Working for brand specialists Cake Group, thisproject involved creating a gigantic pound coinreplica. This huge coin, measuring 7.5m in diameterand weighing 3 tonnes, was to symbolise the £50million that the BIG Lottery Fund intends to awardthrough a nationwide competition public vote.Indeed, the giant replica was reported to be largeenough to hold 50 million normal-sized pound coins.
The project utilised a variety of our workshop facilitiesincluding steelwork, computer modelling and both3 and 5 axis CNC machining, while the intricate handsculpting of our skilled interpretation teamcomplemented this. The whole job was completedwithin just two and a half weeks.

To construct the coin, a steel frame was clad withplywood while a real coin was scanned in order tocreate a computerised model of the two surfacesand the edge detailing. We were then able to recreatethe Queen’s head and crest from polyurethane foamusing our 5 axis CNC facility. The detail lost by scalingup the coin 345 times was then deftly added by ourinterpretation team who accurately carved andshaped the final detail by hand.
The letters appearing on the coin faces were createdusing illustrator software and were cut from MDFusing our 3 axis CNC facility whilst fibreglass wasused to create the 400 dots required to encircle theperimeter of each face. All the elements were thenbrought together and assembled in our workshopswhere they were covered with textured paint beforebeing finished with 3 coats of gold paint to achievethe correct shade and patina.
The coin was split into two pieces for transportationalong with the base, plus weights and the ‘slot’. Thecompleted structure was then erected just south ofTower Bridge, in Potters’ Fields Park.
