A FEW THOUGHTS FROM YOUR NEW PASTOR… As I was thinking this past week about what I might say as a way of introduction to you who are my new St. Eugene parish family, I couldn’t help but focus on how quickly things can change in our lives. Why, just a couple of weeks ago, Fr. George Koeune, who had been your pastor for twelve years, said his final farewells to all of you and you, as well, to him. I, too, am just returning from a phenomenal sabbatical experi-ence and am coming to you with a renewed passion and engery for parish ministry. In just a matter of days the things each of us has been familiar with have been changed and can never be the same again. Hopefully, however, we can look back with gratitude at what we had or experienced and at the same time look forward with eager anticipation to the good things that might be down the road for us. The word we use for this experi-ence that we encounter many times throughout our lives is: TRANSITION. Most of us (including myself) don’t like CHANGE in our lives especially when we’ve gotten used to doing things in certain ways or knowing someone like our priests, pastors and fellow-workers for so long. Yet, we all know CHANGE is inevitable. That being said, I want you to know how much I am looking forward to working and walking with you on this journey we call LIFE. I can’t think of a better time than now for our new beginning together. The reason I say this is because, as you well know, our church here in Chicago and really throughout our entire country is going through some very challenging times with regard to planning for our future. Planning is the key word here and planning is good because it gives us all a chance to be in on the process. Our faith and our Univer-sal Church is a gift to us from God. How we as a local church put our faith into action is our gift to God and others. Hopefully, you are very much aware by now that the Archdiocese of Chicago is very much engaged in the effort, the call and the mission that has been named: Renew My Church. This is why I think these will be exciting and re-energizing days ahead of us. In our efforts to re-discover the joy of the Gospel taught by Jesus Christ and spread by the early apostles of Jesus, we will be on a mission together to make disciples of one another, build a stronger faith community and in the process, hopefully, inspire witness to others by the exam-ples of our lives. Isn’t this what we as a Church should be all about? I certainly hope you would agree that it is. There is so much more I would like to say about Renew My Church, but we first need to get to know one another. That takes some time. Hopefully, and God willing, we’ll have many years together to at least get to know one another in ways that will better help us all grow in our relationships with each other and with Je-sus Christ. Imagine what our church community would look like if we were truly on fire in our faith -- especially to our younger community members who are definitely the future of our Church? Please know that I am grateful to be here at St. Eugene’s and to serve as your next pastor and that I look forward to ministering here alongside my brother priests and fellow staff in our school, Religious Ed. and parish As I begin to learn the ropes here and try to find my way around, please be patient and understanding and I promise the same to all of you.

SECOND COLLECTION FOR PETER’S PENCE

O LORD, BE MY HELP Today we encounter readings that draw us into the mystery of suffering and death. In the past few years we have witnessed the devastation of life and property through earthquakes and hurricanes. So many lifted their lament to God, simply asking, “Why?” This is an honest expression of anger toward a God who we believe is the giver of life. When we lose a loved one, we can wonder why the presence of Christ is not enough to make that person rise, even from death, as did the little girl in today’s Gospel passage. Again we raise our voices and ask, “Why?” At moments such as these, let us make the prayer of the psalmist our own: “Hear, O L , and have pity on me; O L , be my helper.” Let us pray that our mourning will one day be turned into dancing. WE WELCOME YOU TO PLEASE STOP BY THE RECTORY OFFICE DURING

Prayer with Scripture

We invite you to an encounter of prayer where you can stop from the hurry of the moment and listen to God through God’s Word, in silence, meditation, ad-oration and contemplation. In this short but intense time, we listen to a talk that introduces us into the understanding of the Word of God, which later, we reflect on and meditate in an attitude of faith, discov-ering what God is trying to reveal to us. The prayer is accompanied by the exposition of the Blessed Sacrament with songs to help the faithful enter more into prayer.

BLESSING OF EXPECTANT MOTHERS Next Sunday, and on the second Sunday of each month, St. Eugene Parish offers a blessing for expectant mothers, fathers and their unborn children following the 9:30 a.m. Mass. The blessing is given to strengthen mothers and fathers during the time of waiting, and to pray for the health and safe delivery of their child. This blessing may be received monthly throughout the pregnancy.

SCHEDULING THE USE OF PARISH FACILITIES AUGUST 2018 THRU JUNE 30, 2019 The calendar year for the use of parish facilities by parish ministries is from August 1st through June 30th. During the month of July no events are scheduled. This allows time for the extensive summer cleaning and repairs in the buildings. When summer maintenance projects require August scheduling, part or all of August may also be unavailable for use by parish and other organizations. The calendar committee will meet after July 1, 2018 to approve the scheduling of events for the months through June 2019. All organiza-tions requesting space must submit the official scheduling forms (available in the rectory). Forms must be completed in full and returned to the rectory no later than June 30, 2018 No organization should assume that the space and meeting times available in past years will continue to be available during the 2018-19 school year. All groups and parish organizations are, therefore, reminded to await the confirmation of available space for dates sub-mitted before finalizing plans for events.

The cost of freedom Every year thousands of people visit

Independence Hall in Philadelphia which houses the Liberty Bell. The inscription on the bell comes from Leviticus in the Old Testament, “Proclaim liberty throughout all the land unto all the inhabitants thereof.”

Stirring words. But words weren’t enough in 1776, and they aren’t enough now. Talk is cheap. Freedom isn’t.

Freedom means defending the principles we believe in when doing so can be unpopular or costly. Freedom means giving of our time, effort and money to support causes and candidates that stand for what we know is right. Freedom means putting the needs of our country above business, union or political party.

Liberty is worth only what people are willing to pay for it. What will it cost you?

TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION As Independence Day draws near, we think of the men and women of the military who serve with courage and competence, some far from home. How does the Church accompany them? In 1939, Pope Pius XII created an independent jurisdiction of the Catholic Church called the “Military Vicariate.” In 1985 Pope John Paul II created the “Archdiocese for Military Services, USA.” Spanning the globe and serving nearly one and a half million Roman Catholics, more than one thousand priests minister in hospitals, on military bases of all the armed forces, on ships at sea, and on the battlefield. The AMS does not ordain priests, but accepts priests on loan from religious orders and dioceses. In 1824 a Jesuit priest named Adam Marshall enlisted in the Navy and died at sea in 1825. He was assigned as a “schoolmaster,” but he sought out and ministered to Catholic sailors. Twenty years later, President Polk was worried that the war with Mexico was seen as anti-Catholic, so he recruited two Jesuit priests to serve in the army as chaplains. At the time of the Civil War, only about ten percent of Americans were Catholic. Military policies forced Catholic soldiers to attend Protestant services. The Church protested this rule, and many priests volunteered to become chaplains. Their witness and the courage of the “Nuns of the Battlefield” (several orders of sisters who assisted Civil War victims) helped temper prejudice against Catholics and pave the way for the life and ministry of this vigorous and unique archdiocese. —Rev. James Field, Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co.

DRESS APPROPRIATELY FOR MASS As warm weather is here, we would like to remind everyone that Sunday Mass is the most im-portant and solemn event of the week. It is not an “informal occasion.” As a consequence, the appro-priate attire for Mass should be characterized by modesty, dignity, and elegance. Clothing suitable for a picnic, or for the beach, can indicate a lack of respect for the Eucharistic Sacrifice.

FRIENDLY VISTORS NEEDED Be a friend to a lonely senior.

The Seniors Assistance Center is looking for outgoing, caring and compassionate volunteers to visit with a senior citizen in the communities of Norridge, Harwood Heights and unincorporated Norwood Park Township. This service provides companionship to the older adults in our community who are lonely, isolated, homebound, or in need of assistance to leave their homes. One of the most important aspects of the program is the real friendship that can develop between a senior and a friendly visitor. Some simple and fun things to do when visiting with your senior - having coffee/tea and conversation; reading aloud; playing a favorite game; sharing memories; doing crafts together; planning occasional outings such as short walks or shopping when possible. For further information about how you can become a friend to a senior, call Anne or Carole at: 708/456-7979.

OUR MISSION STATEMENT

Our mission as Catholics united in faith at St. Eugene Parish is to help bring God to people and people to God. Through evangelization, education and being of service to each other, we strive to make our parish community a holistic community in body, mind and spirit. It is our goal to develop, support, encourage and empower one another in our parish ministries, so that each person can reach their human and Christian po-tential. We are enthused about the future of St. Eugene and the whole Catholic Church and we pledge our participation in that future. We seek dialogue and open communication with all parishioners in fulfilling the needs of our parish. While recognizing the cultural diversities in our community, we will strive to bring all people together in Christ under a common bond of faith, hope and love.
