessalonians 3:7-12 Luke 21:5-19

Gospel

While some people were speaking about how the temple was adorned with costly stones and votive offerings, Jesus said, "All that you see here--the days will come when there will not be left a stone upon another stone that will not be thrown down." Then they asked him, "Teacher, when will this happen? And what sign will there be when all these things are about to happen?" He answered, "See that you not be deceived, for many will come in my name, saying, 'I am he,’ and 'The time has come.’ Do not follow them! When you hear of wars and insurrections, do not be terrified; for such things must happen first, but it will not immediately be the end." Then he said to them, "Nation will rise against nation, and kingdom against kingdom. There will be powerful earthquakes, famines, and plagues from place to place; and awesome sights and mighty signs will come from the sky.

"Before all this happens, however, they will seize and persecute you, they will hand you over to the synagogues and to prisons, and they will have you led before kings and governors because of my name. It will lead to your giving testimony. Remember, you are not to prepare your defense beforehand, for I myself shall give you a wisdom in speaking that all your adversaries will be powerless to resist or refute. You will even be handed over by parents, brothers, relatives, and friends, and they will put some of you to death. You will be hated by all because of my name, but not a hair on your head will be destroyed. By your perseverance you will secure your lives."

1. With all the hardships and turmoil in the world today that we all experience, how do you see God’s love in your heart and life? Is HE present in the world? Is HE present in your life and those around you? If not, what are you doing to change that?

2. When you were down and hurting, how did you recover? What did you do and what did others do?

3. If tomorrow was the end of the world what would you do today?

4. If you had to defend your faith and beliefs, what would you say about God? Jesus? The Holy Spirit? The Church? About your life as a disciple of Christ?

Bring a Friend to Church Weekend

St. Mark’s is holding a “Bring a Friend to Church Weekend”

on November 26-27. There will be a special reception in the Parish Hall.

We probably know some non-practicing Catholics in our neighborhood or family. They may have strayed away from regular church attendance.

However, we heard in the recent Gospel of the prodigal son, that Our Father will celebrate upon the prodigal son’s return.

We also heard in the Gospel that “The first shall be last and the last shall be first!” Wouldn’t we all like to join in this celebration of the prodigal son(s) and daughter(s)?

We hope that you will “Bring a Friend to Church” during the weekend of November 26 and 27. Please invite someone to come to church and then fill out the form below and leave at the Parish Office

so that we can estimate the number of people we can expect at our reception in the Parish Hall.

called “Landings.” The program welcomes home and assists those returning

Catholics who have drifted away from the Church for one reason or another.

We are looking for parishioners who would be willing to be a part of this

important program to help our Catholic brethren return to our welcoming

Church. The program needs current parishioners who would like to meet with

returning Catholics in order to share their faith and feelings. If you would

like to help these returning Catholics, please call the church office

at 347-9317 and ask for Deacon John Rumplasch.

A Suggestion ~

A Dream ~ A Vision

The members of our church know they can always learn to be more like Christ. They love God. They love Jesus and they love the Holy Spirit.

They love worshipping God. They want all their thoughts and actions to obey and please God.

When all our thoughts and actions completely embrace, include, and spring from God’s love,

God uses us to bring others to Christ.

It would be wonderful, if ten years from now, in 2027, when folks mention our church they say,

“That’s where God’s love flourishes.” It would also be wonderful if they called us “The Christians

who always love God, in all matters.”

If we focus on learning-living-teaching about God’s love for the next ten years, maybe they would.

And that would be wonderful for our church and life would truly be more abundant for everyone.

Ten-year projects are great, and accomplish a lot for two or three years, then they need to be revitalized,

invigorated, and rejuvenated. If we dedicate all of our church to such a ten-year project, we will need ten

years of quarterly “lesson-plans about God’s love”. The success of the project will also require many

strategic, short-term programs, goals, and objectives to keep all of our church moving in the desired direction.

The opportunities are many and endless. New accomplishments will build upon prior

accomplishments. Love never fails.
