St Ivo School
iPad Bulletin
Issue 5 Week beginning: 30th September
1. Briefing points
1.2 iOS7 (IMPORTANT ***)
Further to last week’s message about a security vulnerability, Apple have now released version 7.0.2 of iOs 7. If you have iOs 7 then please update as soon as possible – should take no more than 15 minutes.
TUTORIALS TO SUPPORT iOS7
How to create folders in iOS7 – as you get more and more apps it helps to organise your apps into folders – for example – Personal Apps; Subject Specific Apps; Productivity Apps etc.. This tutorial video shows you how.. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-BOVG383dD4#t=14
Tabbed Browsing in iOS7 (i.e. use of Safari and multiple windows) – a useful tutorial video here http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sTcXRWDhCpE
1.3 Styluses
With its touch interactivity and with various apps enabling you
to add annotation / labels it is possible to use a stylus rather
than your finger to get more controlled / neater labels etc..
There are different qualities of these. The rubber tips can wear
out but this depends on how heavily used. The quality is
obviously reflected in the price but there are various stockists
and Amazon for example has cheap options, including
multibuys if it is something a department wishes to try out /
experiment with.
2. Apps Focus
The aim of this section is just to highlight a small number of Apps each week which may be
of interest to you. At the end of the section I will highlight any new Subject-specific Apps I
have come across.
REMEMBER - If you find any particular useful Apps - please email me the name and a sentence or two to
explain how it has been useful so I can include it in the bulletin to share with others. Sometimes an app
which seems subject specific can be utilised well in other areas as well!
Stage (Free) – mobile IWB and Document Camera (teaching &
demonstration tool)
https://itunes.apple.com/app/stage-interactive-whiteboard/id584574701?mt=8
Stage is a simple but effective app for making lessons
interactive, collaborative and engaging and is a great way of
making the most of 1 iPad in the classroom to benefit the whole
class. This is a great tool with potential for use in ALL subject
areas! It enables you to interact directly with students work
through whole school presentations becoming a mobile document
camera with the functions of an interactive whiteboard. It enables
you to sketch over photographs (e.g. of students work or other
photographs from your camera roll) or even over live video so
that you are interacting in real time whilst sharing this with
students via Airplay for whole class presentation. The app can be
used as a mobile whiteboard / blackboard (colour easily changed)
enabling staff to sketch / takes notes straight onto the iPad
(reflected through AirServer to the board). Multiple pen colours /
widths and even a label function are easily accessed alongside an
eraser. (The app is free however the ability to record video
requires in an in-app purchase – but it is only £1.49)
There are other more powerful apps which allow you to do similar things to Stage whilst providing an even greater
functionality (e.g. Explain Everything which will be featured in future bulletins) however Stage is a great starting
point, particularly for those who are less confident with the iPad as it has a very user friendly interface with a set of
simple tools which can be used quickly and effectively and it is a great way of adding interactivity to a lesson whilst
helping to engage all students.
Examples of potential use:
- Real-time recording of science experiments ‘air-playing’ to the board so all students have clear view
– whilst recording experiment for later repeat – enabling pause / annotation etc.
- Create labels (which can be stored for later) to add to documents / images shown for review
- Show photos / images / documents stored on the iPad which can be annotated in stage to highlight key
points
- Sketch / takes notes and add labels to live video
- AFL – ‘real-time’ sharing of student work – take picture or video and wirelessly project to the board
– annotations can be added to the work
- Create videos of demonstrations which can be recorded prior to the lesson or create simple
screencasts which can be then shared with students electronically – e.g. via projects or email for
use in revision or homework activities.
If you want to get more of an idea of how this works – see this tutorial video
