Make a Call
In the past month I have become aware of several parishioners who were disappointed because either
they themselves, or their loved one, did not receive a visit from one of the priests of the parish. Unfortunately,
in every case, the priest was not notified that someone needed to be visited. Try as we might, in a place the
size of St. Eugene Parish, it is hard to remember who is sick and it is impossible to know who is in the hospi-
tal, unless we are notified.
Some people tell the nurse that they want a visit from one of the priests of the parish. Unfortunately,
the message usually does not get conveyed. Nurses are busy and it is not their responsibility to inform parish-
es. So, in the future, if you have a loved one in the hospital in need of a visit, please make sure you call the
rectory. It is frustrating when people tell me that a loved one has been in the hospital and they have not been
visited. Yet, the person wanting a visit, or the loved one of the person, never inform the rectory that they are
in the hospital.
Every once in a while a parishioner will tell me that another parishioner complained to them about not
receiving a visit from one of the priests of the parish. This baffles me. The person wanting a visit will not reach
out to myself, Fr. Greg, or Fr. Phil but, they will call another parishioner to complain. This is not helpful. It is
not realistic to expect that priests magically know who is sick or in need of a visit. Please, let us keep the lines
of communication open. If you want a visit, need to be anointed, or want to go to confession, you have to
share that information by calling the rectory.
Yours in Christ,

A SIGNIFICANT DAY “And suddenly there came from the sky a noise like a strong driving wind, and it filled the entire house in which they were” (Acts 2:2). The Holy Spirit’s arrival on that first Pentecost was signaled by a rush of wind. We all know what it’s like when our windows are open just as a summer storm rises up. Curtains fly, papers become airborne, house plants shudder, dust is scattered. A rush of wind disrupts the orderliness of our home. The coming of the Holy Spirit, as celebrated each year at Pentecost, can also disrupt ways that have become comfortable and orderly. The Church always needs Pentecost. We need the breath of God’s Spirit to blow away any complacency or malaise that has settled into our faith. Jesus breathes on his disciples and they receive the Holy Spirit. With that reception comes the power to share the Good News of salvation. Today, this is no less true for us. opyright © J. S. Paluch Co.

“We must take sides. Neutrality helps the oppressor, never the victim. Silence encourages the tormentors, not the tormented. Wherever anyone is persecuted for their race or political
views, (or religion) that place must become the center of the universe.”
Pope Francis urges us to make the Middle East
the center of the universe at this time. He asks us to keep the spotlight on that area
of the world as the horrific persecution of Christians continues.

IN OBSERVANCE OF MEMORIAL DAY
Prayer on Memorial Day Lord Jesus Christ, today we honor
the memory of those men and women
who gave their all in the cause of free-
dom. They worked, fought and died for
the heritage of freedom, brotherhood,
and honor that they have passed on to us.
Help us to recall that you gave up your life for
the true freedom of all human beings. Teach us the
meaning of peace and the real battle that must
take place in ourselves before it
will be won in families and na-
tions. Make us keep your memory
in our celebration of communion
and pray for the peace and free-
dom of the whole world.
Let freedom ring Our fathers’ God to Thee
Author of liberty
To Thee we sing
Long may our land be bright
With freedom’s holy light
Protect us by Thy might
Great God, our King!

Prayer with Scripture We invite you to an encounter of prayer where you can stop from the hurry of the moment and listen to God through God’s Word, in silence, meditation, ad-oration and contemplation. In this short but intense time, we listen to a talk that introduces us into the understanding of the Word of God, which later, we reflect on and meditate in an attitude of faith, discov-ering what God is trying to reveal to us. The prayer is accompanied by the exposition of the Blessed Sacrament with songs to help the faithful enter more into prayer.

“DO NOT BE SILENT” “Silence in the face of evil is itself evil. God will not hold us guiltless.”
Dietrich Bonfoeffer Today, religious ethnic minorities including Christians are being imprisoned, beheaded, and
crucified by radical groups in Asia, Africa, and the Middle East. We Christians, in that area known
as “people of the cross”, teach our children the gospel of love as Jesus has taught us. Adversely,
these radical groups are grooming children to provide the next generation of jihadist. The strategy
of the extremists includes the abduction and indoctrination of children as young as five years old to
“craft a cadre of fighters that will see violence as a way of life.” Our children and grandchildren will
be facing this wave of violence. In the United States, the future of our children and grandchildren is
already being affected. For example, through social media, bomb-making instruction are available
on the internet. The extremists are recruiting, brainwashing, training and encouraging our most
vulnerable young people to become suicide bombers and to commit other crimes in our own cities
and towns.
In the 1930s-40s the malevolent ideology of the Nazi regime gradually spread throughout
Europe resulting in the death of millions of people. The desire for power, the international
community’s slow reaction against the iniquities, and the silence and complicity of the people
helped to feed the growth of this brutal era in history. History is now repeating itself.
As this evil slowly infiltrates our society we must “not be silent and inactive”. We can
become involved by praying for a conversion of these militants especially by using the power of the
rosary Second, publicize the orange ribbon movement at every opportunity. Orange represents the
color of the jumpsuits worn by our modern day martyrs. Wear orange ribbons, orange articles of
clothing, put an orange ribbon in your window, etc., to show support for ur Christian brothers and
sisters. Together we can help protect our own country especially our children as we keep a
spotlight on the persecution taking place in the Middle East. (ribbons available at all the doors.)

TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION Marriage is ideally a parish event today, but in the first three centuries of the church’s history, it was a household celebration guided by civil law and pagan customs. Changes happened quickly after the Peace of Constantine in 312, and the fresh air after long persecution brought some creativity. The speech that the father of the groom’s family gave before dinner or the veiling or crowning of the bride (or even the spouse’s arrival at the honeymoon suite) attracted a prayer of blessing. With amazing rapidity, worship was propelled out of the intimate setting of house churches to large public gathering spaces, and some parts of the marriage ceremony began to migrate with the growing community to the new spaces. In Rome, the veiling of the bride with the customary daily headgear of a married woman became the central liturgical act, accompanied by a biblical prayer for her integrity and fruitfulness. There were no vows as such (just as there are no vows to this day in the Orthodox marriage rite). In the liturgy, after hearing John’s Gospel account of the wedding at Cana, the bride was veiled and blessed, and the priest gave the kiss of peace to the husband, who then gave it to his bride. The liturgy of Rome traveled far, and everywhere it went, marriage became a church celebration. —Rev. James Field, Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co.
ILLINOIS KIDS NEED YOUR SUPPORT As a member of the Illinois Kids Campaign, the Catholic Conference of Illinois believes that no investment is more critical to our kids’ future than a quality education, and we hope you will add your voice by sharing that message. Please join the thousands of parents and families across Illinois who are calling on Springfield to Invest in Kids. The Illinois Kids Campaign is a statewide coalition urging lawmakers to take meaningful steps toward providing all children with the best education possible through important poli-cies such as:
• Teacher tax credits for out-of-pocket classroom supplies • Scholarships for students to attend K-12 nonpublic schools or public schools out of district • Capital funding for facilities and infrastructure improvements • Increased tax credits to parents for qualified education expenses at public and nonpublic schools
WHAT CAN YOU DO? 1. Contact your legislator by visiting the Campaign website www.illinoiskidscampaign.org 2. Then find us on Twitter and Facebook and join the conversation! 3. Spread the word. Tell your fellow parents and parishioners, neighbors, colleagues and friends about this important work and ask them to contact their legislators, too.

We ask all of our parishioners, if you have a loved one serving in the military,
to please contact the rectory office to give us the name of the soldier, so the
whole parish can pray for your loved one. A book in the church vestibule is
available for inscribing the names of all military personnel. This book will be part of the offertory
procession from now until the war is over.
A PRAYER LORD, HOLD OUR TROOPS IN YOUR LOVING HANDS. PROTECT THEM AS THEY PROTECT US. BLESS THEM AND THEIR FAMILIES FOR THE SELFLESS ACTS THEY PERFORM FOR US IN OUR TIME OF NEED. WE ASK THIS IN THE NAME OF JESUS OUR LORD AND SAVIOR. AMEN
We pray for our loved ones
who are serving in any branch of the Armed Forces during this time of conflict.
OUR MISSION STATEMENT
Our mission as Catholics united in faith at St. Eugene Parish is to help bring God to people and people to
God. Through evangelization, education and being of service to each other, we strive to make our parish
community a holistic community in body, mind and spirit. It is our goal to develop, support, encourage and
empower one another in our parish ministries, so that each person can reach their human and Christian po-
tential. We are enthused about the future of St. Eugene and the whole Catholic Church and we pledge our
participation in that future. We seek dialogue and open communication with all parishioners in fulfilling the
needs of our parish. While recognizing the cultural diversities in our community, we will strive to bring all peo-
ple together in Christ under a common bond of faith, hope and love.
