Solfege Scale

Syllables that are used to represent notes on the scale.

Use hand signs for every note

Ranges from do to do

Fixed-Do System

Do will always be the note C on the scale

Moveable-Do

Do will always be the first note of the Major Scale

Pronunciation of Do

Do is the first syllable for the scale

Pronounced like “Doe” or “Dough”

Hand Sign For Do

A fist that is held out straight

Held at eye level

Pronunciation of Re

Sounds like how a person would say “Ray” as in a ray of sunlight

Hand Sign For Re

Palm down facing the floor

Position flat hand on an angle

Pronunciation of Mi

Sounds like “Me”

Hand Sign For Mi

Flat hand with palm facing the ground

Pronunciation of Fa

The “a” is a longer “ah” sound.

Pronounced about the same as it looks

Hand Sign For Fa

Make a “thumbs-down” sign with your hand

Pronunciation of Sol

Pronounced as it sounds but the “L” is more silent

Sounds like “So”

Hand Sign For Sol

Flat hand with open palm

point open palm outward

Pronunciation of La

The “a” has a long sound to it

Like “la-la-la” in a song

Hand Sign For La

Make a cup with your hand

It will look like the letter “C”

Point the open part of your “C” towards the ground

Pronunciation of Ti

• Will Sound like “tea”

• as in the tea we drink

Hand Sign for Ti

• Make a fist

• Point index finger up

• Loosen grip in fist, but keep finger pointed up

End On Do

The scale goes from Do to Do

Hand signs are the same and pronunciations are the same.
